MIANYANG, Sichuan, 23 (Xinhua) -- Premier Wen Jiabao continued his second trip around the quake disaster zone on Friday, visiting surviving students in Mianyang, one of the worst-hit cities in the May 12 quake.     In a tent school, where more than 500 students from the destroyed Beichuan Middle School were studying, Wen encouraged them to study harder following the calamity.     "Let us not forget the earthquake," he told the students in a tender voice. "Then you will know what life is all about -- it is bumpy, as the roads are."     "Today, people save us and take good care of us. In the future, we will help them in return," the premier added.     "Trials and tribulations serve only to revitalize the nation," he wrote on the blackboard to encourage them. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (C) salutes with the students to pay tribute to the quake victims during his visit to the makeshift tent school at Jiuzhou Stadium in Mianyang City, southwest China's Sichuan Province, May 23, 2008. Wen Jiabao went to the temporary schoolhouse of Beichuan Middle School and the makeshift tent school established at Jiuzhou Stadium in Mianyang on Friday to visit teachers and students who survived the May 12 earthquake.    The students, many of whose 1,300 schoolmates and teachers were killed or missing, resumed classes on Monday.     Wen also visited tent schools near the Jiuzhou Indoor Stadium in downtown Mianyang. There, he put on a red scarf and joined primary school students to salute the quake dead.     During his visit on Friday, the premier underlined that providing shelters for the quake victims and preventing infectious diseases and secondary disasters are the priorities of the current relief work.     His first trip to the region was just hours after the mid-afternoon earthquake jolted Sichuan.

BEIJING, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese shares sank to a 15-month low on Tuesday in very low volume, amid weak investor confidence.     The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index fell 2.76 percent to 2,794.75, its 10th loss in a row. The Shenzhen Component Index fared worse, sinking 4.03 percent, or 395.77 points, to 9,429.50.     The Hushen 300 Index, which reflects about 60 percent of the combined market value in Shanghai and Shenzhen, closed at 2,842.68 points, down 109.57 points, or 3.71 percent. Investors read information at a stock trading hall in Shanghai, China, June 10, 2008. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index fell 2.76 percent to 2,794.75, its 10th loss in a row    Total turnover was just 67.5 billion yuan (9.65 billion U.S. dollars).     Financial, oil and petrochemical, real estate, mining, transportation and broker stocks led the plunge.     China Merchant Property, for example, dipped 7.36 percent to 16.12 yuan. A man looks at the electronic board showing the stock index at a securities exchange in Shanghai, east China, June 17, 2008. The Shanghai index slid through the 2,800-point mark, touching 2,799.33 points at midday, shortly after the National Bureau of Statistics said the growth rate of fixed-asset investment slowed in the first five months.     Urban fixed-asset investment rose 25.6 percent year-on-year to 4.026 trillion yuan in the first five months of 2008. The growth rate was 0.3 percentage points below the same period last year and 0.1 percentage point less than the January-April period this year.     Analysts said the market was also being undermined by surging world oil prices, weakening regional economies and the government's efforts to curb liquidity and tame inflation.     The People's Bank of China, the central bank, earlier this month lifted the bank reserve ratio by a full percentage point to 17.5 percent.

KIEV, Sept 19 (Xinhua) -- The Seventh Euro-China Forum ended Friday in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, as participants called for further dialogue and cooperation between China and Europe.     In the three-day forum entitled "Silk Road of the 21st century," nearly 200 politicians, academicians, economists from Europe and Asia discussed Sino-Europe relations and economic cooperation.     Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko said China has made great achievements in its economic development and "Ukraine is willing to learn China's successful experiences and strengthen exchanges and cooperation with China."     China has just successfully hosted the 2008 Olympic Games and its scale and level was impressive, the president said in a message to the forum.     Addressing the forum, former French Prime Minister Laurent Fabius said that apart from economic cooperation, the Europeans and Chinese should enhance their cultural exchanges to know each other even better.     "The economic and trade relations is the core of the Europe- China cooperation. We, Europeans and Chinese, should seize every opportunity to smoothen out potential frictions and to bridge the gap between the intensification of our commercial relationship and the weakness of our intellectual exchanges. In this respect, the Euro-China Forum plays a crucial part. And its influence keeps growing." he said.     Fabius also noted that Europe in the past called China "a sleeping giant" and the giant is now waking up.     "The success of the Beijing Olympic Games showed China's vigor and enthusiasm," he said.     Chinese ambassador to Ukraine Zhou Li said that Ukraine is an important country in Europe and the Chinese government attaches great importance to developing relations with Ukraine and Europe.     The bilateral economic and trade relations between China and Ukraine have developed steadily in recent years, he said.     "I believe the friendly cooperative relations between China and Ukraine will see a more brilliant future thanks to bilateral joint efforts," Zhou Li said.     The non-governmental forum was initiated by China Europe International Business School to foster unofficial exchanges between the two sides of the Eurasian continent. The forum was first held in 2002 in Barcelona, Spain.

BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan said on Thursday the country is fully confident and capable of overcoming the current economic difficulties, vowing to work closely with other countries to safeguard stability of the global financial market.     Wang, in his meeting with former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, said China has already taken relevant measures to face up to the turbulences of the international financial market.     As the largest developing country and a rising market, China's priority is to well handle its own problems, he said.     He believes China has great potential in domestic market and economic growth, adding the country would continue to take measures to maintain the stable and relatively fast economic development.     "The Chinese government is to strengthen coordination with other countries to face up to the global crisis and promote the stability of the global economic and financial market," Wang told Schroeder.     He appreciated the former German Chancellor's contribution to cementing bilateral ties. Regarding both countries as important trade, investment and technical cooperation partners, Wang said to further facilitate bilateral trade cooperation complies with the fundamental interests of both sides.     Schroeder extended congratulations to China's full success in holding the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics. He hopes the two countries to step up cooperation in various areas to push forward bilateral ties.

BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) on Saturday said it expects an increase in grain output for the fifth consecutive year.     The country has harvested nearly 80 percent of its autumn crops and expects 2008 to be a bumper year, the ministry stated.     The State Grain Information Center earlier estimated that this year's grain output would reach 511.5 million tons, up 10 million tons from 2007. Farmers reap paddy rice in the field in Jiangzhuang village, Donghai county, east China's Jiangsu Province, Oct. 11, 2008. Large parts of China have witnessed crop harvest in this golden autumn.Higher grain production happened in spite of natural disasters and troubled domestic and international economic environments, the MOA noted.     The output increase was attributed to government subsidies, pest control and more advance agricultural techniques, the ministry said.     The central government allocated 102.86 billion yuan (15.1 billion U.S. dollars) in agriculture subsidies this year, doubling the money from 2007.
