Just days after the mass shooting at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, a makeshift memorial with flowers and stuffed animals continues to grow.But that’s not the only sign of support arriving in this small town east of San Antonio.Mary Beth Fisk is the CEO of a San Antonio-based counseling and education non-profit called The Ecumenical Center. She and her team have been on the ground since Sunday night to provide counseling to victims and family member, particularly children.“Everybody’s grief journey is unique to them,” Fisk said. “It’s important to have someone who’s trained to walk through this complicated grief process with these families.”Fisk was nearby near the makeshift memorial on Tuesday, around for anyone who may need to talk.While Fisk spends time next to the flowers at the corner outside the church, across the street on another corner Donna Watkins was setting up a table of stuffed animals she brought with her from her home in Corpus Christi.Watkins is with the Homicide Survivors Support Group. She says she lost her brother decades ago and that gives her a unique perspective from which to assist.“It’s the most traumatic, worst thing that a family can ever go through. There is no way that unless you have walked through their shoes that you know where they’re coming from.”Up the road about 15 miles is the small, one-room St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. One of its 27 congregants is Paula Reinecke.  They were still in church services in the nearby town of Adkins this Sunday when they heard the sirens heading to the scene in Sutherland Springs.Almost immediately, she and her husband, having both recently finished culinary school and having assisted in Hurricane Harvey at similar events, decided to put their skills to use.“In Texas, we barbecue,” Reinecke said. “It’s a comfort food here.”They—and their newly-formed organization they call “Smokin’ Angels BBQ Ministry"—are hosting a barbecue benefit event this Saturday on the grounds of the church. They posted about the event on Facebook Sunday night, and, as Reinecke said, overnight “it kind of exploded.”They’re already gotten hundreds of calls, texts, and Facebook messages with offers of money, barbecue pits, even a walk-in cooler for the weekend; not to mention they’ve already received over 3,000 pounds of pork.“Being Texans, we jump in and save each others’ backs. KGTV (SAN DIEGO) - The report investigating whether President Donald Trump or his aides colluded with Russians to interfere with the 2016 election, or obstruct justice, has been handed over to the Department of Justice. So what now?"He didn't call a ball or a strike, he said you know I'm just going to let you guys do this," said former U.S. Attorney Chuck LaBella. LaBella explained Attorney Robert Mueller is leaving it up to the Department of Justice to decide."I actually think it's the right call for him to make because he is not in the Department of Justice, he's a former prosecutor, he knows what the rules are, he knows what the standard is, but this is a Department of Justice policy decision," LaBella said. LaBella worked on a similar investigation, during former President Bill Clinton's administration, regarding campaign finance abuses.When it comes to how much information can be released, LaBella said the public will probably only see 30-40% of the findings. "People calling for the public wholesale release of this need to really check the law, because the law is pretty clear,", he explained, saying grand jury materials, including interviews, are private."It could potentially hurt people who only had tangential involvement in this. They were initially suspected of bad conduct," he said. LaBella said they were exonerated by the end of the investigation and it would be embarrassing to tie them to the investigation.What does all of this mean to San Diegans?"I don't think anything's going to change the election in California, I mean California's pretty much on one side already," LaBella said.10News spoke with local Democratic Rep. Susan Davis, who adamantly wants the full report released, saying it has huge implications on future politics. "I think it raises a lot of questions for our next election, in what we're going to do, how we're going to prepare for it, and so a lot of this really informs us all to be sure this never happens again," Davis said. JUNO BEACH, Fla. — Plastic may be impacting sea turtles more than you might think.According to a new international study, plastic was found in the gut of every single sea turtle researchers examined, casting light on just how bad plastic pollution is in our oceans.The problem lies with microplastics, which from plastic that ends up in the ocean through pollution. It breaks down into tiny pieces due to the sun and other environmental factors and then gets eaten by sea turtles and other marine life that mistakes it for food.The new research was published in the journal Global Change Biology. It found plastic in more than 100 sea turtles across the world in the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean and Mediterranean Sea.Click here to read the studySome of the objects researchers found in the turtles' guts included tire pieces, cigarettes and fishing line."Some of these chemicals are known to be endocrine disruptors, which means they mess up the hormones of the turtles," said Charles Manire, staff veterinarian at Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach, Florida. "They may affect the immune system, making them vulnerable to infections."In addition to treating sick and injured sea turtles, LMC also conducts research on the sea turtle population, including recent a collaboration with the University of Georgia to study plastic's impact on sea turtles. "We published a study recently where we examined 97 post hatchling and tiny juvenile turtles — we had plastic in all but one of those," Manire said.Click here to read the LMC/UGA studyThey've found the same problems locally, mainly in post-hatchling and juvenile turtles."That generation of turtles may not survive and that could have a major impact on the population if we don’t have turtles growing up to reach adulthood," Manire said. "Plastics have toxins in them. The chemicals that are used to makes the plastics are affecting the turtles in ways that are not very obvious to us."Manire explained that the area where the baby turtles live and grow lies within the seaweed patch offshore and, unfortunately, that's where the problem exists."It’s also where trash accumulates, in the same area," he said. "Especially with the very tiny bits of plastic, these little turtles are eating it because it looks like food to them."The new study by Global Change Biology also estimates between 4.8 million and 12.7 million tons of plastic waste could be entering oceans every year."It’s not affecting just the turtles. It’s affecting a lot of them out there," he said. "But the turtles are the sentinel that tells us something is wrong and the little turtles are definitely telling us something is wrong."If you want to help lessen the impact of plastic on marine life, Manire said, you can start by picking up any trash you see on the beach."We're trying to educate the public, trying to educate the world, telling the story so that people realize just how bad the situation is," he said. "So much plastic is ending up into the ocean, not necessarily people intentionally dumping, but plastic that blows off land or washes off land during storms."You can also recycle and reduce the amount of plastic you use such as plastic straws, cutlery and cups and substitute reusable items instead. 3329
