BEIJING, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- China's meteorological authority announced on Monday that it has received 7.5 million yuan from the country's Ministry of Finance to strengthen its efforts in fighting persistent drought in some regions.The fund would be used to support efforts by meteorological departments in Shanxi, Hebei, Anhui, Shandong, and Henan provinces, all major crop-producing regions, to conduct activities for seeding clouds and making artificial rain, according to a statement posted on the National Meteorological Administration website.Government data shows that a prolonged drought since last October had affected 108.24 million mu (7.22 million hectares) of wheat crops in those provinces, as well as Jiangsu, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces, as of Sunday.The statement added that some of the affected regions experienced two rounds of snowfall last week, which were helpful in alleviating the drought. However, the major wheat-growing provinces of Shandong and Henan recorded no rainfall.The country's meteorological authority also predicted no significant rainfall or heavy snowfall for the dry regions over the next three days. NEW YORK, April 13 (Xinhua) -- New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and former U.S. President Bill Clinton announced on Wednesday the merger of their environmental groups, hoping to make it the most prominent climate policy organization in the world.The new organization would combine C40, a coalition of international cities run by Bloomberg, and the Clinton Climate Initiative, a project of Clinton' s philanthropic foundation, into a single organization, which will focus on population-rich cities to address global warming."I am elated by this. I think we really have a chance to make a difference," said Bill Clinton during a press conference at Gracie Mansion, adding that "together we are proving it is possible to create jobs and grow economies through reduced emissions."C40 and the Clinton Climate Initiative both seek to cut carbon emissions through programs that reduce energy use in buildings, promote mass transit and reuse greenhouse gases emitted by landfills.The newly combined organization is said to have a budget of about 15 million U.S. dollars. MEXICO CITY, May 18 (Xinhua) -- The Mexican government signed an agreement with the non-governmental group TRAFFIC on Tuesday to exchange information about illegal seizures of flora and fauna species in Mexico.The agreement with the wildlife trade monitoring network also called for the Mexican government to provide information on the routes used to transport such organic materials.The agreement was signed on the sideline of the 16th meeting of the Trilateral Committee for Wildlife and Ecosystem Conservation Management in the city of Oaxaca, south Mexico. Representatives of Canada, the United States and Mexico also attended the meeting.Among the list of 20,000 animals, vegetation and insects that TRAFFIC considers to be threatened by illegal trafficking worldwide, 2,500 of the organisms have their origins in Mexico. This amounts to 12 percent of the species most subject to buying, selling and transporting in the black market and threatens the survival of various ecosystems.The Mexican species that are listed among the most threatened by illegal trafficking are the cactus, orchids, reptiles, maguey plants, ferns, amphibians and fish.

CANBERRA, April 1 (Xinhua) -- People who share bongs to smoke marijuana may be at risk of contracting pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) , Australian medical researchers warned on Friday.Dr Michael Hayes and Dr Susan Miles from Calvary Mater Hospital in Newcastle of Australia conducted the research, which centered on three recent TB cases in New South Wales.TB is caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which can be contracted by breathing in air droplets coughed from an infected person.The research suggested a link between active TB cases and shared bongs, which is the water pipes commonly used in marijuana smoking.According to Dr Hayes, the three young patients were regular or heavy cannabis users, and more recently there has been a fourth person in the region with similar characteristics had been diagnosed with TB.He said although the three initial cases were not related, there was concern about the high rate of positive contacts among people who had shared bongs with the active cases."Smoking marijuana is a cough-provoking activity and it is usually conducted in a confined environment that is conducive to the spread of the organism," he told Australia Associated Press.

WASHINGTON, April 11 (Xinhua) -- Taking a statin before having major elective surgery reduces potentially serious kidney complications, according to a study appearing in an upcoming issue of the Journal of the American Society Nephrology.Each year, more than 230 million major elective surgeries are performed around the world. Unfortunately, many patients who undergo major operations develop kidney injury soon after surgery, often due to decreased blood flow to the kidneys and/or the effects of inflammation.Animal studies suggest that the cholesterol-lowering drugs called statins protect the kidneys from such damage, but whether a similar benefit occurs in humans is uncertain. To investigate, Amber Molnar, University of Western Ontario, and colleagues conducted a population-based retrospective study of all older patients who underwent major elective surgery in the province of Ontario, Canada from 1995 to 2008. Surgeries included cardiac, thoracic, vascular, intra-abdominal, and retroperitoneal procedures.A total of 213,347 patients from 211 hospitals underwent major elective surgery, and 4,020 patients (1.9 percent) developed postoperative kidney injury within two weeks of surgery. A total of 1,173 patients (0.5 percent) required dialysis within two weeks of surgery, and 5,974 patients (2.8 percent) died within a month of surgery.Prior to surgery, 67,941 patients (32 percent) were taking a statin. Patients taking a statin were 20 percent less likely to develop kidney injury, need dialysis, and die compared to patients who were not taking a statin. Also, there was evidence of a dose-effect, with patients on higher potency statins having less kidney injury. In addition, statins were beneficial whether they were started greater than 90 days or less than 30 days prior to surgery."Our study suggests that statin use in older persons results in less kidney injury following major elective surgery and reduces the risk of premature death after surgery," said Molnar, adding that the results warrant further investigation with more rigorous studies, but such trials will be difficult to carry out.
