SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - High school students are managing a new normal as they apply for colleges."This is a hot topic," says Matt Hunt, a guidance counselor at Rancho Bernardo High School. "This is something that kids are concerned about, parents are concerned about, people are curious about."The biggest adjustment for the 2021 fall application period is the use of standardized tests, like the SAT or ACT.Because of coronavirus concerns, many testing centers have been unavailable, making it difficult for students to take a test. To level the playing field across county and state lines, schools are either eliminating a test requirement or making it optional.According to FairTest, the National Center for Fair and Open Testing, more than 1,600 colleges and universities have made those tests "optional" for admission in the upcoming school year. That means students are not required to submit a test score, but can if they choose. FairTest also says more than 60 schools have gone "test-blind." That means they will not use a test score to determine admission, even if a student puts it in the application.In California, the Cal State system says they will be test-blind in 2021. The UC Schools initially said they would be test-optional, but a court decision over the summer forced them to be test-blind. The UC schools also say they plan to eliminate traditional standardized tests by 2025, and will write their own admissions test.RELATED: University of Californai to Stop Using ACT, SAT through 2024Without tests, counselors say students need to focus on their grades and personal statements and essays to stand out."I would tell students to focus on answering those questions candidly," says Tracy Wilson, the Director of College and Career Readiness for Grossmont Union High School District. "They need to answer them with their own student voice, because if they are a student who has struggled with those opportunities, that's the place to share the 'why.'"Wilson also says to focus your search and only worry about the application standards for the schools you plan to apply. "Colleges want a variety of students," she says. "The academics are important, but it's not the only thing... Put yourself out there try do your best. I really feel like colleges are going to be very welcoming on their campuses next fall."Hunt agrees, saying it's important to stay on top of any changes that occur in the next few months. He tells students to stay in communication with your school counselor and the admissions offices where you plan to apply. "You're going to apply to a handful of schools, you'll see what happens," says Hunt. "But there's a school out there, and an opportunity out there for everyone. So remember that." 2735

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Eight San Diego County gyms have filed a lawsuit against state and county leaders over the public health orders due to the coronavirus pandemic.The gym owners say that restrictions on their business by California and the county have caused, "difficulty in satisfying their financial obligations, having been forced to lay off a significant number of employees" and they have "expended large sums of money in an effort to comply with Defendants’ vague orders."Gym owners say they have lost tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars, in some cases, retrofitting their businesses to be compliant with reopening measures.The Plaintiffs include Metroflex Gym in Oceanside, Ramona Fitness Center in Ramona, Boulevard Fitness in University Heights, Deadweight Strength in Grantville, Convoy Strength in Kearny Mesa, IB Fitness in Imperial Beach, and Being Fit in both Clairemont and Mira Mesa.The owners added that they have sought clarification of the orders and how they're enforced by law enforcement and the county, but have not received any clarification from officials.The lawsuit claims that public health orders labeling their businesses as nonessential without allowing them to challenge it, and mandatory closures, are not constitutional.Defendants include Gov. Gavin Newsom, all five San Diego County supervisors, and the mayors of each city where the gyms are located. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- High school sports in San Diego County and across California will happen during the 2020-21 school year but on a modified schedule that will push the start for fall sports, such as football, to early winter.The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Monday released a schedule that shows the last date for Section and Regional/State Championships. Fall sports' championships, according to the schedule, shows end dates in March and April. The schedule shows spring sports, including soccer, basketball, and track and field, with championship end dates in May and June.CIF officials said that “most Section start dates will commence in December 2020 or January 2021.”In a press release posted on its website, the CIF San Diego Section said:The California Interscholastic Federation, San Diego Section (CIF-SDS) is excited to see the foundations of a plan to return high school athletics throughout the state of California for the 2020-2021 school year. Today’s announcement from the state office provides our section with the information necessary to finalize the calendars and schedules for all of our CIF regulated sports, while also acknowledging the importance of the health and safety of our student athletes and coaches by pushing the official start date back to align with the Roadmap to Recovery set by the state of California.Specifics of the plan provides for two seasons of sport, which will serve to maximize the length of each season while not eliminating any athletic opportunities in a reduced athletic calendar for the year. The adjusted calendar distributes the athletic offerings into a Fall/Winter Season, and a Spring Season in hope of balancing the opportunities for all student athletes.In collaboration with our Board of Managers, Conference Presidents, Sport Specific Advisory Committees and Officials Association, we will be coming together over the next couple weeks to finalize the dates and schedules for each of the seasons of sport for our section. Gavin Newsom announced reopening guidelines for schools across the state.Scripps Ranch High School head football coach Marlon Gardinera was one of many parents, coaches, and players who constantly checked the state CIF website Monday morning for any word on the fall sports season."We were waiting with bated breath,” Gardinera said.After learning there will be an opportunity for kids, including his high school senior and freshman sons, to play, Gardinera said, “It really gives us hope ... as opposed to not having a lot of it, really hard to do when you have two sons who are ready to get back out here.”The modified scheduling will force many student-athletes to choose between sports normally played successively.Gardinera told ABC 10News, “You have soccer and baseball ... [They’re] going to have to choose what sport they're going to want to play in that condensed season.”Otay Ranch High School football player Ethan Knight is excited that there is now a plan in place. "My birthday's in January, so it will be a good birthday present. I think it's great because it will be a new environment." Knight said he has used the months during the pandemic to train for the upcoming season. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - For three decades, the Salvation Army has been serving Thanksgiving meals to those in need.This year, it looks a bit different."Just because we have masks and social distancing, their needs haven't changed," said volunteer Elena Misner.Misner says she volunteers on Thanksgiving and Christmas."When I was starting out on my own, the Salvation Army helped me with classes, clothes, services," she said.She says without that initial help, her life might look a lot different."When I got older I found this opportunity," Misner said. "I wanted to give back, so I gave back."In 2020, giving back looks a little different.For the past three decades, the Salvation Army has held large, family-style gatherings inside Golden Hall.But a gathering of that size is not allowed under California and San Diego County COVID-19 guidelines.So, a new idea."It's not inside at Golden Hall but outside with meals and kits to-go," said San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer who was volunteering with meal distribution.Just because it looks a little different doesn't mean the traditional meal needs to change.To-go kits included turkey and stuffing, mashed potatoes with gravy, green beans or corn, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie."It's not just about a meal today, but some of the help and services and support represents the best of our city," Faulconer said.On Thursday, the Salvation Army served meals at four different locations. 1437

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Documents show the man accused of pummeling a teenage Syrian refugee on a trolley car has a history of run-ins with authorities.On Oct. 15, Adrian Vergara was accused of the crime after approaching the teen and asking him if he's Mexican."He responded, no I am Arab. He does not speak a lot of English, and with that response the person began to pummel him in the face," Geneviéve Jones-Wright, Legal Director, Partnership for the Advancement of New Americans, said.Tuesday, San Diego Police said they had arrested Vergara on suspicion of assault with force and violation of civil rights.RELATED: Man accused of attacking Syrian refugee aboard trolley car arrested10News dug into Vergara's background and found a history of violent incidents. In 2012, court documents say Vergara threatened a man with a billy club. He did community service in the South Metro Career Center. A letter says he worked well there with special needs students as well as general students. A certificate also showed he completed a 12-hour anger management program in 2013 and was called an outstanding professional candidate.RELATED: Teen attacked on trolley in possible hate crimeIn 2015, a case was dismissed accusing Vergara of attacking another man. And in 2016, he was charged with grand theft and burglary for breaking into the Central Library.Later that year, documents say Vergara violated a restraining order against his ex-girlfriend, kicking her front door, texting her and in a phone call, cursing at her and saying, "if you don't talk to me I'm going to go to your job and cause a scene. I don't care about my life." Documents show he called her 20 times in 30 minutes.Court documents also show a carjacking charge at the beginning of 2017.In October 2017, Vergara was charged for beating up a man and given a stay away order from the MTS Imperial Transit Center.The most recent document shows he violated a court order, put in place to prevent domestic violence in January 2019. 1996
