WASHINGTON – The White House on Friday blasted the House's impeachment inquiry as "completely baseless" and a "reckless abuse of power" ahead of a deadline set by House Democrats for the White House to say whether it would participate in the impeachment proceedings.White House counsel Pat Cipollone sent a letter to House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler attacking the Democrats' impeachment inquiry, though the message did not explicitly say that President Donald Trump's counsel would not take part."As you know, your impeachment inquiry is completely baseless and has violated basic principles of due process and fundamental fairness," Cipollone wrote in a two-paragraph letter. "Adopting articles of impeachment would be a reckless abuse of power by House Democrats, and would constitute the most unjust, highly partisan, and unconstitutional attempt at impeachment in our Nation's history."While the letter doesn't specifically state the White House won't participate, that's what it means, according to a senior administration official."The letter communicates that we will not participate in this process," the official said. The White House counsel concluded the brief letter by quoting Trump's tweet from earlier this week: "Whatever course you choose, as the President has recently stated: 'if you are going to impeach me, do it now, fast, so we can have a fair trial in the Senate, and so that our Country can get back to business.'"This story is breaking and will be updated. 1498

Two children were killed and nine people were injured after a stolen police cruiser crashed into two parked cars in Dayton, Ohio, Monday night. The cars had been parked outside the Dayton Public Library when they were struck around 7:22 p.m., Dayton Police Lt. Eric Henderson said.According to Henderson, Dayton police originally responded to a call for a stabbing shortly after 7 p.m. The suspect in that incident had fled, he said.Police in nearby Riverside then received a 911 call about a car that had driven into a tree and went to check on the accident. When the Riverside officer exited his police cruiser, the suspect from the stabbing call -- who had abandoned the car driven into the tree -- stole the officer's car and fled the scene at a high speed, Henderson said. The suspect crashed the police cruiser into two vehicles that were carrying 11 people between them, including seven children. All 11 occupants were taken to local hospitals and at least three of them were in life-threatening condition when they were transported, Henderson said. Two of the children later died, he said. Two Riverside officers sustained minor injuries when the suspect struck their vehicle. 1191

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Peace Corps is telling its volunteers around the world that it is suspending all operations globally and evacuating all volunteers in light of the spread of the new coronavirus. In an open letter to volunteers posted Sunday on its website, the federal agency's director, Jody Olsen, says the decision follows recent evacuations in China and Mongolia due to the outbreak. Olsen says that with evacuations now underway at other posts and travel becoming more challenging by the day, the agency decided to expand the suspension and evacuations. The Peace Corps was established in 1961 during the Kennedy administration as a government-run volunteer program serving nations around the world.Read the full letter from Director Jody Olsen: 767
