KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A bill passed by the Missouri House would allow school districts to offer Bible study as an elective class. The bill, HB 267, would allow schools to teach the Bible from a historic perspective. The Bible history class could then be offered as an elective class at public high schools. The bill passed the House and is now in the state Senate. The lawmaker who proposed the law, Rep. Ben Baker (R-Neosho), is from southwest Missouri and works for a religious-affiliated college. If approved by the Senate and governor, a social studies teacher would teach the course. It would be up to individual school districts to offer the class as an elective. The current law allows for books like the Bible to be used as a reference in the classroom. This proposal would make the class solely about the Bible.“I think it is a really bad idea,” said Chase Peeples, the pastor at Kansas City United Church of Christ. “If it is my kid, who is teaching about the Bible and what perspective are they coming from? Why aren’t other sacred texts like the Quran or the Hindu text, Buddhist text? Which type of Christian is going to teach what interpretation of the Bible?”“If it is a subject matter that is offering education about an important piece of literature, it should not be prohibited,” Stephen Shields said.“Public schools should not be focused on religious education, I think there are basics a student should be learning in public school and religion is not one of them,” Bill Carriger said. 1510
It started out as a limp.At the time, father Shawn Cress thought daughter Chloe, then 12 years old, just needed some physical therapy. That was June 2018.But the limp turned into a fever, which led to lab tests at the doctor's office that "didn't look good," Shawn recalls. And by then, Chloe was having back pain. All this for the Kingsport, Tennessee family turned into a referral to Niswonger Children's Hospital in Johnson City, about 34 miles away, where doctors gave Chloe a CT scan. That's how they found the mass -- a giant tumor near Chloe's heart that had spread down to her esophagus and into some of her vertebrae, causing the back pain.It was 667

In a series of emotional interviews on Tuesday, George Floyd's daughter and her mother remembered Floyd as a "good man" and "super fun dad."Roxy Washington, the mother of Floyd's 6-year-old daughter Gianna, told reporters that she hopes the officers who arrested him face consequences for Floyd's death."This is what those officers took from me," Washington said through tears. "At the end of the day, they get to go home and be with their families. Gianna does not have a father. He will never see her grow up, graduate. He will never walk her down the aisle. If she has a problem and needs her dad, she does not have that anymore."Washington added that even though she and Floyd and their "ups and downs," she still considered him a good person."I'm here for my baby, and I miss George because I want justice for him. I want justice for him because he was good. No matter what anybody says, he was a good man. And this is the proof that he was good," Washington said.In a later interview, Washington described talking to Gianna and telling her how her father had died. She said she wasn't planning on revealing everything about her father's death, but Gianna overheard TV coverage."She said, 'Mom, something is going on with my family.' I said, 'why do you say that?' And she said, 'because I hear them saying my daddy's name on TV," Washington said. "She wanted to know how he died. And the only thing that I can tell is he couldn't breathe."Gianna described her father to reporters as a "super fun dad" who often carried her on his back.A video of Gianna taken on Tuesday, which was later shared on Twitter by Bernice King, the daughter of Martin Luther King, Jr., Gianna said that her father "changed the world." 1731
I'm sorry for the inappropriate remarks and am glad to see they have been promptly edited out. I hope this is the first and last time an episode of #NWAPowerrr is overshadowed by something like this. Illinois is now the 11th state in the United States to legalize the purchase and possession of recreational marijuana.Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker signed a bill Tuesday that allows adults 21 and over in the state to buy and possess small amounts of the drug.Adults will be able to purchase and possess 30 grams of cannabis, five grams of cannabis concentrate, and cannbis-infused products containing no more than 500 milligrams of THC. Nonresidents will be able to purchase half of each of those amounts.Under the law, medical patients would be permitted to buy marijuana seeds and grow up to five plants at home, so long as the plants are kept out of public view.Employers can still enforce a zero-tolerance or drug free workplace. The 747
