SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County has opened cool zones as the county faces scorching temperatures amid the coronavirus pandemic. A cool zone will open at noon today in the former Sears building at Chula Vista Center, providing socially distant and disinfected spaces to beat the heat.With a heat wave expected this weekend and into next week and the city's recreation centers and libraries closed to the public due to the pandemic, the city issued a statement saying the opening of a cool zone was paramount.The Chula Vista cool zone will be open when temperatures exceed 85 degrees, and will be operated by city recreation staff. It will remain open through next week.RELATED: Dangerous heat set to sweep through San Diego CountyVisitors to the zone, located at 565 Broadway, are required to wear a face covering while inside and may bring one personal bag.There will be seating available and movies playing. Each area will be disinfected between uses. Water is allowed, but no food, no smoking and no pets. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Southwestern College President and Superintendent Kindred Murillo will retire at the end of this academic year after serving 24 years in the California Community College System, the college confirmed Wednesday.Beginning as an adjunct faculty member at Desert Community College District, Murillo has served in various roles. She spent 11 years as a chief business official and served her last nine years in the system as a college president, first at Lake Tahoe Community College District, and then at Southwestern College for more than four years."It is the commitment faculty, classified professionals and administrators have had to the success and achievement of our students that has made my career so rewarding," Murillo said. "Southwestern College has been the most remarkable community college I have had the privilege of serving during my entire academic career. We have worked together to establish a path of transformation for our students and our community."Murillo guided the college's accreditation status from warning to reaffirmation within her first year. According to a college statement, she also tackled a backlog of personnel investigations and complaints, increasing accountability at the district.Early in her tenure, she formed an Advisory Task Force on Inclusion & Race Relations that was intended to acknowledge a history of racism and inequity by design and to "develop transformative interventions designed to strengthen, enhance and support culture change," a college document said.Governing Board President Nora Vargas credits Murillo's commitment for positioning Southwestern College as a model of equity in the California Community College System."Murillo's transformative changes would have taken any other leader a decade to accomplish," Vargas said. "The work she has done will continue to benefit our students and our community for years to come. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - People who visited the Lucky Lady Casino in San Diego on weekends over a six-month period ending in late September may have been exposed to tuberculosis, county health officials reported Tuesday.The Health and Human Services Agency is working with the casino to inform patrons and staff who may have been exposed between Feb. 23 and Sept. 30, said county spokesman Jose A. Alvarez.HHSA will provide testing at no cost to patrons who were potentially exposed, Alvarez said. Testing will be offered from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Dec. 8 and 9 at the casino at 5526 El Cajon Blvd., he said.People who visited the casino are encouraged to contact their doctor or county TB Control if they cannot get tested on Dec. 8 or 9, Alvarez said.Beginning Tuesday, testing is also being offered to casino staff at no cost by county Occupational Health, according to HHSA officials, who noted it can take eight to 10 weeks after exposure for someone to test positive for TB.Those wanting more information may call Lucky Lady Casino at (619) 287- 6690 or the county TB Control Program (619) 692-8621.Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer, said most people who are exposed do not become infected.
