Antonia Maryna Gomez is a mom of two in Chula Vista and said it’s been hard to find ways to stay entertained and cool while also remembering social distancing.She’s taken her three-year-old to the pool, visited splash pads, played with water balloons and tried the beach, but she said the crowds were too large for her comfort at the beach. This facility is typically open Monday through Friday, but did open up the weekend of Aug. 15 because of the excessive heat. The Flex Alert goes from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. every day, and everyone is asked to conserve energy to decrease demands during the heat wave and ideally prevent the need to cut off power in areas, however, consumers should be prepared for the likelihood of rotating outages.Between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m., the California Independent System Operator (ISO) is urging consumers to:Set air conditioning thermostats to 78 degrees, if health permits.Defer use of major appliances.Turn off unnecessary lights.Unplug unused electrical devices.Close blinds and drapes.Use fans when possible.Limit time the refrigerator door is open. 2136

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Continuing its success breeding the first southern white rhino through artificial insemination, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park welcomed a second rhino to the mix last week.The unnamed female rhino was born on Nov. 21 just after midnight at the zoo, becoming the 100th southern white rhino born overall at the Safari Park.The rhino's mother, 11-year-old Amani, gave birth to the calf at the park's Nikita Kahn Rescue Center, where she did extremely well during labor and is now bonding with the new calf, the zoo says.RELATED: San Diego Zoo's baby southern white rhino charges into life at the parkThe rhino is the second southern white rhino born via hormone-induced ovulation and artificial insemination in North America. The first rhino, Edward, was born at the park on July 28.“We are so excited to welcome another healthy calf to the rhino crash at the Nikita Kahn Rhino Rescue Center,” said Barbara Durrant, of San Diego Zoo Global. “We are very pleased Amani did so well with the birth of her first calf, and she is being very attentive to her baby. The calf is up and walking, and nursing frequently, which are all good signs. Not only are we thankful for this healthy calf, but this birth is significant, as it also represents a critical step in our effort to save the northern white rhino from the brink of extinction.”Southern white rhinos are designated as "near threatened" on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species. There are an estimated 18,000 southern white rhinos left in the wild.San Diego Zoo hopes that the science used to successfully breed the southern white rhino lead to the genetic recovery of the subspecies northern white rhino, of which only two remain on the planet and are females. Once the science is perfected, the zoo says southern white rhinos could serve as surrogates for embryos of their northern counterparts. City governments are coming up with different ways to help local businesses stay afloat.Rediscovering the great outdoors has been a roller coaster ride for city tacos owner, Gerald Torres."We kind of did a 180 and closed it all down, and now we're doing a 180 again and opening up for patios," Torres said about his La Mesa location. This comes after the city of La Mesa enacted an Executive Order on Thursday, which allows businesses to use outdoor spaces for dining, displaying products, and other services.Meanwhile, Coronado waived its alcohol prohibition in city parks, just ahead of this weekend's Spreckels Park Outdoor Dining Room event. This is a move to get people to buy local take-out, and picnic outdoors.Coronado also approved gyms to hold classes at Spreckels Park, Bradley Field, and the beach."We feel fortunate that we live in a town where we can just jump out into the park and do yoga," Stephanie Anderson with Island Yoga Coronado said.Tuesday, San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer signed an Executive Order waiving permitting requirements for sidewalks and parking lots for restaurants expanding outdoors.On the same day, Chula Vista approved plans to block off car traffic on Third Avenue on weekend evenings. This will help diners expand their businesses onto the entire street, not just on sidewalks and parking lots. The Third Avenue Village Association will discuss details and the start date at a special meeting next Wednesday.On Wednesday, Poway approved its Shared Outside Spaces (SOS) program, which lets houses of worship and gyms to hold activities at city parks. The city began accepting applications Friday morning. The city says we could be seeing yoga classes at parks as early as Monday.Both local governments and businesses must stay nimble to fight through the pandemic."There is no quit in my team," Torres said. "Everyone has stepped up to the plate. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As many San Diego business owners fold due to coronavirus pandemic pressures, a few brave entrepreneurs are launching their businesses now, including a Pacific Beach couple that turned their passion for plants into a "blooming" business.It was the sign of the times for boxing instructor Cody Warden -- COVID-19 made him jobless."I was laid off during that time," Warden said. "It was not legal for me to teach boxing."His girlfriend, Tammy Nguyen, a social media content manager, was also now working out of their Pacific Beach home. But when the couple looked around, all they saw was joy."We were getting all these houseplants in our house, and it was filling this void if you will," Warden said. "It brought us companionship in a time when it was really difficult to see your friends or family."So they took a leap of faith last month, and decided to turn their passion into a business. They launched IvyMay & Co., an online houseplant curating company that offers tips and free, contact-less delivery anywhere in San Diego County."Plants are a form of therapy for people who might be depressed during this time, and being able to take care of these plants and seeing them grow gave a lot of people happiness," Nguyen said.Science backs this up. A 2015 study published in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology looked at the psychological responses of young adults to a computer task, versus an indoor plant-related task. Researchers found that people who interacted with plants had significantly lower blood pressure, as well as physiological and psychological stress.Although Warden and Nguyen cannot see their customer's smiles underneath the masks, they can hear it in their voices when they deliver. They say it reassures them that starting a business that brings joy during the pandemic was the right thing to do."If I could keep a house plant alive, you can too!" Warden laughed. "There's no such thing as a green thumb. Basic things, learn how to read your plant, and listen to what it's telling you."As the business grows, Warden and Nguyen hope to partner with local artists who can create unique pots for their plants. 2164

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As Seaworld San Diego reopens its doors this weekend, an East County grandmother and passholder says she and her grandson won't be making a visit.Visiting SeaWorld is one of Rose Becker's favorite things to do with her 4-year-old grandson Vincent."He just loves walking around and looking at the dolphins, orcas, and sea lions," said Becker.So when SeaWorld announced they would be reopening, she got excited.RELATED: Several San Diego County businesses to reopen indoors with limits under new guidance"I was planning on taking him Sunday. Was so excited to hear SeaWorld was back open. My grandson was so excited ... and then my excitement, down to frustration," said Becker.She was frustrated because of the cost. The park's attractions will be limited to outdoor animal exhibits and shows. A ticket will include food, drink, and merchandise. Passholders like Becker get a complimentary ticket but must pay for the lanyard for the food and beverages.
