SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 29-year-old patron of seafood restaurant in Mira Mesa is grateful for his wallet Friday evening as it stopped a bullet fired from a passing vehicle.The shooting happened about 9:10 p.m. at the Crab Hut restaurant, 8280 Mira Mesa Blvd., according to Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.Several rounds were fired and one of the bullets struck the man in the buttocks area, but his wallet stopped the bullet and he was not injured, Heims said.A description of the suspects or suspect vehicle was not immediately available. 567

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Little Kurt looks like any other baby horse as he frolics playfully in his pen. But the 2-month-old, dun-colored colt is actually a clone. He was created by fusing cells taken from an endangered Przewalski’s horse at the San Diego Zoo in 1980. The cells were infused with an egg from a domestic horse that gave birth to Kurt two months ago. The baby boy was named for Kurt Benirschke, a founder of the San Diego Zoo's Frozen Zoo, where thousands of cell cultures are stored. Scientists hope Kurt will help restore the Przewalski’s population, which numbers only about 2,000. 599

SAN DIEGO (AP and KGTV) -- Washing Senators are remembering John McCain's momentous vote against a Republican effort to repeal the Obama-era health law. Of those remembering McCain is Sen Susan Collins, who told CNN's "State of the Union" that she and GOP colleague Lisa Murkowski of Alaska — both repeal opponents — spoke to McCain before the July 2017 vote because they knew he was struggling with the decision.Collins says he pointed to them and simply said, "You two are right!"Vice President Mike Pence was waiting to speak with McCain next, Collins says, but she knew McCain's "no" decision would stick. Collins said, "Once John McCain made up his mind about something, there was no shaking him."McCain would later famously hold up his hand and vote no, ending the measure. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A convicted sex offender will be released from a state hospital and placed at a sheriff's facility in Jacumba Hot Springs, where he will continue treatment in a conditional release program, a San Diego judge ruled Monday. Alan Earl James, 56, was convicted in 1981 and 1986 of numerous sex-related felonies involving several minor victims -- who included younger family members -- and sentenced to 28 years in state prison. James, who is classified as a ``sexually violent predator,'' was committed to Coalinga State Hospital, where he was undergoing treatment ``for an indeterminate term'' until he petitioned for a monitored conditional release last summer, prosecutors said. By April 25, James will be placed at 45612 Old Highway 80 in Jacumba Hot Springs. San Diego County Superior Court Judge Albert Harutunian -- who recommended James' integration into the conditional release program last fall based upon the evaluation of psychiatric experts -- ruled that the Jacumba Hot Springs facility meets the criteria for placement. James' impending release was met with opposition last week during another hearing in Harutunian's courtroom, which drew a crowd that included his former victims, county Supervisor Dianne Jacob and members of the community. Harutunian told attendees that he understood their opposition to James' release, but said citizens would be better suited directing their concerns towards the legislature, which determines sentencing guidelines and penalties for offenders. However, I still have family here, family that are children, as well as adults, and will all be impacted by this. I just fear that he will hurt another child and I don't want that to ever happen again.''
