ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - Escondido firefighters engineered a makeshift sling to save a horse stuck at the bottom of a ravine Thursday. The fire department got a call about the horse stuck near Via Conejo near Lake Hodges in South Escondido about 4:30 p.m.Firefighters said the horse was on its side and could not stand due to rocks and steep terrain.A veterinarian and a San Diego Animals Services officer helped firefighters improvise a sling and bring the horse to level ground. The horse was able to walk back to its corral unharmed. No one was injured in the process of saving the animal. 609

Election officials across the country say they are worried about their staff's safety as the presidential race remains too close to call three days after Election Day.Officials in battleground states like Arizona, Nevada and Pennsylvania say ballot counters have face threats from protesters who have been demonstrating in front of election centers in their states."I can tell you that my wife and my mother are very concerned for me,” Joe Gloria, the registrar in Clark County, Nevada, said during a press conference Thursday. There have been no reports of violence against ballot counters as of Friday morning. However, WPVI-TV in Philadelphia reports that police have thwarted a plot to attack the Pennsylvania Convention Center, where Philadelphia-area ballots are currently being tallied.Conservative protesters have also gathered at ballot-counting centers in Phoenix and Atlanta. The demonstrators have called for officials to continue counting ballots in Arizona — where Biden's lead has shrunk in recent days — while the AP reports that protesters in Atlanta were concerned about voter fraud. In Michigan, state Attorney General Dana Nessel reported on Twitter that members of her staff were being harassed."Dear members of the public: Please stop making harassing & threatening calls to my staff," Nessel tweeted. "They are kind, hardworking public servants just doing their job. Asking them to shove sharpies in uncomfortable places is never appropriate & is a sad commentary on the state of our nation."Nessel was referring to a since-debunked conspiracy theory that alleges that supporters of President Donald Trump were told to fill out ballots in Sharpie markers, which would cause the ink to bleed through the paper and cause the ballot not to count. 1780

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) — The man charged with killing a 55-year-old woman as she left bible study last year has been sentenced.Dionicio Torrez Jr., 25, was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the March 7, 2017, shooting of Catherine Kennedy in Escondido. The judge also gave Torrez Jr. an extra 35 years to life in prison for attempted murder of rival gang members. He must also register as a gang member.Jurors found Torrez Jr. guilty of first-degree murder with a special-circumstance gang allegation, attempted murder, and two counts of shooting at an occupied vehicle in October.RELATED:Accused gang member pleads not guilty in fatal shooting of Escondido womanEscondido neighborhoods continue their fight against gangsGang member convicted in fatal shooting of Escondido woman leaving churchInvestigators say Torrez Jr. was chasing after two rival gang members who had been tagging near an apartment complex where he lived at about 9 p.m. As the two ran across the street, Torrez Jr. fired several shots. Kennedy was leaving an Escondido church, when she was struck by a stray bullet from the gunfire and crashed her vehicle on Grand Avenue. She was taken to Palomar Hospital, where she died from her injuries.A 16-year-old boy was also arrested in the case and charged in Juvenile Court. 1314

Father and son stories aren't supposed to look like this."I was praying for my friends and family to be OK," said Braden Freidkes, a freshman at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. He was inside the school when a gunman started shooting.Braden eventually made it out and into his parents' arms. They had been trying to reach him repeatedly and up until that point had feared the worst. "We were one of the lucky ones. We were able to get him and he was safe," said John Freidkes, Braden's father. But now Braden and his dad have a shared experience, in a way they could have never imagined.  605

Escaping to Bali after an argument with your mom might be every teenager's dream. But for one particularly adventurous -- and reckless -- 12-year-old Australian boy, the dream became reality, even if it wasn't for much more than a week. The boy in question, whom Nine Network's "A Current Affair" gave the pseudonym "Drew," is apparently not one to take "no" as an answer. So, when his mum told him he could not go to Bali, he stole her credit card, booked a flight to Bali's Denpasar airport and traveled there alone."Drew" was ingenious enough that he realized he could fly alone on multiple Australian airlines from Sydney to Denpasar with just a valid passport and student ID, "A Current Affair" reported. 716
