Those two words cause a lot of stress, anxiety, even depression in so many Americans out there.Like Denise Ferguson.“Oh, my student loans are going to outlast me!” Ferguson said.Like 41 million other Americans, Denise is drowning in student loan debt — 0,000 in her case.“It’s funny because I’m an attorney and a lot of people assume that we attorneys are rich and wealthy,” she said.Well, rest assured, Denise is not one of those types of attorneys.She works with abused and neglected children in the foster care system.“We’re the only alleged first-world country that has all these issues with student loans and people being put into debt in order to do something good,” she said.Denise went to a state school in Pennsylvania for college, the University of Akron for law school.Fifteen years later, the amount of student loan debt she has barely has a dent in it.“If I win the lotto, it’ll get paid off. If I don’t win the lotto, there’s no hope that that’s ever going away,” Denise said. “My house only cost ,000 if that puts anything in perspective.”The average student loan debt for graduates is about ,000. It's the second-highest consumer debt category in the U.S., coming in only after mortgage debt.Since the federal CARES Act went into effect, more than 40 million federal student loan borrowers have had their payments paused and interest rates set to 0%.While that is set to expire on Jan. 31 now, it’s not clear what the incoming Biden administration will do.There are pushes and proposals to wipe out student loan debt — anywhere from ,000 to ,000.But nothing is clear, nothing is done, and experts say, do not rely on what could be.“Do not wait until January to expect any executive orders, there’s just so much uncertainty going on right now,” said Dr. Lakshmi Balasubramanyan, a banking and finance professor at Case Western Reserve University.She said it is crucial to have a plan in place before payments start back up again.Contact your loan servicer and talk through your individual situation.If you’ve lost or changed your job during the pandemic, switch to an income-based repayment plan, or discuss hardship options.“If you plan for the worst-case scenario, the best-case scenario is where there’s some loan forgiveness — then that would be a pleasant surprise but right now, you should plan to pay it off because you don’t want to go into default status,” Balasubramanyan said.She also advises heading to studentaid.gov to see if you possibly qualify for any loan forgiveness programs.Jeremy DiTullio, of the Cleveland Financial Group, says the worst thing borrowers can do is wait and hope for relief that may not come.“I would plan for starting to make your payments. Worst case scenario is that there is some forgiveness or some relief and now you have choices,” DiTullio said. He also suggests borrowers "earn differently" during the pandemic if they have to, to avoid defaulting. Cleanup is underway in Louisiana and southeastern Texas after one of the strongest hurricanes to ever make landfall in the area caused extensive damage and flooding on Thursday.Reports Thursday indicated that Hurricane Laura killed six people, including a 14-year-old girl. Officials expect that number to rise as recovery efforts continue.Laura is continuing to bring heavy winds and rains to the south-central United States. Reports say that the system spun off tornadoes in Arkansas on Thursday night, and the storm will bring heavy rains and 30 mph winds to the Missouri Valley and Ohio Valley regions on Friday.As of Friday morning, more than half a million people in Louisiana are still without electricity. About 200,000 people in Texas are also without power, including 94 percent of people in Orange County, a county bordering Louisiana.Among the areas hardest hit by Laura was Lake Charles, a city in southwest Louisiana. Though it's located about 40 miles inland, massive storm surge and heavy rain have caused extensive flooding in the area. CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) - Coronado residents heard a plan from the Port of San Diego Monday night that would allow for 350 new hotel rooms to be built on the island.Those who showed up were not happy.“Most of the residents don’t want this development to happen,” said resident Kelly Sarber. “The city can’t really handle what we're dealing with right now,” she added, referring to the island’s notorious traffic.The new proposal is part of an update to the Port’s master plan, which includes 2,403 acres of land across 34 miles of waterfront around San Diego Bay.In Coronado, the new master plan would allow for 350 hotel rooms to be built in the north Coronado subdistrict, which includes the Ferry Landing and the area occupied by the existing Marriot Hotel.“What this plan sets out is potential growth for next 30 years,” said Lesley Nishihira, planning director for the Port.She said currently they have not received a plan from a developer to actually build a hotel on the Ferry Landing property. However, if approved, the updated master plan would allow for one to be built eventually. Though, any project proposal would also have to go through a public review period.The comment period for the Master Plan draft goes through July 31. CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) -- The City of Coronado has completed a bridge study in an effort prevent suicides on the Coronado Bay Bridge.The study, conducted by Caltrans, shows that two-thirds of those surveyed say they are in favor of adding a physical barrier on the bridge.The study showcases a number of options for adding a barrier, though there are several popular options.RELATED: Caltrans reveals possible suicide barriers for Coronado Bridge?Among the most popular options is a wire mesh fence that would cost up to million.
