BEIJING, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said here Monday China hopes to work with Norway to boost bilateral economic and trade cooperation.Xi told visiting Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs Jonas Gahr Stoere he hopes the two countries will expand cooperation in areas such as shipping, fisheries, energy, environmental protection and the Arctic.Xi said as long as the two nations respect each other and especially respect each other's core interests and major concerns, China-Norway relations will develop in a healthy way.Stoere expressed appreciation for China's achievements in social and economic progress, saying that the Norwegian government will increase cooperation with China in politics, economics, culture, science and technology, energy and finance.Norway hopes to sign a free trade agreement with China, Stoere added.Chinese foreign minister Yang Jiechi held talks with Stoere earlier Monday.

FUZHOU, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- Tropical storm Lionrock, the eighth of this year, made landfall on east China's Fujian Province early Thursday morning, local meteorologists said.The storm landed at Gulei Town of Zhangpu County at around 6:50 a.m. with a speed of 82.8 km per hour near its center.Under the impact of Lionrock, torrential rain was seen along the coast of Zhangzhou City, and the rain was the heaviest in Dongshan and Zhangpu counties.No casualties have been reported.Local meteorologists have warned residents of mudflows and landslides that might be triggered by the tropical storm.The meteorologists forecast that rainfalls would be up to 100 to 200 mm in Zhangzhou, Quanzhou, Xiamen and Putian cities of Fujian from Thursday to Friday.By 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, 162,200 people in the province had been evacuated to safe places, and 50,703 fishing ships had been back to harbors.

HANOI, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- A trade fair was held in Vietnam's capital city of Hanoi on Saturday with participation of companies from Vietnam and China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.At the fair, more than 100 companies from China's Guangxi brought here nearly 200 projects in various sectors including resources development, agriculture products processing, agricultural machinery production, sugar production and high technology.Ma Biao, chairman of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region said at the fair that Guangxi and Vietnam have seen strengthened trade and economic links in recent years.Vietnam has been Guangxi's largest trade partner for eleven years, said Ma. SHANGHAI, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- China will continue to promote gradual exchange rate reforms, even while the yuan is expected to stabilize at a reasonable level, said Yi Gang, head of the State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE) Monday in Shanghai.Yi, also deputy governor of the People's Bank of China (PBOC), or the central bank, made the remarks at a seminar held by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to discuss the theme "Macro-Prudential Policies -- an Asian Perspective"."The flexibility of the yuan has increased since China launched exchange rate reforms in June. We will further boost those reforms, but the process will be gradual," Yi said."Judging from the markets, the yuan can remain stable at a reasonable and balanced level," he said.China will also continue to expand domestic demand and boost construction in rural medical services, education and infrastructure, he said.Five years ago, China abandoned a decade-old peg to the U.S. dollar and allowed its currency to fluctuate against a basket of currencies and appreciate by 2.1 percent.Since then, the yuan has strengthened further, albeit slowly, and has risen more than 21 percent against the greenback.On June 19 this year, the Chinese central bank announced that it would further reform the yuan's exchange rate mechanism to improve its flexibility.
