SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - From searching for jobs online to interviewing virtually, even working online, the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way some people get and do their job."It definitely adds another element to do interviews online," said Alex McNair.McNair applied for her new job just as the pandemic hit.For everyone's safety, she and her prospective employer moved the interview from a traditional setting to a virtual one."Lytx was very forthcoming about health and safety and wanting to make sure everyone is taken care of," McNair said. "At that point, we transitioned online, and I think at that point it worked out really well for everyone."McNair got the job. She's a manager in customer support operations at Lytx, a fleet management solutions company. McNair now manages a team of people virtually."For me, of course, I want to see the office. I want to see where people sit, where they engage in a conference room, but for now working at a distance, I still get that culture and community," she said.McNair said she'll eventually transition back into the office, at some point, but not everyone will transition.Working remotely and communicating virtually will likely stick around for a while. At a recent San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) meeting, some business leaders signaled a willingness to adapt to a new standard - people working outside a traditional office."Remote working has been a great experiment, and there have been some incredible national studies," said Kevin Carroll, executive director of Tech San Diego, during a May SANDAG meeting. "Workers are not losing productivity - many workers will not return to regular 9-to-5 office jobs."According to CNN, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said as many as 50 percent of Facebook employees could be working remotely within the next five to 10 years. The online job site FlexJobs said it experienced a 7% growth in the number of its remote job listings in April 2020 over March 2020. The increase came in jobs such as customer service, sales, and marketing.McNair said if you're going to interview virtually, go with it and believe in yourself."You kind of just take one step forward, and you just keep moving forward and then it starts to sink in, this is moving forward in a positive direction," McNair said. 2299

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Friday, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that counties can reopen schools for in-person education when the county has been off the state's watch list for 14 consecutive days.Newsom said schools that don't meet that requirement would have to start the fall school year with distance learning.Though some of California's schools will make that grade for in-person classes this fall, Newsom outlined when schools may be required to go back to distance learning:Schools should consult public health officer first if a classroom needs to go home because of a positive caseA classroom goes to distance learning if there is a confirmed caseA school goes to distance learning if multiple classrooms have cases or more than 5% of a school is positiveA district goes to distance learning if 25% of a district's schools are closed within two weeks"Our students, teachers, staff, and certainly parents, we all prefer in-classroom instruction for all the obvious reasons, social and emotional foundationally. But only, only if it can be done safely," Newsom said. "And safety will ultimately make the determination of how we go about educating our kids as we go into the fall and we work our way through this pandemic."Newsom's announcement comes as the federal government pushes for states to fully reopen schools in the fall -- even as COVID-19 cases surge in most states. 1385

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hillcrest will soon be home to San Diego’s first rainbow crosswalk to represent the community’s role in LGBTQ+ history. The rainbow crosswalk, similar to those in cities like San Francisco and Seattle, will be located at Normal Street and University Avenue. “The installation of a rainbow crosswalk has been a long-standing goal of the San Diego LGBTQ+ community. Hillcrest deserves a visual representation of the LGBTQ+ movement and its goals of visibility, acceptance and inclusion,” said Councilmember Chris Ward’s office. A celebratory event called “Catwalk on the Crosswalk” will take place Jan. 11 at 1 p.m. The San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus and Women’s Chorus will perform and cupcakes will be provided by Babycakes. Following the event, a reception will be held at Hillcrest Brewing Company. Councilmember Ward, Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins, Assemblymember Todd Gloria, Mayor Kevin Faulconer, Council President Georgette Gómez, Councilmember Jennifer Campbell and Supervisor Nathan Fletcher are set to attend. 1056

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Details are beginning to emerge about the woman who was shot and killed inside a Church’s Chicken in the South Bay Wednesday night. Maribel Merino-Iba?ez, 28, was killed while working her shift at the Otay Mesa West restaurant. “I believe in God and I believe that one day justice will come his way and that won’t bring my daughter back, but I know that there will be justice for her,” said Emma Karla Merino, the victim’s mother.
