SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Kristin Elliott is CEO of Precision Engineering in Vista, a company that creates water quality sensors for oceans and lakes, "we sell these to universities around the world, work with Scripps Institution of Oceanography," Elliott described.Her work is her passion but so is her team, so when the pandemic hit she said it was her goal not to layoff any employees, taking a pay cut so her team could stay paid."We wanted to save our team through this," she said. Then, there was the announcement kids would be returning to school online."We have this space that we're not gonna be utilizing because no one's having in-person conferences, we're all over zoom these days," turning the room into a classroom. "It's large enough to fit 3 or 4 kids and that's exactly the number of kids we have with our employees. We're going to have a little reading area where kids can switch places to relax and reset. All the things you can normally find in a classroom, a bookshelf with all the interests they might have." Elliott even went to great lengths, hiring an accredited teacher's assistance to help."It's definitely a relief. I know they were just thinking about homeschooling and working, trying to manage that. There's so many emotions involved and so much anxiety and stress, and my goal was to reduce that for our employees."Elliott has followed all CDC protocols and guidelines for her 15 employees working in office, and she'll do the same when their kids come fall."We're still getting the room set up because we want to ensure social distancing between the children and the teacher. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Leaders from Mexico and San Diego led a conference on the effort to end human trafficking Tuesday at Liberty Station. Carlos Gonzalez Gutierrez, who recently took over as Mexico's Consul General in San Diego, was the first speaker, followed by San Diego District Attorney Summer Stephan.An estimate by the United Nations reveals that millions of people are living in modern day slavery worldwide. In San Diego, the most common form of human trafficking is for sexual exploitation. The District Attorney's office told 10News that between 3,000 and 7,000 women are sex trafficked through the county each year, with the average age of the victim's being just 16.RELATED: Two teens arrested in San Diego for possible sex trafficking of 12-year-old girl"We have to watch the borders, but we also have to watch in the privacy of the bedrooms of our kids," Stephan said during an interview with 10News.The forum came just a few days after 18 Camp Pendleton Marines and one Navy sailor were arrested, accused of taking part in human trafficking and drug smuggling from Mexico. At least one marine allegedly accepted a ,000 payment to transport undocumented immigrants after they made their way into the United States."It isn't surprising that they would use persons that would appear trustworthy like our military in order to transport either humans or drugs," Stephan said. 1395

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It's not often you hear about a bird being rescued from a tree. That's a task San Diego Fire-Rescue was up to in Mission Bay Thursday. Around 12:30 p.m. County Animal Services called for special service when they found an owl entangled in a tree. In a Facebook post SDFR wrote that the owl was caught in fishing line, leaving it suspended from the branches of the tree near 1775 E. Mission Bay Drive. The Engine 20 crew used a ladder to get to the bird and help set it free.  533

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It’s been nearly one year since the deadly University City poolside shooting. Kion Gould was hosting his 48th birthday party at his apartment complex. Right before the shooting began, Gould said he saw a man lying on a lounge chair by himself, so he invited him to join the festivities.That’s when the man, later identified as Peter Selis, pulled out his gun.The only thing Gould could do is raise his arm. His bone was miraculously able to stop the bullet.RELATED: Body camera footage captured during University City shooting released“I didn’t think it was a real threat until he basically raised the gun toward my head, that was the moment I realized I should have done something right before that, that’s the biggest thing that bothers me and bothers me to this day," said Gould.Police eventually shot and killed Selis after a shootout.
