SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 16-year-old boy with a remote-controlled car tried to send 50 packages of methamphetamine across the border, U.S. Border Patrol agents said Tuesday. Agents were guarding the U.S.-Mexico border Sunday at 12:30 a.m. when they saw a person with two duffel bags walking along the secondary border wall. One of the agents who responded to the scene saw the boy hiding in thick brush. He had a remote-controlled car and 55 pounds of meth, agents said. The boy was arrested and will face smuggling charges. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A discrimination lawsuit filed by a former high-ranking employee against UC San Diego has reached a settlement agreement.Jean Ford served as the Associate Vice Chancellor for UC San Diego Health Sciences Advancement. In June 2019, she sued the UC Regents and Chancellor Pradeep Khosla, alleging age and gender discrimination, as well as wrongful termination.Team 10 first reported the lawsuit in June 2019.Ford came to San Diego in 2015 after a decade at Columbia University Medical Center, according to a biography previously on the UC San Diego website.The lawsuit alleged that she was subjected to discrimination and harassment by Chancellor Kholsa because she was a woman over the age of 40, then retaliated against for complaining about illegal conduct. The complaint alleged that Kholsa promoted a younger and less experienced man to supervise Ford.“My client has been a successful fundraiser for 25 years,” said attorney Kristina Larsen last year. “She was recruited to UCSD… and UCSD Health had their most successful fundraising year of almost 0 million under Ms. Ford’s leadership.”The UC Regents recently approved the settlement agreement, although the terms were not disclosed.In a statement, Larsen told Team 10:“Former UCSD Assistant Vice Chancellor Jean Ford, The Regents of the University of California, and UCSD Chancellor Pradeep Khosla have amicably resolved the claims between the parties, with none of the three admitting any wrongdoing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 46-year-old Oak Park man is being held without bail in San Diego's Central Jail after San Diego Police say he kidnapped a toddler and molested her.Francisco "Freddy" Diaz faces 8 felony counts, including burglary, kidnapping sexual assault and lewd and lascivious acts on a child under the age of 14. His alleged victim is just three years old.The girl's father, Silvester Soltero told 10News he was working on his car when, unbeknownst to him, the "strange" man who lived next door broke into a bedroom window, grabbing his sleeping daughter.Soltero said Diaz' mother brought his daughter home, but she didn't have her pants. “I grabbed my daughter and I was like, baby what happened?" Soltero said his daughter proceeded to tell him the man touched her private parts. When the father asked who the man was. Soltero said his daughter pointed out Diaz."I lost it," said Soltero.When the father approached Diaz he became hostile. “He started screaming if you snitch on me I'll kill you," recalled Soltero.The men fought. Soltero showed a bruise where he said Diaz tried to poke him in the eye with a fork.Eventually, Diaz ran off, but San Diego Police caught him a short distance away.That's when Soltero said things got worse. He soon learned his neighbor was a registered sex offender.“They should have told me, they should have told me I was living next to a pedophile, If I had known I wouldn’t have brought my daughter around here, there’s no way in hell," he said.Court records show Diaz was convicted in 2006 for molesting three girls on the playground adjacent to Oak Park Elementary School, which is right across from his mother's house. He was sentenced to eight years in prison, in part because he already had a criminal history. In 2000, Diaz was convicted of making a terrorist threat and assault with a deadly weapon.Court records show Diaz is schizophrenic and abuses drugs, specifically methamphetamines. A psychologist is quoted in court documents saying, "If he can remain in treatment, and avoid drug and alcohol abuse, he should not pose a danger to the community's children."12 years later, Diaz finds himself back under the legal microscope.Soltero wants to know why a registered sex offender could live right across from a school full of potential victims, and right next door to the home where Soltero's daughter and three other children live.San Diego Police say Diaz was in full compliance with the terms of Megan's Law. He is required to check in with police every year and he does so, said Lt. Jason Weeden. Because Diaz' child molestation convictions were misdemeanors, he doesn't have to steer clear of schools and playgrounds.Silvester Soltero says if that's true, the law should be changed. “If you’re a sex offender you shouldn’t be by a school, period," he said.Diaz will be arraigned before a judge Wednesday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Security is tight at San Diego's mosques following an arson attack at a mosque in Escondido early Sunday morning. Someone set fire to the Islamic Center of Escondido on West Sixth Avenue around 3 a.m, but a handful of worshippers was inside, and the group put out the fire before it caused any significant damage. When police arrived, they found a message in graffiti referencing the recent shootings at mosques in New Zealand. Monday afternoon, two San Diego Police Department patrol cars sat in the parking lot of the Islamic Center of San Diego. Directors say worshipers are nervous. "They accept the faith of what happened, others are very, you know, worried as well. It's a mixed mood," said Khelil Ouznali, vice chair of the board of directors. The center already has surveillance cameras all over the property and guards on duty, but now the directors are considering hiring armed guards. "We are looking into improving security, you know, we are looking into different options based on the feedback from our community," said Ouznali. On the campus of San Diego State University Monday, dozens of students rallied against hate. They marched through the student union chanting, "No hate at state, Muslims are here to stay, no hate at state, Muslims are here to stay!" Faduma Mohamed is a member of the Muslim Student Association. "It just goes to show there's a lot of hate against us, but although some people can attempt to destroy Muslims, Islam itself the religion, cannot be destroyed," said Mohamed. The group posted pictures of the lives lost in the shooting rampages at the mosques in New Zealand and the attack at a Jewish Synagogue in Pittsburgh. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A global recruitment company tells 10News there is a concern that the healthcare system is going to be over-run by patients.It brings up questions whether San Diego County has enough nurses to staff hospitals and medical centers if the coronavirus pandemic goes on for an extended period."The problem that we're seeing now, post-pandemic and coronavirus, is that those nurses can't flock to any one area to support people because the problem is, they have to support locally where they are," said Jon Griffith with the recruitment company GQR. Griffith explained there were supply and demand issues with nurses before COVID-19. Now travel nurses, who would typically fill the void are needed in every state, and not necessarily available to travel."We're seeing people called out of retirement," he said. "Nurses and physicians alike being requested to come out and support. Essentially what we're trying to do at GQR is to tap into those resources or new grad nurses, retired nurses, wherever we can to give that local support to these hospitals to try and mitigate that risk."Griffith told 10News the hospitals they've spoken with are aware of potential challenges and are gearing up to make sure people have their healthcare needs met."They are heroes alright," Griffith said. "We see this all on social media. They are on the frontlines still giving great patient care and focusing on that continuity of care and that right there is what this is all about.
