AURORA, Colo. -- Inside the HealthONE Behavioral Health and Wellness Center in Aurora, Colorado, doctors and other staff members are dealing with a surge of patients.“With the impact of COVID, we have seen an increase in patients,” said HealthONE occupational therapist Emma Kowal.And one staff member, in particular, is bringing a level of care most others cannot.“A.J.’s definitely my favorite co-worker,” said technician Colin Smith.“He knows when we put the vest on – it’s time to go to work,” Kowal said.Three-year-old A.J. is a Labrador and golden retriever mix who came on board at HealthONE just in the nick of time, you could say - one month before COVID-19 shut down much of the country.“A.J. comes in and he’s instantly disarming,” Smith said.“This unbounding sense of love that he can provide to people,” Kowal said.A.J. is working with Kowal, visiting as many as 100 patients a week.“Whether that’s petting him, just touching him, brushing him,” she said. “Earlier someone bent down and kissed him on the head.”HealthONE and other mental health inpatient facilities like it are seeing a critical care need. The CDC’s latest numbers show 40% of U.S. adults reporting some kind of mental health issue – depression, anxiety and substance use among them – because of various challenges and hardships related to the coronavirus.“Dogs are often really familiar and really comforting for people,” Kowal said.Just this week, A.J. is visiting a floor of adolescents who recently attempted suicide.“The kids love him so much,” Smith said. “The way their faces just kind of light up when he comes on the unit. I wish they did that for me.”And Smith says it goes way beyond that.“A.J. is also a dream colleague for staff,” Smith said. “Oh my gosh, so much. He definitely helps when the staff gets stressed out. As our country works to rebound, companies are managing the pressure of keeping workplaces safe.Employers are taking precautions ahead of Thanksgiving with concerns about the coronavirus spreading over the holiday.Companies are doing everything from issuing memos, reminding workers about the public health guidance on gatherings and travel, to asking workers to sign pledges they'll keep gatherings small.But there are limits to how much say your boss has on what you're doing outside of work.“They are allowed to inquire about what their travel plans might be, what their off-duty conduct might be and they can ask employees to disclose that information,” said Christine Lamb, an employment attorney with Fortis Law Partners.Lamb says many states prevent employers from discriminating against workers who are doing things outside of work that are lawful.But if you aren't following policies your work put in place for COVID-19, they can ask you to go through some type of coaching or counseling.Lamb advises companies against checking in on their workers on social media.“You might have an employee who is at a gathering of 50 people and they're not posting anything on social media. The employer might not know what's going on and another employee that posts a photograph of them with 10 people on social media, there's just a risk of that unequal application of the rules,” said Lamb.She says one thing employers should be thinking about now is what does next week look like for the company post-Thanksgiving. That includes having a plan for people to work from home if that's possible.One drug maker told the Wall Street Journal that it's offering workers a paid 2-week quarantine if they need it after the holiday, where they'll be expected to work from home. 1773

  

As some companies consider making work-from-home permanent, others see the value in creating a workplace for employees. "We've always been flexible in our workplace, we've always allowed people to work from home if they want, and what we learned is that people do want a place that is their own that we can come into," said Reid Carr, CEO of the marketing agency Red Door Interactive. After years of leasing an office in downtown San Diego, the company wanted to create its own space, designed to foster collaboration and growth."We were excited when we found it, we had a vision for how this whole process was going to go down," said Carr. The company purchased nearly half an acre of property to create a campus-style workplace. But after the pandemic hit, they overhauled the design to ensure it was a space employees not only wanted to go to but could feel safe in.The new campus will incorporate touchless features throughout the buildings, like doors and water bottle filling stations. They're creating outdoor meeting spaces with heaters and shades so that they can be used year-round. And inside, they're investing in the best available HVAC systems for air filtration."I'm learning at all this stuff as we go, but we're looking at hospital grade stuff. The perspective we took is there's always going to be flus and colds, so why not do these things that will help keep people from spreading disease," said Carr. In addition to having their own socially distanced desks, employees will have designated areas separate from visitors, including the kitchen. One building will be the epicenter of conference rooms so they can be easily cleaned more frequently."Certain things never change. You want to feel like you belong to something, you want to connect with people," said Carr. The company plans to break ground on its new campus in early September, with plans to complete the project in April 2021. 1916
