SINGAPORE, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said here Thursday that China and Singapore should strive to create new opportunities for bilateral cooperation in an effort to achieve economic recovery at an early date.     Hu made the remarks during a speech at a reception held by Singapore business circles, which was also attended by Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng. Chinese President Hu Jintao delivers a speech during a reception held by Singapore business circles in Singapore, Nov. 12, 2009.The Chinese president expressed full confidence in the prospect of China-Singapore trade and economic cooperation, calling for the two nations to work together to create an even brighter future for their mutually beneficial cooperation.     China and Singapore have maintained close high-level contacts and achieved fruitful cooperation in various fields since they established diplomatic ties in 1990, said Hu, who is on a state visit to Singapore.     Singapore has now become an important cooperative partner of China in the ASEAN region and bilateral trade and economic cooperation between the two nations have been growing steadily, the Chinese president said.     "China-Singapore cooperation has always been closely connected with the development strategy of both countries and progressed with times," Hu said.     The "flagship projects" in bilateral cooperation, including the Suzhou Industrial Park and Tianjin Eco-City projects, have seen remarkable achievements and smooth progress, Hu said.     He added that the implementation of a free trade arrangement between China and Singapore has helped raise the level of their economic cooperation.     The friendly and mutually beneficial cooperation between China and Singapore has not only brought about substantial benefits to their people, but also helped promote regional peace, stability and prosperity, he stressed.     China will staunchly adhere to the path of peaceful development and the opening-up strategy for mutual benefits and win-win situations. It will continue to develop friendly cooperation with countries around the world on the basis of the five principles of peaceful coexistence, the president said.     The country will also continue to work with nations globally to strive to build a harmonious world with lasting peace and common prosperity, he said.     The business circles of Singapore voiced their belief that a stable and prosperous China would bring benefits to the region and the world as a whole.     They also expressed the willingness to continue to play an active role in advancing mutually beneficial cooperation and bilateral ties between Singapore and China.     Trade between China and Singapore reached 52.4 billion U.S. dollars in 2008, up 10.5 percent year-on-year.     Up until now, Singapore has made investments worth more than 40 billion U.S. dollar in China. It has become one of the top overseas investment destinations for Chinese companies.

WUHAN, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- A senior leader of the Communist Party of China (CPC) has urged officials and governments at all levels to serve the people by addressing their concerns.     He Guoqiang, member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks during his visit in Chibi City of central China's Hubei Province on Saturday.     He said officials and governments must solve well the problems that concern people's immediate interests to ensure social harmony and stability.     When visiting a local village and urban community of the city, He urged local officials to help residents increase their incomes and answer the needs required by the people.     He asked the officials to improve their ability of resolving practical problems to bring about more tangible benefits to local people.     He, also secretary of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the CPC, also called on local Party organs to improve their organizational construction, promote intra-party democracy and strengthen the struggle against corruption.

HUA HIN, Thailand, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and his Australian counterpart Kevin Rudd called here on Saturday for an early signing of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two Asia-Pacific major economies. "The mutual-respect, mutual-trust and cooperation between China and Australia, both as big countries in the Asia-Pacific region, will not only yield tangible benefits for the two nations, but also have a positive impact on a larger scale," Wen said in talks with Rudd on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summits.     The key to maintaining a sound and steady development of bilateral ties lies in their respect for and care about each other's core interests and major concerns, Wen said, pledging to work together with Australia to boost their ties. Addressing the science and technology community in Beijing, Wen said China should be built into an innovation-oriented country and neo-strategic industries should become the leading force in promoting the social and economic development.     He called on scientists to boost research in such neo-strategic industries as the new energy industry, information networking industry, micro-electronics and nanotechnology, life science as well space and ocean exploration. BEIJING, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- China issued a directive Friday that aims to promote renovation of the substandard dwellings in the country's urban areas and at state-owned factories and mines, in a move to improve the livelihood of low-income people.     Renovation of squatter homes in cities and at state-owned factories should be completed in the next fives years, according to the directive posted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development on its website.     Priority should be given to "the shanty towns covering large areas and with severe safety defects," according to the ministry.     It also urged relevant departments to give full respect to the rights and interests of the people living in substandard dwellings, who are mainly low-income laid-off workers, and to ensure that renovating work be conducted in an open and fair way.     The directive put forward multiple ways to finance the renovation work, including government funds, favorable loans from financial institutions, and tax rebates.     By the end of 2008, China had 11.48 million families living in substandard housing, 7.44 million of which lived in cities, 2.38 million near state-owned plants and mines, 1.66 million in forest zones and reclamation areas.
