BEIJING, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- China hopes to work with the United States to maintain a healthy and stable relationship which benefits the people of both countries and the world, said Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo on Wednesday.     "Sino-U.S. relations are at a crucial point linking the past to the future," Dai told the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John D. Negroponte, who was here to honor the 30th anniversary of Sino-U.S. relations.     Dai said China and the U.S. shared common interests and consolidated a strategic foundation. This paved the way for further development of the relationship.     He summarized four achievements in Sino-U.S. relations made during the Bush administration.     --The two countries confirmed the relationship as stakeholders and constructive cooperators.     --The two heads of state maintained frequent contacts.     --High-level strategic dialogues were institutionalized to promote mutual trust and cooperation.     --Cooperation in all areas deepened such as major international and regional issues.     "Sino-U.S. relations have made remarkable progress over the past three decades and this linked the two countries closely," Dai said.     Negroponte said both the U.S. and China were important countries in the world and needed more dialogue and cooperation to safeguard global security and stability.     The strategic dialogue and the strategic and economic dialogue were two effective mechanisms and should be continued, he said.

BEIJING, Dec. 1 -- Amid the coupling effects of shrinking global demand and rising operating costs, it has been a dramatic upheaval this year for domestic small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) after China started its reforms 30 years ago.    Even as the scene appears a bit scary, there is still a ray of hope if only entrepreneurs note the writing on the wall and go all out to cut costs before they raise the clamor for a bailout. Two women make beds on a production line of the small private firm Nangang Shoemaking Factory in Foshan, Guangdong province. In the first half of 2008, much before the world saw the capital markets going topsy turvy amid the global economic slowdown, over 67,000 SMEs in China went bankrupt, while more than 10,000 labor-intensive textile enterprises downed shutters, according to figures from the Department of SMEs under the National Development and Reform Commission.    In October, 714 companies were closed in Dongguan in Guangdong province, home to over 60,100 private companies and a major manufacturing center in China.     "We will see more companies closing in the coming months, with the figure likely to cross 1,000 after Christmas," says Dongguan Deputy Mayor Jiang Ling.     Most of the international buyers of Chinese products failed to get letters of credit in October leading to significant cancellations of Christmas orders, says Frank FX. Gong, chief China economist at JPMorgan Securities (Asia Pacific) Limited in a recent report. "Indeed, 'things suddenly ceased' was the common comment we heard on the ground lately," he says.     But for some like Luo Chun, sales director of tin box maker Dongguan Tinpak Co, the freeze on Christmas orders has not yet meant closing. Luo says overseas order fell by 10 percent from June to October, normally the peak time for Christmas orders.

BEIJING, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- The Seventh Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) issued a Chair's Statement here on Saturday, agreeing to issue the Beijing Declaration on Sustainable Development.     The statement said the leaders held extensive and in-depth discussions on issues of realizing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as well as the sustainable development targets agreed in Johannesburg, strengthening energy security cooperation, jointly addressing the challenge of climate change, and environmental protection, including water resources, forests and air, and improving social cohesion under the framework of sustainable development.     Leaders stressed the importance of mid-term review of the MDGs, and underscored the need for ASEM members to further deepen international development cooperation to meet the IADGs, particularly the MDGs, in a timely manner.     Leaders expressed their support for strengthened international cooperation on climate change that could help assess impacts and vulnerabilities, build adaptive capacities, and support adaptation actions.     Leaders also emphasized the need for the sustainable management of forest and ocean as well as other territorial, coastal and marine ecosystems.     Leaders stressed the need to focus on development needs and environmental sustainability in the energy sector. They emphasized the need for Asia-Europe cooperation to ensure the availability of environmentally sound energy at a reasonable price to support economic growth and that the latest technology should be intended to increase energy efficiency.     Leaders recognized that the impact of globalization is increasingly being felt by the people of ASEM members, and share a common interest in strengthening the social dimension of globalization and improving social cohesion.     To this end, leaders unanimously agreed to issue the Beijing Declaration on Sustainable Development.     The Seventh Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM 7) was held in Beijing on 24 and 25 October 2008. The Meeting was the first gathering of the leaders of 45 members of ASEM since its second round of enlargement.

Lhasa, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- Four media organizations from China's neighboring countries will be invited for the first time to cover the annual session of the People's Congress of the Tibet Autonomous Region to be held on Jan. 14.     The plenary session of the Regional Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference to be held on Jan. 12 will also be open to foreign press.     According to a press conference held by the two sessions on late Saturday, the invitations to the four foreign media were an effort to "let the world know better about a real and new Tibet through an objective visual angle."     Names of the foreign media organizations were not specified.     Tibet authorities also revealed that they will invite diplomats with Nepal's consulate general to Lhasa, capital of the autonomous region, to attend the opening and closing ceremonies of the sessions.     There will be nearly 200 journalists from 16 media organizations home and abroad to report the annual sessions this year, the press conference was told.     At the two sessions, report on the work of the regional government will be discussed, as well as local budgets and plans for social and economic developments.
