It’s harvest time for the wine industry on California’s Central Coast.At Wolff Vineyards in Edna Valley, owner Jean-Pierre Wolff is dealing with all kinds of issues.“Today in my vineyard, it’s over 100 degrees,” he said. “The impacts of the fires and the smoke taint really add another level of challenge.”These environmental challenges are now costing Wolff financially. Some customers canceled their orders because of concerns about nearby wildfires impacting his grapes.“Negative effects can manifest themselves later on after fermentation and during barrel aging,” Wolff said. “So, they basically backed out of agreements.”Millions of acres have recently burned across California, Oregon and Washington, areas that produce 85% of the country’s wine.“It’s the first time in recent history that fires have impacted so many different wine grape growing regions,” said Anita Oberholster, Ph.D. with the University of California, Davis Department of Viticulture and Enology.She says America’s wine tourism is already struggling due to COVID-19 and that these fires could cost the industry even more through job loss and damaged products.“The problem with this year is the fires started much earlier than our harvest season,” Oberholster said. “About 10% of the grapes have been harvested and the rest were still on the vine. 2020 is not our year.”For many wineries, smoke taint of grapes is so severe, there might not be a 2020 vintage.“The 2020 vintage is going to be one where we’ll have a limited amount of high-quality wines,” Wolff said.While Wolff is working to keep his products from going down the drain and letting his wine go to waste, he says many in the industry are dealing with fire fatigue and that an increase in cost linked to these fires could be felt in years to come.“2023 probably particularly with reds is when impacts will be felt,” he said. “We’ll bounce back, but we’ll be a little black and blue.” 1930

It was just a few days before Thanksgiving, when an 8th grader was shot and killed in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.Sandra Parks was sitting in her room watching TV, when a stray bullet came through the window.“She said, ‘Mama, call the police. I been shot,’” Sandra’s mother, Bernice, describes of that night. “She was laying on the floor. I thought she was playing, but I called the police anyway because I’m like that’s too many gunshots, what the hell is going on?”The 13-year-old’s award-winning essay is now being shared around the world and read on national news outlets. In the young girl’s essay, “Our Truth,” Sandra wrote about gun violence.Sandra’s words are now some of the only things her mom says she has left of her daughter.“I don’t have her flesh. I don’t have her smiling at me all the time. I don’t have what I want, and I want my baby,” Bernice says. “Ain’t nothing gonna make that better. It’s just that being in this house, since she been gone, it’s strange, scary, and it’s unacceptable.”Bernice says her daughter’s words are giving her strength as she prepares for the funeral. The mother hopes Sandra’s essay might prevent another family from going through the same pain.“The stuff that she wrote, people should listen to it. Heed to it. Follow it, because it’s only right that kids should live. Adults should live,” she says. “I don’t think nobody should die, not by the hands of body else for no apparent reason. She didn’t do nothing.”Police have arrested two suspects they believe were connected to the shooting.A public visitation for Sandra will be held Friday. 1596

In yet another distressing milestone amid the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 1 million people globally have now died of the virus, according to a database kept by Johns Hopkins.The planet passed the milestone Monday, about nine months after the new disease was first identified in Wuhan, China.Around the world, more than 33 million people are confirmed to have contracted the virus. The planet reached the 1 million deaths threshold just days after the United States recorded its 200,000th death linked to the virus — a rate that continues to lead the world. The U.S. also leads all other countries with more than 7 million confirmed cases of COVID-19.With 142,000 fatalities, Brazil is the only other country with more than 100,000 COVID-19 deaths. Other countries with high death tolls include India (about 96,000), Mexico (76,077) and the United Kingdom (42,077).The U.S., India (about 6 million), Brazil (about 5 million) and Russia (about 1 million) lead the world with the most confirmed cases of the virus.Worldwide, COVID-19 is spreading at the highest rates since the pandemic began. On Thursday alone, about 361,000 people were confirmed to have contracted the virus — by far the most daily confirmed cases on record.Deaths have largely held consistent since the summer months.Public health officials urge people around the world to continue to wear masks, avoid crowds, stay six feet apart from others and opt for outdoor activities over indoor activities ahead of the winter months. INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — This year has been especially hard on local musicians, who typically rely on gigs in restaurants and clubs to make ends meet. But for the past nine months the pandemic has kept that from happening.Everybody is taking a financial hit this year whether it's a music venue, music artist, even people on the audio/video side of things," said Jake Huber.Before the pandemic, local film maker Jake Huber and live venue owner Mike Angel launched the web TV series called 'Music in Transit' a way to highlight the Circle City's musicians as they perform live shows on IndyGo buses and bus stops."It's really that simple. We put bands on a bus and when it allows for it an audience too," said Angel.Season one was all about surprising new audiences. "You stop in your own tracks and you're like oh, what is this I'm experiencing right now? After a while every single act we had formed a crowd, and through that many acts have reached out to us saying thank you because I've gained a new audience. I've had people buy our record, just from these videos," Huber said.Season Two of Music in Transit will look a bit different. The mobile shows are socially distanced this time around, with a limited crowd. Huber and Angel are hoping season two will allow the world to still see Indianapolis musicians of multiple genre's, who, thanks to pandemic restrictions, could use all the exposure they can get."Hip hop, old country, indie rock, funk. Everything really.
