UPDATE (11 a.m. Eastern): R. Kelly has pleaded not guilty on all 10 counts of aggravated sexual abuse against him. His attorney Steve Greenberg entered the plea for the R&B singer in a Chicago courtroom.EARLIER STORY:R. Kelly, one of the most successful R&B acts of all time, was still in jail Sunday afternoon after he failed to immediately produce the 0,000 in cash required to make bail.A judge in Chicago set Kelly's total bond at million on Saturday, a day after he was indicted on 10 counts of aggravated sexual abuse against four victims, three of whom would have been underage at the time of the alleged crimes, according to prosecutors.Kelly's bond was set at 0,000 for each of the alleged victims in the case. To leave police custody, he's required to pay 10 percent of the total, or 0,000.Steve Greenberg, Kelly's attorney, told reporters after Saturday's bail hearing that he was "very happy" with the bond and that it seemed "fair and reasonable given the allegations."But Greenberg said his client "really doesn't have any money at this point" due to "mismanagement," "hangers-on" and "bad deals."He added Kelly would ultimately be able to come up with the required 0,000."He's trying to get it together," Greenberg said. "He doesn't have it sitting in the bank."Illinois does not have bail bondsmen, Greenberg pointed out.Singer owes thousands in unpaid child supportBut Kelly's money problems don't stop with his bail.According to court documents, Kelly owed more than 9,000 in unpaid child support to his ex-wife as of Feb. 6.The court ordered Kelly to make a monthly payment of ,833 on January 8, 2009, but Kelly failed to show up to that hearing, per court documents. To avoid being held in contempt of court, a judge ordered he pay 1,663 by March 6.Greenberg said his client "does not have to pay the child support before getting out.""The state is trying to make him do that, or they were," Greenberg said, "but the judge said no."Singer also faced eviction from his studioKelly also risked eviction at his Chicago studio last month because he owes more than 6,000 in unpaid rent.Court documents show a judge signed an eviction order in January. The documents show Robert Kelly needed to move out on or before January 21, but Kelly was still at the studio minutes before he turned himself in to police on Friday night. The eviction process began in July 2018 when the landlord, Midwest Commercial Funding LLC, said Kelly defaulted on the lease by initially failing to pay more than ,000 in rent. The back rent continued to pile up, and the judge finally signed off on an eviction. In January a judge ordered the second floor of Kelly's studio -- which was being used as a bedroom -- to be closed because it posed a fire hazard. The judge also limited Kelly's use of the building to between the hours of 9 a.m. and 9 p.m., a decision Greenberg slammed in a statement on his Twitter page, in which he compared Kelly to Ludwig van Beethoven, Sigmund Freud and Winston Churchill, whom he said worked and wrote at night. The area was only zoned commercial, and not residential. 3138

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Amid the bright orchids of the U.S. Botanic Garden sits a 200-year history of protecting America’s most fragile plants.“We're a living repository for rare and endangered plants,” said Saharah Moon Chapotin, director of the garden. The U.S. Botanic Garden is the oldest one in the country, an idea envisioned by George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. It’s about to celebrate its 200th year. About 60,000 plants, lying within several acres in the heart of Washington, D.C.Conservation at the garden is always in season.“Many of our plants are rare and endangered and we are providing a home for them,” Chapotin said. Here in the U.S. there are 1,300 species that are considered threatened or endangered. Nearly 20 percent of those are plants adding up to hundreds of flora on the brink. Some already fell off the cliff, like Hawaii’s “Cabbage on a Stick.” Because of overdevelopment, the insect that pollinated it disappeared and in 2014, the plant went extinct in the wild, too. There are others endangered, too, like a cactus from Arizona and bushes which are native to Florida. Endangered plants don’t always get the kind of attention endangered animals do.“Often people do think about animals they have faces and they're sort of cute,” USBG deputy director Susan Pell. “So, we kind of think people generally can sort of sympathize with them a little bit more, than maybe with a plant that they're not familiar with.”At the garden, they emphasize how much plants are tied to the habitat of endangered animals, at risk from invasive species, development and climate change.“They're really interconnected and so I think plants are a fundamental part of conserving environment and conserving habitats,” Chapotin said. “And if you just focus on conserving the animals you're leaving out a huge part of the equation in terms of the plants.”That all adds up to a continuing mission of saving plants there in the hopes of one day taking those that are now extinct outside the walls and reintroducing them back to Mother Nature. 2049

Vitamin E acetate, in combination with THC, may be to blame for a national outbreak of e-cigarette-related lung injuries that's linked to dozens of deaths, according to US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials.Dr. Anne Schuchat, the principal deputy director of the CDC, said she would characterize it as a breakthrough in the agency's investigation, although more tests are necessary."These new findings are significant," Schuchat said during a press briefing on Friday. "We have a strong culprit."There is still more work to do and the CDC said it is continuing to test for a wide range of chemicals."This does not rule out other possible ingredients," Schuchat said. "There may be more than one cause."The CDC says its tests found vitamin E acetate in samples taken from 29 patients who were sick with vaping-related illness in 10 states. THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, the primary psychoactive component of the cannabis plant, or its metabolites were detected in 23 of 28 patients.During the press briefing, CDC's Dr. James Pirkle described vitamin E acetate as "enormously sticky" when it goes into the lungs, and it "does hang around." Pirkle said it wouldn't be unusual for THC to be absent from some of the samples because it leaves the lungs faster. He added finding THC in 82% of the samples from 28 patients was "noteworthy."In September, New York health officials linked cases of severe lung illness to vitamin E acetate in cannabis-containing vaping products. At the time, investigators said it was "a key focus" of the state's investigation into the illnesses. An investigation into the link between vaping and severe lung illnesses has yielded the discovery of extremely high levels of the chemical vitamin E acetate in nearly all cannabis-containing vaping products that were analyzed, New York health officials said Thursday.Until the investigation is complete, the CDC suggests people refrain from using all vaping products with THC, no matter where people buy them. The investigation has found that many of these products patients used were bought online or received through friends or family, rather than through vaping shops or at licensed THC dispensaries.Vitamin E is used in several products, such as lotions and in supplements, but the CDC said there is a "big difference" in putting vitamin E on the skin or swallowing it in pill and in inhaling the oily vitamin.Dr. Jennifer Layden, the chief medical officer and state epidemiologist with the Illinois Department of Public Health, said in the press briefing that in her state, they found the majority of cases of the people who were sick used THC, and that their materials came from "informal sources." In Illinois, she said, they had not had any cases associated with the state's medical marijuana program. So far, there have been 2,051 cases of vaping associated illnesses, reported in every state, except for Alaska, as of November 5. States have reported at least 40 deaths. 2979

U.S. officials say a medical screener at the Los Angeles International Airport has contracted the coronavirus. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security says it’s unclear if the person contracted the virus through their work as a medical screener or from community transmission. The agency said no travelers screened at LAX have tested positive for coronavirus. The person, who is a contractor for the Department of Homeland Security, is being quarantined at home and has mild symptoms. The patient last worked at the airport on Feb. 21 and began feeling cold-like symptoms on Feb. 29.
