SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – California has confirmed its first openly gay justice to the state’s supreme court.Martin J. Jenkins made history Tuesday as he was confirmed as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of California. The appointment was approved by a unanimous vote in the supreme court courtroom in San Francisco.Justice Jenkins fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Justice Ming Chin on Aug. 31, according to a press release from the state’s judicial branch.Along with being the state’s first openly gay justice, he’s also only the third African American man ever to serve on the court.The judicial branch says Jenkins has held several prominent state and federal judicial positions throughout his career, with his most recent being the governor’s judicial appointments secretary.Prior to his role with the governor, Jenkins served as an associate justice on the First District Court of Appeal from 2008 to 2019. He was appointed by President Bill Clinton to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California in 1997 and served on that bench until 2008.Jenkins earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of San Francisco School of Law. 1180

SEATTLE (AP) — Since September, six sea lions have died from gunshot wounds in central Puget Sound and Kitsap County, Washington.The Seattle Times reports that another seven are suspected to have died from "acute trauma" caused by humans, including a decomposed sea lion with its head sliced off found washed ashore Tuesday in a West Seattle cove.That's according to Seal Sitters Marine Mammal Stranding Network, a group that responds to reports of stranded or dead sea lions.Michael Milstein, a NOAA Fisheries spokesman, has confirmed the deaths of five California sea lions in West Seattle, including four that died of gunshot wounds.NOAA Fisheries law-enforcement agents are investigating these crimes, which are prohibited under the Marine Mammal Protection Act.Between 1998 and 2017, National Geographic reported up to 700 California sea lions were found with gunshot and stab wounds in waters off California, Oregon and Washington. 955

(KGTV) — A dream trip to Africa for a Santee grandmother turned into a nightmare as she sat in a tour bus.Daughter-in-law Tomira Baca-Craig says Jeanette Craig, who retired four years ago, left for South Africa two weeks ago. Jeanette had been saving for the trip for more than a year.  It was her first trip to Africa.A few days after she arrived, she was on a tour bus headed to an animal preserve in the landlocked country of Lesotho when the bus overturned, killing three and injuring more than 12 tourists on board, including Jeanette."Because she had her seatbelt on, she wasn't thrown. She was trapped upside down. When the bus rolled, that's when she sustained all her injuries," said Baca-Craig.Jeanette was transported by helicopter to a clinic just outside Lesotho. She has since undergone several surgeries, suffering a fractured pelvis and leg, and torn ligaments in her legs."Now her pain is just shocking. There's a ton of breakthrough pain every time she shifts because the pelvis is bone on bone," said Baca-Craig.Jeanette is comforted by her daughter, who just arrived in South Africa. Loved ones say they just want to bring her home.  "We'd like to get an MRI and another CT scan to and rule out everything else because it was such a traumatic accident," said Baca-Craig. The problem? SANTEE, Calif. (CNS) - Authorities asked for the public's help in finding the driver of a minivan suspected of following a nine-year-old boy along a street in Santee and trying to entice him to get into the van.The boy told San Diego County Sheriff's Department deputies he was walking alone on Trailridge Avenue, between Hightail Drive and Weston Road, about 5 p.m. Wednesday when the driver asked him to get into the van and go to a community pool with him. The boy refused and walked away and the driver left the area, according to Sgt. Joseph Jarjura.The driver was described as a white man, between 18-20 years old with short black hair, wearing a light-colored T-shirt, Jarjura said, adding a woman may have been in the passenger seat, but no description was available.The minivan was possibly a black Dodge Caravan with tinted windows and black rims.Anyone with information was asked to call the department at 858-565-5200. 938

SAN MARCOS (CNS) - A man who reported his car stolen in San Marcos earlier this week caught a lucky break when he spotted his car in the same area today with the suspected thief inside -- but the suspect left before police were able to apprehend him.The man called law enforcement Wednesday morning to report his car had been taken from his apartment complex on Smilax Road near state Route 78, according to San Diego County Sheriff's Lt. Dave Perkins.Around 9 a.m. Sunday, the man called the Sheriff's Department and told deputies he had seen his car parked nearby with an unknown man inside it, Perkins said.The man reported seeing the suspect get out of his car and walk away. Deputies searched the area and detained a possible suspect, but it was determined he hadn't been involved in the crime, Perkins said.The suspected car thief remained at large. 863
