CHICAGO – According to the USDA, the average head of lettuce travels 1,500 miles from harvest to plate. That transport leaves a heavy carbon footprint as flavors in the produce also begin to degrade. While many have looked to vertical farming as an Eco-friendly alternative, high costs have been a challenge.But inside a warehouse on Chicago’s south side, one entrepreneur hopes to unlock the secret to the future of farming.For the last three years Jake Counne, the founder and CEO of Backyard Fresh Farms, has been pilot testing vertical farming using the principles of manufacturing.“Being able to have the crop come to the farmer instead of the farmer going to the crop,” said Counne. “That translated into huge efficiencies because we can start treating this like a manufacturing process instead of a farming process.”It’s a high-tech approach – implementing artificial intelligence, cameras and robotics that help to yield leafy, organic greens of high quality, while reducing waste and the time it takes to harvest. Some have called it Old McDonald meets Henry Ford. Large pallets of vegetables are run down conveyor belts under LED lights.“The system will be cuing up trays to the harvester based on where the plants are in their life-cycle,” explains Counne.It’s the automation and assembly line he says that makes this vertical farming model unique. Artificial intelligence algorithms and cameras monitor the growth of the crops. Lead research and development scientist Jonathan Weekley explains how the cameras work. “They’re capturing live images, they’re doing live image analysis,” he said. “They’re also collecting energy use data so we can monitor how much energy our lights are using.”“So, what essentially happens is the plant itself is becoming the sensor that controls its own environment,” Counne added. Another factor that makes the process different is scaleability. Right now, Backyard Fresh Farms can grow 100 different varieties of vegetables with an eye on expansion.“There’s really no end to type of varieties we can grow and specifically in the leafy greens,” said Counne. “I mean flavors that explode in your mouth.”And it’s becoming big business. The global vertical farming market valued at .2 billion last year is projected to grow to nearly billion by 2026.Daniel Huebschmann, Corporate Executive Chef at Gibson’s Restaurant Group, says the quality of Backyard’s produce is of an extremely high quality. “We’ve talked about freshness, but the flavors are intense,” he says. “It’s just delivering an unbelievably sweet, tender product.”Counne says he has nine patents pending for the hardware and software system he and his team have developed in the 2,000 square foot space. But, he says the ultimate goal is to have the product make its way to grocery shelves nationwide. “The vision is really to build 100 square foot facilities near the major population centers to be able to provide amazing, delicious greens that were grown sustainably,” he said. If he succeeds where others have failed, his high-tech plan could get him a slice of the billion U.S. produce market. Dominican Republic authorities arrested an 11th suspect in the murder-for-hire plot against former Red Sox player David Ortiz as details emerge on who allegedly paid for the attempted hit.Police arrested the suspect Tuesday and their role and other information is expected to be discussed at a news conference scheduled for Wednesday, a local law enforcement source told CNN.A day before the arrest, CNN obtained Dominican court documents that identified the person accused of paying for the attempted hit as Alberto Miguel Rodriguez Mota.Rodriguez Mota was the latest suspect to be identified in what authorities have described as a "complex" assassination plot against the beloved former Boston slugger.Dominican prosecutors have said a fugitive suspect paid for the would-be assassins who shot Ortiz in a crowded bar in Santo Domingo last week.What we know about man who allegedly paid for the attempted hitPolice are searching for Rodriguez Mota, who faces attempted murder charges in the case.Rodriguez Mota met with another suspect, Gabriel Alexander Perez Vizcaíno, to discuss a plan one week before Ortiz was shot, according to the indictment.Perez Vizcaíno was the go-between for Rodriguez Mota and another suspect accused of helping orchestrate the hit from a Dominican prison, identified as Jose Eduardo Ciprián.According to court documents, Ciprián and fellow inmate Carlos Alvarez helped coordinate the shooting and distributed a ,800 payment to the "sicarios," or assassins.On the day of the shooting Ciprián is believed to have texted from his prison cell a photo of Ortiz to Perez Vizcaíno, who is also known as "El Hueso" or "The Bone," according to the court documents.Perez Vizcaíno then met with a "criminal group" at a gas station to show them the photo of the person they were to "liquidate," according to the indictment.On Monday, Perez Vizcaíno was given a year of pre-trial detention at a court hearing, according to Jose Hoopelman, an attorney for David Ortiz.It is not clear why Rodriguez Mota would have paid nearly ,000 to kill Ortiz or if he was acting on someone else's behalf.How the shooting unfoldedOrtiz was on a crowded bar patio in Santo Domingo the night of June 9 when a gunman walked in, pulled out a Browning Hi-Power 9mm and shot him once in the lower back.The bullet passed through Ortiz, perforating his intestines and internal organs and hit his friend, TV talk show host Jhoel Lopez, in the leg. With rigging it allows animators to move characters’ body parts more freely and make them more realistic.Another part of the pipeline is simulation. “In ‘Brave,’ Merida’s hair took a lot of work in order to make it look realistic, having it looking springy but not so unrealistic that it did weird things when they animated it.”Lighting is also a big part. It creates mood and determines day or night. However, in the movie “Finding Nemo,” different lighting colors like yellow were used to make the fish appear to be swimming closer to the surface. Using dark blue makes it look like deep water.Then, there is rendering.
