SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dozens of women gun owners joined in solidarity Friday for the launch of #NotMeSD.It was created by San Diego County Gun Owners (SDCGO), a political action committee promoting Second Amendment rights.The initiative aims to empower women with knowledge and choice. The group believes one way to prevent domestic violence and sexual assault is with guns. “We will stand beside you, we will help you, and if you want to look at owning a gun or just coming out shooting at the range to just feel some empowerment, we're willing to stand right next to you and say how can we help?" said Jill Barto, a SDCGO member.At the gathering, Barto shared her traumatic story of being sexually assaulted. "It’s still kind of emotional, but at age 14 I was raped, I was date raped by a boyfriend, it really took a toll on me. I ended up getting pregnant from the rape, and I had my child and raised him, he’s now 37-years-old," said Barto. She was lucky to find a strong support group, one of them today being SDCGO.“It gave me a voice, it gave me a voice to say this is what happened to me and I’m not going to be ashamed of it.”The group has a three-step approach for women considering gun ownership:Get free advice about firearms from women gun owners in SDCGOGet referrals to gun shops for discounts and receive help filling out paperworkReceive help applying for a concealed carry weapon permit“It doesn’t mean they're going to buy a gun, it doesn’t mean they’re going be CCW holders, but that’s their choice, and we’re here to support them on their choice," said Barto.However, some believe guns involved in domestic violence situations do more harm than good.Carol Landale is with San Diegans for Gun Violence Prevention. She supports a woman's right to arm herself but has concerns with the #NotMeSD message."The statistics show that when there is a gun in the home women are five times more likely to be killed with that gun, especially in domestic violence situations," said Landale. She says if a woman is going to purchase a gun, they must be extremely careful with how they store it. She also believes a lot of training is necessary to be proficient, especially in a high-stress situation.“If you’re going to be using a firearm you need to be practicing all the time. The police practice all the time, the military practices all the time, for somebody just to have a gun stored in a bedside table, who may have shot it once at a firing range, it doesn't seem like a sensible way to be able to protect yourself."Landale believes the decision to purchase a gun and use it, can have consequences.“I think the most important thing is to recognize that responsibility and to make sure you’re going to be willing to use a deadly weapon to kill somebody, that’s huge," said Landale. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Former San Diego deputy Richard Fischer has been released from jail months after being sentenced to nearly four years in jail after pleading guilty to multiple assault charges. According to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, Fischer was released earlier in May on custody credits. "On May 15, 2020 the San Diego County Sheriff's Department received an order from the Superior Court setting forth the custody credits for Richard Fischer," the department said. Fischer was sentenced to 44 months in jail in December of 2019, followed by 16 months of post-release supervision after pleading guilty to four felony counts of assault under the color of authority, two misdemeanor counts of assault under the color of authority, and one misdemeanor count of false imprisonment. The charges stemmed from attacks on 16 women, City News Service previously reported. Fischer was accused of assaulting women while on duty between 2015 and 2017. The victims said Fischer groped, hugged or tried to kiss them. Fischer originally faced 20 felony and misdemeanor charges. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Detainees inside the Otay Mesa Detention Center can reportedly no longer make phone calls to certain immigrants' rights activists. “Quite frankly, I'm outraged that a U.S. federal agency (ICE) would cut off communication,” said Alex Mensing with Pueblo Sin Fronteras. Mensing told ABC10 News on Tuesday that his number was blocked along with numbers to another immigrants’ rights activist group, Otay Mesa Detention Resistance.“Last time I checked, in the United States we're not supposed to censor people's ability to denounce abuses, to denounce medical negligence, to denounce physical assault by guards…by private prison guards or ICE officers against the people,” he added.The Otay Mesa Detention Center has come under fire in recent months for allegations of poor health conditions and abuses inside, as hundreds of people being housed there were testing positive for COVID-19.In May, Salvadoran Carlos Escobar-Mejia became the first detainee in U.S. custody to die after testing positive for the virus. His funeral was held last week.ICE contractor CoreCivic operates the facility.When asked Tuesday about blocking calls, CoreCivic replied, “We took this action at the direction of our government partner. We encourage you to reach out to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for more information on their rationale for this decision.”On Tuesday, a spokesperson for ICE sent ABC10 News the following statement:“Due to safety concerns for all detainees in custody, ICE has temporarily blocked detainee calls at Otay Mesa Detention Center to a specific San Diego area phone number after detainee calls to this number resulted in detainees exhibiting highly disruptive behavior, threatening the health and security of other detainees and employees at the facility. ICE takes very seriously the safety and well-being of those in our care and will take all necessary steps in order to ensure the continued safety of both detainees and staff. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- High surf is creating dangerous conditions for swimmers hitting the beach throughout San Diego County. A High Surf Advisory is in effect San Diego coastal cities from Monday morning at 8 A.M. until Tuesday night at 10 P.M.Just before 10 A.M. Monday, SDFD Lifeguards shut down the Ocean Beach Pier.They are also cautioning any swimmers and surfers who are not advanced to stay out of the water until the advisory expires.Many advanced surfers tell 10News they have been looking forward to this day for a long time. Those who hit the water Monday took advantage of the seven to 11 foot waves along the coast, saying it’s not just the swell and the direction but the time between the waves and the decreased winds that make for great surf conditions. "The quality and the length its just a great day a great day for everybody,” one surfer tells 10 News.One group of surfers found out first-hand how dangerous these conditions are. They were taking a boat to surf off of Point Loma when the waves flipped in Monday afternoon. The surfers escaped without injury, but the boat had to be towed back to shore. 1130
