SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Firefighting cameras are blanketing California, shattering its goal of installing 650 cameras across California by 2022, thanks to the efforts of a UC San Diego professor and his team.The camera system, called ALERTWildfire, came from a need to confirm the ignition of a fire, and coordinate assets to be the most efficient and safe for the community.Geology Professor Neal Driscoll at UC San Diego is the Co-Director of ALERTWildfire and said just a couple of years ago it was a slow process confirming a fire sparked in the county."We’d have to send an engine to a mountaintop or launch an aircraft to verify ignition," Driscoll said.That wasted valuable time. ALERTWildfire allows fire command centers to find and assess a blaze with a few clicks on a computer.Cal Fire Captain Thomas Shoots said they look for key information from the cameras, "really just trying to hone in on where this fire is, what its potential is and who might need to be evacuated."The system launched in 2017 and now San Diego has 35 cameras across the county.The cameras pan, tilt and zoom on command and have a time-lapse function."The technology isn’t just good situational awareness, it’s also using that data and that information in real-time to evacuate people and save some more lives," Shoots said.Driscoll said they are continuing to grow the program, "locally I think we’ll cap out at 45-50."Shoots said they're working to grow to more than 1,000 cameras across the state by 2022 and Driscoll hopes to expand to other states like Colorado and Idaho.Driscoll advises the public to get familiar with the website, so in case of an emergency, you can be aware of your surroundings and evacuate safely.Driscoll also advised the public to RAP: Reduce risk, Activate your alerts, and Practice your plan. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Governor Gavin Newsom is expected to sign a bill that would create a cap on annual rental increases. The bill passed both chambers of the California legislature this week. The bill would limit rent increases to 5% per year, plus the rate of inflation.It would also implement “just cause” protections, which require landlords to give specific reasons for evictions if tenants have lived in a unit for more than a year. 444

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Friends of Anthony Womack, the teenager who died after jumping from Sunset Cliffs Wednesday, spent the morning joining a local car club to wash cars in National City, in exchange for funeral donations."He was just like a happy person," said Sweetwater High School student, Sarah Seineke. "He was always around school laughing. "She came to us and she asked us if we could do something for her friend."The community showed up, car after car stopped by the church leaving cash and comforting the teens who have lost someone who meant so much."I hope they remember his vibe as a person," said Seineke. She has advanced causes of equality, justice, and empowerment on both sides of the border, serving on boards and committees in the U.S. aimed at advancing equlity and helping Mexico's legal system transition to oral advocacy.Ruth Goldschmiedova Sax: Sax is a survivor of three Nazi concentration camps and dedicated her life to speaking about her experiences and reminding everyone that hate is never the answer. Her life was chronicled in a biography by her daughter, Sandra Scheller, and won the Multicultural Motion Pictures Award for best documentary. Scheller will accept the award posthumously for her mother.Colleen O'Harra: O'Harra is the founding Executive Director of the Oceanside Women's Resource Center and has served the city for eight years as an Oceanside City Council members and two years as Deputy Mayor.Bridgit Wilson: Wilson is a veteran who has advocated for LGBT active duty and military veterans, working to repeal the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy and helping craft the Obama Administration's policy allowing transgender individuals to serve openly.Dorothy Smith: Smith served on the San Diego Unified School District Board of Education and was the first African American woman elected to public office in the county.
