SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Nearly a week full of films by military veterans, focusing on a variety of topics is coming to San Diego this month.The GI Film Festival runs Sept. 24-29, bringing together a community of passionate filmmakers, the military veteran community, and those who support them to showcase works in cinema and educate and preserve the legacies of veterans.Festival organizers say their mission is to ensure that the stories of military veterans and their families are told and show future generations the triumphs and sacrifices they endure.The festival also works as a bridge, connection military and civilian populations together through cinema and mutual understanding. All of this works as a way to help veterans heals as well.Last year, the six-day film festival opened with a film starring George Takei, about a veteran who spent time in a Japanese-American internment camp, and also featured films by stars like actor Jeffrey Wright. This year, films focusing on the Afghanistan War, short documentaries, post-9/11, the Iraq War, and student and military veteran projects will be screened.Films will be screened at the Museum of Photographic Arts or UltraStar Cinemas at Hazard Center. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Police are investigating the death of a child at a Tierrasanta home Tuesday.San Diego Police responded to the 3100 Block of Minuteman St. just before 11 a.m. to reports of a four-month-old child not breathing. When paramedics arrived, they began CPR on the infant.First responders were not able to revive the child.Police do not suspect the death to be criminal in nature at this point. However, police said since they are still not sure what led to the baby's death, they are investigating.The child died in a home in a military housing neighborhood.  624

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Palomar College has placed its president on leave pending an investigation.The college district announced Wednesday that Superintendent and President Joi Lin Blake was placed on paid leave following a report warning of the college district's fiscal instability.“It is my request that we all respect the privacy of all parties at this time. According to the district in the report, the 2018-19 budget had a ,220,001 deficit.The report stated that the district's salary and benefits costs "continue to increase year after year at a rate greater than revenue growth."The college district "has a high probability of fiscal insolvency in the near future" at its current pace, the report warned. The report adds that in two years the district "will have consumed all reserves and will be forced to borrow .5 million from an external source to remain solvent."The district said placing Blake on leave was not as a disciplinary action but "as a precautionary measure to protect all parties." In a corrected statement, the Palomar Community College District Board of Trustees said Assistant Superintendent and Palomar Vice President Jack Kahnh has assumed administrative responsibility of the district. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Officials said Sunday due to changes in the availability of testing supplies, the county is focusing on priority groups for COVID-19 testing.Going forward, the county is focusing coronavirus testing efforts on priority groups, including those with symptoms. Other high-risk groups that the county is focused on testing include:Healthcare workers, first responders, other social service employees, and people in essential jobsOlder adultsPeople with chronic medical conditionsPeople living in a residential or group setting, such as a long-term care facility or shelterPeople exposed to infected individuals in places where COVID-19 risk is highThose with an existing test appointment will still be able to receive a test.Sunday, the county reported 558 new coronavirus cases, bringing the region's total to 19,929 cases. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One man was seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle while leaving a flower shop in Rolando.The 68-year-old man was walking northbound in an intersection in the 7000 block of El Cajon Blvd. at about 12:30 p.m. when he was hit be a Honda Fit traveling eastbound, San Diego Police said. The man was taken to a nearby hospital and treated for life-threatening injuries.The driver remained at the scene. Police do not suspect alcohol to be a factor.Witnesses at the scene told 10News the man had just purchased flowers from someone nearby before being hit.SDPD's traffic division was investigating the incident. 643
