SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Balboa Park is getting some new trees and, in turn, lending itself to a new brew.Friends of Balboa Park planted about 27 new trees in Balboa Park Friday in celebration of Arbor Day. The trees were placed in the grove on Park Blvd. and Morley Field Dr., across from the San Diego Zoo.The trees planted including six different varieties and are all perfect for San Diego's semi-arid climate."Friends is honored to have such strong support from our donors and corporate partners that enables us to continue making meaningful enhancements to the Park," John Bolthouse, Friends of Balboa Park executive director, said. "Balboa Park is already the jewel of San Diego, so being able to add more trees to the lush landscape is a great gift Friends and its supporters are thrilled to give the community."RELATED: San Diego takes part in international City Nature ChallengeThe tree varieties include Agonis flexuosa (peppermint willow), Cinnamomum camphora (camphor tree), Erythrina corralloides (naked coral tree), Ficus macrophylla (moreton bay fig tree), Bauhinia blakeana (Hong Kong orchid tree), and Podocarpus gracilior (fern pine.)In addition to Balboa Park's new trees, some of the park's nature can be found in San Diego craft beer for a limited time.Karl Strauss Brewing and Automatic Brewing have partnered with San Diego Urban Timber to offer their "Urban Arbor IPA." py the city of Berkeley in passing a law that allows activists to rescue animals in distress, like cows and chickens, from slaughterhouses.“It’s a big step to stop everyone to stop eating animals, so they’re not going quite that far,” says one demonstrator. “But what they’re trying to do is at least give those animals the right to be rescued.”San Diego Police arrived on scene and tried negotiating with the chained protesters to get them to leave. After 45 minutes, San Diego Fire-Rescue and other resources came in. The chains were cut and the protesters were taken into custody.“We want to make sure that everyone involved is safe and that no laws are broken,” says Capt. Mike Holden with SDPD. “In this case, we gave plenty of notice, and unfortunately, we had to effect for arrest.”Police say it is permissible to protest on the property but it is against the law to impede the flow of business.Shortly after the arrests, those who were not taken into custody held a rally outside City Hall. Organizers would like for San Diego leaders to implement rules locally that will endorse Rose’s law, which is an animal bill of rights.Rose’s law extends the rights of animals, like those found on a farm, to free, not owned; to not be exploited, abused or killed by humans; to have their rights represented in court; and the right to be free.City leaders are currently not taking up the issue. 1761

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Around 400,000 people in San Diego County face hunger, including one in six children. To fight and end hunger in our county, programs like Feeding San Diego bridge the gap for those facing food insecurity and getting access to donations. "We were faced with so many decisions of its either food or paying the bills," said Gabriela Sanchez. Sanchez, a mom of four with a baby on the way, struggled to put food on the table after her husband got sick. "It was hard to even explain to the kids," Sanchez said. Now, she is getting the help she needs through Feeding San Diego's program in Oceanside. The program sets up at San Luis Rey Elementary school, one of their distribution sites, so the community can get access to free healthy food. "It's been a big difference between eating fruit from the cans to eating the fresh fruit and vegetables," Sanchez said. Donate to Month of a Million MealsAccording to Matthew Jennings, Director of Communications at Oceanside Unified School District, access to fresh, healthy food, will help students succeed in the classroom. "When a child shows up for school in the morning, and their belly isn't hungry and they're not worried about what they are going to each for lunch, students and families are able to focus on their education and on their time together," Jennings said. Gabriela Sanchez says the food has made a positive impact in her kids' lives. "With Ivan and Jacob, we've seen so much improvement. They have actually been able to exceed their reading levels, their math levels. They have been able to concentrate more," Sanchez said. The impact Feeding San Diego's program has had on this family is life-changing. "They go, mom, you're always crying, and I'm like it's just a blessing," Sanchez said. Gabriela Sanchez says she is forever grateful. 1823

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- California state officials have issued their COVID-19 guidelines for gathering during the holidays. With less than two weeks until Thanksgiving, the guidelines include things like physical distancing and wearing a mask when not eating or drinking. There are specific guidelines for counties in the purple tier, like San Diego County. Counties in the purple tier are required to gather outdoors. Health officials recommend no more than three households and limiting the gathering to two hours or less. Infectious disease specialists say the guidelines are strict, but necessary to slow the spread of the virus. Other recommendations include having guests frequently wash their hands and having only one person serve food and beverages, with a mask on. Older and at-risk individuals are advised not to attend.
