SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Gas & Electric is warning customers of a scam in which people are getting phone calls and emails saying they owe hundreds of dollars for a new electrical meter.San Diego resident Maria Genova almost fell victim to the scam."It was very elaborate, very credible, very persistent and very convincing," she said.Genova showed 10News an email she received, and Iit had the SDG&E logo and even a QR code. The email said she owed 8.63 for a meter upgrade and if she didn't pay it, her service would be suspended.It also promised hundreds of dollars of other fees for removal, locksmith services and more.Genova also got a pair of phone calls about the issue, which had her convinced that it was legitimate."I was about ready to pay," said Genova. "I had my credit card in hand. But as soon as he said I had to pay cash, I knew there was something wrong."Genova called SDG&E, and Tthey told her the email and phone calls were not from the company.In a statement, SDG&E told 10News that they will never charge customers to replace a smart electric meter and that if they need to do any maintenance on a meter, technicians will contact the resident before doing any work.SDG&E said they've received reports of more than 13,600 scam phone calls already in 2019. It's something they constantly monitor, and they have a page on their website dedicated to helping people identify and avoid scams.Genova said she's glad she didn't lose any money and hopes other people can learn from her close call."Ask questions if you have any doubt," she said. "Call the company themselves, ask if this is true or not before you give anyone your information."Here is the full statement from SDG&E:"We can confirm that this particular case is indeed a scam. The important thing for our customers to know is that SDG&E will not charge them to come out and replace a smart electric meter. The exception to this is when customers choose to opt-out of having a smart meter and ask for an analog model instead. The cost for the opt-out is a one-time meter change fee of and an additional monthly charge, over a three-year period.SDG&E proactively tracks and maintains 1.45 million electric meters in our service territory daily. If we need to replace a malfunctioning meter, our technicians will knock on the door before changing it. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diegans now have even more problems they can report by the touch of a button.The city is continuing to add categories to its "Get it Done" smartphone app, which launched in 2016. The app originally allowed San Diegans to report stormwater and street issues, but currently has nine categories, including code enforcement, graffiti, and even passport appointments.The city says it gets 10,000 reports per month on the app.RELATED: San Diego battles illegally painted red curbsIn August, the city added features that allow people to report cars parked longer than 72 hours, illegal dumping, and HAZMAT related issues. In the next year, the city will allow people to buy trash bins off the app, and to report suspected enforcement violations - such as illegal structures.The city says it requires personal information with a complaint to help verify the facts. "For us, if it's not easy to interact with the city, we're going to put that into 'Get it Done,'" said Alex Hempton, the city's project manager. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Humane Society officials are searching for the person responsible for abandoning a dog in a San Pasqual Valley canyon recently.A grove manager at Bandy Canyon found the neglected dog Friday, according to society officials. The male dog appeared to be an about 2-year-old pit bull mix.The dog was taken to the humane society's Escondido campus, where a veterinary team gave it IV fluids and placed it on a heated bed, as its temperature was low.Because of the dehydrated, neglected condition of the dog, the society's law enforcement arm has opened a felony animal cruelty investigation.Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477 or SDHS law enforcement at 619-299-7012.This week's incident is the third similar incident to occur in the last month. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police are asking the public for help identifying the person they believe stabbed a man to death in Pacific Beach last week.Police say the suspect was engaged in a fight with a 55-year-old man outside the 7-Eleven store at 4340 Mission Boulevard, when he stabbed the victim several times. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. The suspect fled the scene.Surveillance footage of the suspect was released this week. The suspect is described as a 20- to 30-year-old black male, about 5'8" to 5'10" tall, and was wearing a black shirt, blue jeans, and a black hat at the time of the stabbing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police and Crime Stoppers released photos Wednesday in the search for the burglars responsible for taking half a million dollars’ worth of items during break-in at the Fashion Valley Hermes de Paris store.Up to 10 people got out of three vehicles at the north end of the mall about 4:15 a.m. on Sunday, January 18. Surveillance video shows the group approaching the store and using a pry bar to open the front door.The group stole purses, jewelry and clothing worth 0,000 in just two minutes.RELATED: San Diego mall burglars steal from HermesPolice said the group wore hooded sweatshirts and gloves.
