SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A new interactive facility is teaching students the importance of water in our environment. Doors to the "Hydro Station" opened Thursday morning in Chula Vista.School leaders say this is a new way to get kids excited about learning about jobs in the water industry. The Hydro Station will host learning exhibits and hands-on activities to introduce students to the ecological cycle of water, water conservation, water quality, and more. "Human beings need water," says Matt Tessier with the Chula Vista Elementary School District. "We need water to survive. That's one of the things that kids really understand."Four thousand five hundred kids will get the chance to experience the Hydro Station annually. Its located at the Sweetwater Authority's Groundwater Desalination Facility. The Hydro Station is made possible through a partnership between the Sweetwater Authority, Chula Vista Elementary School District and Otay Mesa Water District. There will be an official ribbon-cutting for the learning space this evening at 5 p.m. 1070

San Diego (KGTV)- After a second vote, a marijuana production facility is given the green light to move forward. Dozens of people, on both sides of the issue, were there as city leaders made their decision. Planning commissioners voted 4 to 2, giving business leaders the conditional use permit they needed to move ahead with plans. “We’re elated that the decision was in our favor,” says Jared Angell, CFO of THinC. “We followed all the rules and regulations and were glad to see that the planning commission could uphold that.”Business leaders were hoping for this decision after a deadlock vote of 3 to 3 last week. The over 21,000 square feet building on Ruffner Road will be used for the marijuana production site. During today’s vote, some planning commissioners asked that the building, moving forward, be more transparent by adding more windows. Commissioners also requested storage items be housed on the top level. Community members were concerned about the safety and future of their neighborhood, but business leaders say ThinC is committed to working with everyone.“We reached out to a lot of local business and community members, and we’ve been working with them to ensure that our business will not negatively affect them in any way,” says Angell. “It sends a strong message about the strength of community,” says community member Ping Wang. “I would be overjoyed for our community coming together, banning together, and supporting each other.”The site will be used for manufacturing and distributing marijuana products. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris projected to take the White House, Harris will have to resign her seat in the U.S. Senate.The power to fill that seat would fall to Governor Gavin Newsom, and the political jockeying for his pick is well underway.“This is one of the best jobs in American politics, one of the most prominent jobs in American politics and every California political leader wants it,” said UC San Diego political science chair Thad Kousser.Kousser expects Newsom will want to make history with the diversity of his pick, should he have the opportunity.Others are thinking along the same lines. Groups like Equality California have sent the governor a list of their preferred LGBTQ candidates, which would be a first for California.Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez tweeted out her own list Friday of Latino candidates, another potential first for the state.“We are the largest demographic in this state, and growing,” she wrote. “It’s time we have a Latino/a US Senator.”Political analyst Laura Fink says the governor is going to have to balance a lot of competing interests.“First and foremost, what's going to be best for California? And then of course, what's going to be best for Governor Newsom moving forward as he looks toward his political ambitions,” Fink said, referring to the possibility that Newsom could run for president.There have been dozens of names floated as potential picks, including California Secretary of State Alex Padilla and state Attorney General Xavier Becerra.Both are sons of Mexican immigrants who would be the first Latino senators in California history.But don’t pencil either in just yet, according to Fink.“Kamala Harris is leaving one of only 26 women in the Senate. That's one out of four. Last time I checked, [women] are north of 50 percent of the population. So that is something that will need to come into consideration,” she said.Rep. This would be another first for her should she ascend to that seat.”Atkins declined to say if she was interested in the job or being vetted.“Right now, my focus is on the work before us, and the path ahead of us," she said in a statement to ABC 10News.Atikins said she was “focused on the outcome of the election and our state Senate races, looking forward to a Biden/Harris administration, and continuing our work here in California.”The power to fill a vacant U.S. Senate seat comes from the 17th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Nine states allow the governor to appoint a replacement, but require a special election shortly after.The remaining 36 states, including California, allow governors to appoint a replacement to serve out the remainder of the term.Newsom’s pick would serve out the remaining two years on Harris’s term, then go up for reelection in 2022 as an incumbent. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Video posted on social media shows a vehicle narrowly missing a pedestrian and slamming into a car in Pacific Beach. Dennys Morales says the incident happened just after 4:30 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of Riviera Drive and Graham Street. Video shows the car making a turn before nearly hitting a woman walking in the street. The footage then shows the driver slamming into Morales' parked car. RELATED: Driver hits pedestrian, flips car in Pacific BeachThe good news is, Morales says the suspect came forward Tuesday morning, sending him a message on Facebook to confess. Morales tells 10News the man said his back tire was low, claiming he swerved to avoid hitting the pedestrian, instead hitting the parked car. A police report has also been made. “This person needs to be held accountable,” Morales said.
