MIDDLETON, Idaho — Fourteen staff members at Heights Elementary in Idaho have been placed on administrative leave after dressing up for Halloween in costumes many parents and locals are calling "offensive" and "racist."The teachers and other staff came under fire for dressing as a border wall and group of Mexicans on Halloween last week."They should have some kind of sensitivity training — some kind of interaction with other cultures because this — this is what they are passing on to the kids. So it's normalizing — for them — that these kinds of things are acceptable, when, in my opinion, they are not," said Kevin Vallejo, Boise resident.Middleton School District has now announced it is doing just that. Administrators said there will be an all-district staff meeting for cultural sensitivity training on Nov. 7. Officials said these kinds of training "will continue throughout this school year and at the start of each school year moving forward," according to the administration's release.The decision was announced Saturday at a special school board meeting where the announcement was made and then the school board went into executive session. The superintendent did not disclose the names of the employees involved.In response to the controversy, Mark Hopkins has been named principal at Heights Elementary “for now,” Middleton said. Hopkins began the year as principal of Purple Sage Elementary, according to Idaho Ed News. Board members participated in a nearly two-hour executive session before returning to open session and reading a statement condemning the employees’ actions.Photos of the employees posing in their costumes were originally posted on the school district's Facebook page and then later removed. The entire district's Facebook page has since been taken down."A patron reached out to me and was disturbed by the photos and then he shared those with me and I was equally, I was disappointed and I saw some inappropriate and insensitive costumes," Dr. Josh Middleton, superintendent, Middleton School District said Friday. Friday, the superintendent said the costumes were part of a curriculum unit on character, respect and kindness. Superintendent Josh Middleton said this is a learning opportunity for the district and other schools.  2332

Mexico is bracing for what's expected to be one of the strongest storms ever to hit its Pacific coast.Hurricane Willa is aimed at the coast's center, where it is forecast to hit Tuesday afternoon or evening. Tuesday morning, the storm was hurling maximum sustained winds of 130 mph and threatening to bring life-threatening storm surge and torrents of rain ashore,according to the National Hurricane Center.The storm weakened slightly to a Category 4 hurricane on Monday, with winds dropping further early Tuesday. Willa formed Saturday and went from tropical storm to Category 5 hurricane in just two days -- the pinnacle of what the hurricane center called "explosive" strengthening. Over the 24 hours from Sunday morning to Monday morning, Willa swelled by 80 mph.The whirlwind growth was only slightly marred by Monday's slowdown. "Willa is an extremely dangerous category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. While gradual weakening is forecast today (Tuesday), Willa is expected to be a dangerous major hurricane when it reaches the coast of Mexico," the National Hurricane Center said.Storm surge accompanied by "large and destructive waves" are forecast along portions of Mexico's central and southwestern coast. Rainfall ranging from 6 to 12 inches could spawn life-threatening landslides and flash flooding in portions of the Mexican states of Jalisco, Nayarit and Sinaloa.Willa has been a danger for forecasters as well. An aircraft with the Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunters was forced to turn around Monday over concerns for its onboard equipment after getting blasted by a bolt of lightning from one of Willa's outer rain bands, according to the National Hurricane Center.In a tweet Monday, Mexican President Enrique Pe?a Nieto said he has asked the National System of Civil Protection to take all steps necessary to protect those in Hurricane Willa's path, as well as those impacted by Tropical Storm Vicente, a weaker system tracking south of Willa that's also primed to make landfall Tuesday. Vicente is expected to be a tropical depression by the time it comes ashore, the National Hurricane Center said.Airlines have started moving out of Willa's path. Southwest has canceled all of its flights at the International Airport in Puerto Vallarta, a resort city in Mexico's Jalisco state. American Airlines has canceled its flights in the city of Mazatlan about 275 miles north of that.Willa is on track to be one of the strongest hurricanes to ever hit the Pacific coast of Mexico, and its landfall will come three years to the day after the strongest, Category 5 Hurricane Patricia, made landfall in Jalisco.The back-to-back systems of Willa and Vicente have helped make the 2018 hurricane season in the northeast Pacific one for the record books.The season is now the most active hurricane season on record using a measurement called "Accumulated Cyclone Energy," which combines the number of storms and their intensity through their lifetimes to give an overall measurement of tropical activity in a given region.There have been 10 major hurricanes in 2018, including Willa, which ties 1992 as the most major hurricanes seen in the northeast Pacific in one year.Increasing numbers of major hurricanes, along with a greater propensity of storms to undergo "rapid intensification" are expected consequences of?warmer ocean waters resulting from climate change. McDonald's hopes new breakfast items will draw more customers to the golden arches.The company announced Tuesday that it would expand its breakfast menu. The new items, along with local deals and low prices, should help "win back customers at breakfast," said CFO Kevin Ozan during a call with analysts.With the new items, McDonald's is aiming to reverse a troubling trend: American customers are eating elsewhere.Sales in the United States grew by 2.4% in the third quarter, but that was mostly because people spent more. The number of American customers declined.Over the past couple of years, McDonald's (MCD) has tried a number of different strategies to boost its US business. It put self-order kiosks in restaurants. It added new menu items. And McDonald's added delivery.That helped boost sales among existing customers. But those initiatives, part of a massive effort to modernize its US restaurants, haven't helped McDonald's hold on to existing customers or bring in new ones.The company believes a revamped breakfast menu could help."It's very competitive out there at breakfast," said CEO Stephen Easterbrook. "We're still losing a little share ... it continues to be a battleground," he said. "We want to do better at breakfast."McDonald's didn't offer details on what the new items will be.In recent years, Taco Bell has found success with its breakfast offerings. LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The Kentucky attorney general's office says two long-rifle shell casings were found in and near Breonna Taylor's apartment after a police drug raid that left her dead. It's the first time these specific shell casings have been mentioned by authorities investigating Taylor's death in March. One was found inside and the other outside Taylor's apartment. The notice of the two shell casings was filed in former Officer Brett Hankison's wanton endangerment case. According to the Associated Press, the one-page court filing does not say why the shell casings would be favorable to Hankison’s defense.Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron didn't mention the long-rifle casings at a September news conference announcing the indictment against Hankison, the AP reported.Another officer at Taylor's apartment that night was Sgt. Jonathan Mattingly. On Friday, Mattingly filed a counterclaim suit against Taylor's boyfriend, who previously had sued the police department. MALIBU, California — The devastating Woolsey Fire destroyed homes in Malibu on Friday including one belonging to Caitlyn Jenner.By Friday afternoon, 14,000 acres burned, along with multiple homes, fire officials reported. Another 30,000 homes were threatened in Ventura County.Caitlyn Jenner's home was featured on her reality show "I Am Cait", according to KABC.
