The moderator from Tuesday’s presidential debate says there was an “honor system” for both campaigns when it came to completing COVID-19 tests for their staff ahead of the event.Fox News host Chris Wallace was speaking with his colleague Bill Hemmer Friday afternoon. They were discussing reports from earlier in the day that Trump’s family did not wear masks while seated during the debate in Cleveland.Wallace confirmed the report and said the Trump family were offered masks by the Cleveland Clinic staff and “rejected them.”He also said when President Donald Trump came into the hall Tuesday afternoon to look at the stage set-up, “members of the commission (on presidential debates) were not especially happy with the fact that the presidential party was not wearing a mask” during the walk-through.The statement released from the Cleveland Clinic Friday morning in regard to these developments stated, “Most importantly, everyone permitted inside the debate hall tested negative for COVID-19 prior to entry. Individuals traveling with both candidates, including the candidates themselves, had been tested and tested negative by their respective campaigns.”Wallace confirmed this, and said there would not have been enough time to have people from the campaigns tested on-site in Cleveland and receive results back before the debate needed to start.“They didn’t arrive until Tuesday afternoon, so for them to get tested, there wouldn’t have been enough time to have the test and have the debate later that night at 9 o’clock,” Wallace told Hemmer. “So yeah, there was an honor system when it came to the people who came into the hall from the two campaigns.”Wallace said people who were on the ground for multiple days in Cleveland, like himself and Hemmer who covered the debate for Fox News, were tested by the Cleveland Clinic. The Indianapolis 500 will be held without fans in attendance on Aug. 23 due to escalating concerns over the coronavirus pandemic in Marion County, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway announced Tuesday.It will mark the first time in the 109-year history of the Indy 500 that it will be run in front of empty stands at the 2.5-mile oval track.“As dedicated as we were to running the race this year with 25 percent attendance at our large outdoor facility, even with meaningful and careful precautions implemented by the city and state, the COVID-19 trends in Marion County and Indiana have worsened," a news release from IMS said.First held in 1911, the Indianapolis 500 is the largest single-day sporting event in the world with approximately 350,000 people annually packing the track's grandstands and infield to watch "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing." Running the race without fans prevents the seventh cancellation in Indy 500 history. The race was not held in 1917-18 during World War I, and from 1942-45 during World War II.In late March, IMS leaders rescheduled the race from May 24 to Aug. 23. Officials said on June 26 that Indy 500 attendance would be limited to no more than 50%.That number was further decreased on July 22 when plans were scaled back to host the race at 25% capacity. Face coverings would be required, and the Speedway released an 88-page health and safety plan that provided guidelines and protocols for how the race would be run in 2020.Even at 25% capacity, the race would have been the largest event held in the United States since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.IndyCar and IMS owner Roger Penske previously said he wouldn't run the race without fans, but the realities of the pandemic prevailed.“We need to be safe and smart about this,” Penske told the Associated Press. “Obviously we want full attendance, but we don’t want to jeopardize the health and safety of our fans and the community. We also don’t want to jeopardize the ability to hold a successful race.”In a news release, IMS said in the weeks since the June 26 announcement of 50% capacity, the number of COVID-19 cases in Marion County has tripled while the positivity rate has doubled."We said from the beginning of the pandemic we would put the health and safety of our community first, and while hosting spectators at limited capacity with our robust plan in place was appropriate in late June, it is not the right path forward based on the current environment," the release said.How fans will be impactedThe announcement of no fans on race day also means all on-track activity during the month of August, including practice and qualifications, will be closed to the public. The first practice will take place on Aug. 12.Fans who still have tickets to the 2020 Indy 500 will be credited for the 2021 race and retain their seniority and originally assigned seats.Additionally, as announced in July, the race will be broadcast live on TV in Central Indiana for the first time since 2016.State and city leaders react to Speedway's decisionIndiana Gov. The number of missing in Californian wildfires has soared to 631, as authorities added hundreds of names to the lists of the unaccounted for Thursday, in what has become the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in the state's history.Butte County Sheriff and Coroner Kory Honea said Thursday evening the death toll from the Camp Fire in northern California had grown to 63 people. Seven sets of remains were discovered Thursday, he said.At least two other people have been killed in another, separate wildfire in Southern California, putting the state's death toll at 65 since the two blazes began last week.On Friday hundreds of rescue personnel -- deputies, National Guard troops and coroners -- dressed in white overalls sifted through smoldering rubble and checked mangled cars, searching for human remains.Honea said the number of names on the missing list soared after investigators added information from callers who rang the dispatch center on the day the fire erupted and reported people who were missing in the chaos.Some of the names on the Butte County list appear more than once and it's not clear if any are duplicates. Officials have said it's hard to determine the number of missing, because some people may have evacuated and can't be reached with cell phone service unreliable due to the fire."There are a lot of people displaced and we're finding a lot of people don't know we are looking for them," Honea said.The fire turned the hard-hit town of Paradise into ash and debris and also devastated the nearby communities of Magalia and Concow. Honea said three sets of remains were found Thursday in Paradise, three in Magalia and one in Concow.Honea has invited relatives of the missing to visit the sheriff's office in Oroville so authorities can collect DNA samples from them. The DNA will be used to help identify fire victims, Honea said."This is a daunting task. You usually leave me dollar coins, but until this situation is resolved, I would like cash for my teeth. The NHL announced plans on Monday to resume play on August 1 with training camp slated to get underway next week.Currently, the NHL is in “Phase 2” of its reopening plan, which allows players to practice on a voluntary basis at team facilities. On July 13, full-team practices will be held at team practice facilities or arenas.On July 26, teams will travel to two hub cities in advance of a 24-team tournament slated to begin August 1. The CBC and Sportsnet both report that Toronto and Edmonton will serve as the two “hub cities” for resumption of play. The cities will likely be chosen as coronavirus cases are declining in Canada while increasing in the United States.Sixteen of the NHL’s 24 teams will participate in a qualifying round for this year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs. During the qualifying round, the top eight teams will play three games a piece for seeding purposes.Also on Monday, the league announced that 23 players tested positive for the coronavirus. The 23 players who tested positive are in addition to 12 players who previously tested positive in early June when the league began “Phase 1” of its reopening plan. All told, the league has had 35 players test positive.So far, the league has administered a total of 2,900 tests, with 396 having been tested so far.The league suspended play in mid-March in an effort to help stop the spread of the virus.
