ROME — Pope Francis has welcomed doctors and nurses from the coronavirus-ravaged region of Lombardy to the Vatican to thank them for their selfless work and “heroic” sacrifice. Francis dedicated one of his first post-lockdown audiences to Italy’s front-line medical personnel Saturday. He told the delegation that their example of professional competence and compassion would help Italy forge a new future of hope and solidarity. The northern region of Lombardy was the hardest-hit region in the onetime European epicenter of the pandemic. It has counted more than 92,000 of Italy’s 232,000 infections and half of Italy’s 34,500 dead. Francis also took a dig at some conservative priests who chafed at lockdown measures, calling their complaints “adolescent.” 766
REUNION, Fla. – The Los Angeles Lakers are this year’s NBA champions. The L.A. team defeated the Miami Heat 106-93 in Game 6 of the NBA Finals Sunday night, marking the team's 17th NBA title, tying the Boston Celtics for the record. This also marks LeBron James’ fourth NBA championship win. He previously won with the Heat in 2012 and 2013, as well as in 2016 with the Cleveland Cavaliers.Game 6 was also the 260th of James’ playoff career, lifting him into sole possession of first place on the league’s postseason appearances list. After missing the playoffs in his first two seasons, James has reached the postseason 14 times in 15 years. The 2019-2020 season was unlike any other before. First, it was suspended when the COVID-19 pandemic started in March. And then it resumed, with games played at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex near Orlando, Florida. 869
RICHMOND, Va. — A Virginia judge has dissolved one injunction but imposed another preventing Virginia's governor from removing an enormous statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. The new 90-day injunction bars the statue’s removal from Richmond's Monument Avenue while claims in a lawsuit filed by a group of property owners are litigated. Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring has moved to dismiss the case, but the judge says the property owners have standing and could succeed on at least one of their claims. Gov. Ralph Northam announced plans to remove the statue in early June, citing the pain felt across the country about the death of George Floyd. 667
Ron Bielanski is passionate about working with his hands. But COVID-19 threw a wrench at how he made his living as a construction worker.“My boss, at the time I just got hired, told me I can’t make you come here,” Ron Bielanski recalled. “It’s voluntary at this point.”After leaving his job in construction, Bielanski worked as a handyman. But soon, the opportunities dwindled. Prior to the pandemic, he received three to four job offers a week. Now, maybe four calls a month.“That has gone away completely. There is no one calling me for estimates,” Bielanski said. “The only phone calls I am getting are people in emergency situations.”This jack of all trades says clients are reluctant to hire repair experts because of the current pandemic and social distancing guidelines.Experts recommend the following for those seeking handiwork:Household members and service providers should wear masksLimit interaction with repair workersDisinfect the area that may have been touched during a projectHousehold members with health issues should leave while the project is being completed 1087
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- California health officials have reported the state's first coronavirus death of a child. The state Department of Public Health said Friday the victim was a teenager, had other health conditions and died in the Central Valley. No other details were released. The state's death toll surpassed 9,000 on Friday, and three-quarters were 65 and older.Only about 9% of California's half-million confirmed virus cases are children, and very few have suffered conditions serious enough for hospitalization.Scientists still aren't certain why children don't seem to be as seriously affected by the virus as adults. 637
