ADDIS ABABA, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- Fruitful results have been achieved some one year after the fourth ministerial meeting of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), Chinese envoy and Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin told Xinhua here on Friday.Liu was in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa to attend the 16th African Union (AU) summit as special envoy of the Chinese government.During the FOCAC ministerial meeting held in November 2009 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, the Chinese government announced eight new measures of promoting Sino-African cooperation.Since then, China has been actively implementing various programs and projects according to the eight new measures, Liu said.The “China-Africa Science and Technology Partnership Program” and the “China-Africa Joint Research and Exchange Program” have been launched, Liu said, adding that the aid program of agricultural demonstration center is in smooth implementation process.Meanwhile, China is actively working on establishing the China-Africa partnership in addressing climate change, and is strengthening communication and coordination with Africa on the issue of climate change, Liu said.The Chinese envoy added that various programs and events such as the China-Africa Agricultural Cooperation Forum, the “African Culture in Focus 2010” activities, and the “20+20 Cooperation Plan of Chinese and African Institutions of Higher Learning” have been launched or successfully held. CANBERRA, March 23 (Xinhua) -- Up to 45 native species in Western Australia's Kimberley region will die out within 20 years if no action is taken, latest study showed on Wednesday.The Priority Threat Management to Protect Kimberley Wildlife report, released by Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) on Wednesday, was commissioned by the Wilderness Society.The report showed that at present, 20.2 million U.S. dollars a year is spent on conservation efforts in the Kimberley, which is home to an assortment of threatened species.However, the report said even if that money was spent properly, the region would still lose some 31 native animals.The numbers of many more birds, reptiles and mammals, such as the Spotted Tree Monitor and the Western Chestnut Mouse, would dwindle.It called for an immediate cash injection of 96 million U.S. dollars to save creatures like the Golden Bandicoot, the Scaly- Tailed Possum and the Monjon Rock Wallaby from extinction.It will follow by an ongoing investment of 40.43 million U.S. dollars annually in the Kimberley to protect its species, as well as boost plant life, help the climate and conserve indigenous land."This investment is great value," one of the report's six co- authors Hugh Possingham said in a statement released on Wednesday."We can save some of Australia's most iconic mammals and birds at a cost of only about one million U.S. dollars per species per year."

CHANGSHA, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- More than 8,000 fake goods were destroyed Tuesday in central China's Hunan Province, as part of Chinese efforts to protect intellectual property rights (IPR).Supervised by Changsha customs official, trucks rolled over a huge pile of counterfeit electronic devices in the city, the provincial capital.The trucks crashed imitation Nokia, Motorola and Apple laptop computers, cell phones, earphones and compact discs.Pirated books and Gucci handbags were incinerated.Changsha customs have confiscated more than 34,000 fake items worth 1.3 million yuan (197,470 U.S. dollars) over the past two years, said Liu Zili, a customs official.Some confiscated fake goods were donated to Red Cross societies and quake-devastated regions, in accordance with China's IPR protection regulations.

NAIROBI, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- The East Africa Community (EAC) and the Chinese government held talks on Wednesday to explore new areas of cooperation and boost trade between both sides.A statement from the EAC Secretariat said China's Ministry of Commerce Director Department of West Asian and African Affairs Chai Zhijing held discussions with Secretary General of the East African Community Juma Mwapachu on bilateral cooperation. "The Chinese delegation were at the EAC Headquarters to explore areas of cooperation specifically trade and investment opportunities in areas such as agriculture, animal-husbandry, production and processing of mineral and other natural resources, manufacturing, commerce and logistics, and tourism," the statement said.It noted that the delegation wants to know how China could support and facilitate cross-border infrastructure projects such as transport, communication and power.The Chinese and EAC officials also discussed cooperation in human resource development and training.Speaking during the meeting, Mwapachu said the visit by the director will open further the cooperation space between China and the EAC.He said the prevalence of Chinese firms in the region was very high in the construction industry and some other infrastructural developments.He noted that Chinese companies were involved in the construction of the EAC Arusha-Namanga-Athi River Road projectThe EAC secretary general said the regional economic bloc, which comprises Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi, was truly looking forward to forging a lasting relationship with China.Chai said China has very good economic and cultural relations with all the five partner states of the East African Community and that all the five states were enjoying economic stability.He said EAC had a reputable framework for integration and development for the region, adding that "these form the solid basis for establishing cooperation with the People's Republic of China."The two sides agreed to come up with a concrete framework for engaging each other in the identified areas of cooperation, within one month.
