SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Thirty-thousand families could have their power shut off at any moment. SDG&E warning that with high fire danger, some customers may be in the dark for the start of Christmas Eve.Billy Joyce is one of those customers.“You definitely start to think about it as you sleep, as you’re awake,” said Joyce. He lives with his family and ranch full of horses in Alpine. That’s a lot of mouths to feed when you may be in the dark.“Are we going to have to worry about evacuating?” said Joyce. “What’s going to happen to our animals? All that stuff you start to worry about.”He has a generator that will run the well and some lights, but it doesn’t power everything.“You can’t start the oven or you can’t start you range, you can’t have all the lights on,” said Joyce. That rage and oven are vital tools he needs to not only feed his family, but the 75 other people he’s making holiday dinners for.“Knowing the power would go out we had to start cooking at 5:00 this morning. I didn’t know if it was going to get shut down at 9 a.m. or what have you,” said Joyce. The chef and for Dinner Bell SD raised more than ,000 to helps those who would otherwise go hungry. Joyce selflessly taking on a big project while the threat of fire and no electricity still looms.“Starting tomorrow we’re delivering prime rib and ham dinners along with all the fixing and over 0 in gifts per family,” said Joyce. “Just normal people trying to get by, and have young kids, and just bummed they can’t have a Christmas.”Joyce says because he started early, he was able to get all of the cooking done while the power was still on.As of Wednesday night, about 400 customers in Campo, Descanso, and Potrero had been impacted by the safety shutoffs, according to SDG&E. 1769

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The Valley Fire has forced many East County residents to evacuate, but one homeowner said he and his family have decided to stay in their home and ride the situation out.Leo Prado told ABC 10News, “Where are we going to go? It’s not like we just have luggage and we can go into a hotel. We have animals here.”Prado said picking up and leaving his home in the Deerhorn Valley area, near Jamul, isn’t an easy task, especially with horses and dogs on his property.Prado and his family are staying put, as their area is only under a voluntary evacuation as of Tuesday afternoon.According to Prado, his property has not had power since the Valley Fire started on Saturday. He said San Diego Gas & Electric keeps pushing back the restoration time, which is affecting his decisions.RELATED COVERAGEINTERACTIVE MAP: Valley Fire erupts in Japatul Valley areaPHOTOS: Valley Fire erupts in East CountySocial media reaction to Valley FireCheck today's weather forecast in your area“They keep kicking the can. The Valley Fire continues to impact SDG&E power lines in the area of the fire. When there is an appropriate level of containment, allowing for safe conditions, SDG&E crews will be allowed to inspect the power lines for damage and will make necessary repairs to ensure their safe operation. We continue to coordinate closely with the CALFIRE Incident commander and have crews staged in the area who will work to restore power once CALFIRE determines it’s safe to enter the area.”The utility urges customers to check for updates on power outages/restorations at https://www.sdge.com/residential/customer-service/outage-center/outage-map.Meanwhile, the Red Cross is working to find hotels for those who show up at designated evacuation centers.Click here for more information on evacuations. 2415

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Time to celebrate, San Diego. Your two favorite tiger cubs are ready for visitors at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Friday the zoo released video of the cubs enjoying their new home. The approximately 3-month-old, rescued Bengal tiger cub and his 4-month-old companion, a Sumatran tiger cub are settling in nicely at the Tull Family Tiger Trail. “The two cubs are adjusting really well to their new home,” said Lori Hieber, senior mammal keeper at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. “They’re doing great. They act like little brothers; they play and cuddle a lot, and they squabble a bit like most brothers, but it’s all natural, healthy behavior.”The Bengal tiger cub was brought to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park on  August 23, 2017, after being confiscated by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers during a vehicle inspection at the U.S./Mexico port of entry near San Diego. RELATED: Customs and Border Protection agents seize tiger cub at US-Mexico borderHe remains under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The Sumatran tiger cub was born at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, but his mother was unable to care for him properly. RELATED: Washington, DC tiger cub flown to San Diego to be paired with smuggled tigerThe cubs have bonded well and are growing quickly - weighing in at 32 pounds. They are fully weaned from formula, and now eat an exclusively carnivore diet.As they continue to grow, the Bengal tiger will eventually outweigh the Sumatran tiger by about 200 pounds, given the difference between these two tiger subspecies.“We feel really fortunate to have these two cubs here,” said Hieber. “It was an unusual circumstance for us to acquire them, but we think they’re in the best possible hands, and they’re going to have a wonderful life while they’re here at Tiger Trail.” The cubs will be visible to guests daily from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. They may also be seen occasionally on the Safari Park’s online Tiger Cam.Like all tigers, the critically endangered Sumatran tiger and endangered Bengal tiger subspecies face many challenges in the wild, from loss of habitat to conflicts with humans, but the biggest threat continues to be poaching. Tigers are killed by poachers who illegally sell tiger body parts, mostly for folk remedies. People can help protect wild tigers by avoiding products made with non-sustainable palm oil, an industry that harms tiger habitat; and by refusing to purchase items made from endangered wildlife. 2528
