SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus is said to have coined the phrase, “The only constant in life is change.” Like it or not, change happens to all of us. We either learn to embrace it or fall victim to it. A San Diego pastor was on the verge of becoming one of those victims and almost lost his church. Instead, he found a unique way to embrace the oncoming change and gave his ministry new life. “When I got here, we probably had 150 members with an average attendance of 175, and every year it was smaller and smaller,” says Pastor Bill Jenkins. Jenkins arrived at United Methodist Church in the heart of San Diego in 1999. The church was already weak and failing. Like many inner-city pastors, Jenkins was facing the inevitable, a dwindling congregation slowly dying off and the prospect of the church closing its doors. But in 2005, Pastor Jenkins had a life-changing idea.“I challenged the church to become a ministry center,” adds Jenkins. “And they said, ‘What is a ministry center,’ and I said, ‘I don’t know.’”What Jenkins and his small congregation would come to learn was rather than attending a one-day a week church on Sunday, the building would serve all those in need seven days a week. It now welcomes refugees, immigrants, and asylum seekers. It serves as a food pantry for the hungry, a clothing donation center, and twice a week it’s a free clinic with medical students from U.C.S.D and Cal State San Marcos. No insurance, no problem, no questions asked. “So, when people now ask me, ‘What is a Ministry Center?’ It’s easy for me to say we are the 7-day-a-week church,” says Jenkins. Pastor Jenkins gave his last sermon in the church in 2011, but the chapel is still home to 12 different congregations sharing the word of God. “Today, we have somewhere between 1200 and 2000 people who come through our doors,” says Jenkins proudly. “So, we flipped the church. We flipped it from being a dead and dying church to becoming an integral part of the community.” The church wasn’t alone in its transformation; Pastor Jenkins and his family went through one as well. To date, over 7500 asylum seekers have come through the doors of the Christ Ministry Center. Two of them are 5-year-old Harry and his mother. “You would have a hard time convincing me that he is not an angel in disguise,” Jenkins says with Harry on his lap. Pastor Jenkins and his wife were so taken with this little boy they decided to adopt him. Now along with Harry’s mother, they co-parent. Pastor Jenkins may have retired from preaching, and his church may have closed its doors, but embracing change and having a love for all people will always be his legacy in the eyes of his God. “He said, ‘If you welcome the strangers, I will welcome you into heaven,’” says Jenkins. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A group of Black student leaders from Poway Unified School District schools met last week with administrators, principals and counselors to discuss ways to address issues of racism and inequality in the district.The students are the presidents of the Black Student Unions at each of PUSD's five high schools.It was the first meeting since the student leaders sent an email asking to see changes in the district to improve the lives of students of color."Making PUSD not just not racist but transparently anti-racist," said Jade Thompson, president of the BSU at Rancho Bernardo High School.Thompason helped write the email, which also talked about the recently created Instagram account "Black in PUSD,” which anonymously details students' experiences with racism."We just think it was a great way to open up people's eyes cause people like to say not in this community," said Thompson.Superintendent Dr. Kim Phelps agrees, saying, "To hold people accountable, including the district and our teachers and everybody ... I'm proud of our students for doing that.”Phelps and Thompson both described the meeting as productive and positive.Among the issues discussed were student education and assemblies addressing racism. The district is also committing to more diverse hiring and curriculum."It's upon us to try to do better; we have a lot of work to do and we want to do better so it’s a growing and learning opportunity for all of us," said Phelps.The students and administrators also talked about the consequences for racism-related incidents.Students said they'd like to see a form of restorative justice instead of just punishment.Although both students and staff agree there's a lot more to be done, they also say the first step is recognizing the problem and starting the conversation."I have a lot of hope for the future of this year and the years to come," said Thompson. 1906

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A former Border Patrol agent was sentenced Wednesday for trying to smuggle drugs across the U.S.-Mexico border while on duty in 2016.Noe Lopez, 37, of Chula Vista, was sentenced to 70 months in prison for attempting to smuggle methamphetamine and cocaine in exchange for cash. He pled guilty to the charges in June 2017.Investigators say the former Border Patrol agent agreed to pick up backpacks containing the drugs from the north side of the border while on duty. Undercover DEA agents used substances resembling drugs in the backpack drops.RELATED: Border Patrol agent arrested in North San Diego County on drug , weapons chargesIn a conversation with an undercover agent, Lopez discussed the area known as "Goat Canyon" as a preferred location, according to investigators, saying "Honestly, the thing is that there aren’t—there aren’t any cameras.
