Thousands of Americans descended upon Washington D.C. Friday for a "March on Washington." The event was organized following the death of George Floyd earlier this year. "It's just too much injustice," Beth Wagner, who traveled from New Jersey to participate in the march, said. Wagner has two black sons. "I am always in fear they could be at the wrong place at the wrong time," Wagner added. Andre Miller traveled from Portland, Oregon, with his 14-year-old son. There was a rare sight at San Diego City Hall on Tuesday.A local developer pitched a massive mixed-use complex with hundreds of homes to the council, in front of mostly empty seats. "Our focus has always been on creating a sense of place for the entire neighborhood," said builder Gary Levitt, of Sea Breeze Properties.Sea Breeze Properties plans to transform a 72-acre site just south of the 56 into hundreds of homes, plus offices, retail, and even a hotel and movie theater. The project, Merge 56, didn't get a single 'no' vote from multiple community planning groups.Some nearby residents even came to the meeting to support the project. But even with that backing, it still took five years just to get the council's unanimous vote of approval Tuesday.Levitt said the delays come from regulations, including environmental impact reports, and cost his company an extra million - about 15 percent of that in city processing fees.Councilman Scott Sherman said that is one reason we're in housing crisis. "At the end of the day all the prices get passed along to the consumer and the price of housing," Sherman said. Levitt said ideally it would take two years for a project to get approved. "It's a very expensive process and at the end of the day you're just playing with paper," he said. The project includes 242 new homes, condos, and apartments. Additionally, 47 of them will be affordable units. Two environmentalists did raise concerns about local impacts but the council didn't acknowledge them in their deliberation. Levitt's work, however, isn't done. Tour promoter Live Nation has announced its first-ever drive-in concerts series in the U.S. for July, months after the live music industry has been on lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic. The entertainment company on Monday announced “Live from the Drive-In” — a set of nine shows to take place July 10-12 in three different cities. Brad Paisley will headline shows in all three cities, while fellow country artists Darius Rucker and Jon Pardi will also perform in Nashville at Nissan Stadium. Nelly will perform in Maryland Heights, near St. Louis.The 3-day concert series will take place at the Ruoff Music Center in Indiana and Hollywood Casino Amphitheater in Missouri - both are outdoor concert venues - and in the parking lot of Nissan Stadium, where the Tennessee Titans play. Each location will have LED screens and speakers around the lot, according to Live Nation. Ticketing is per vehicle with up to four people inside, and includes access to a parking space and adjoining "tailgate" area. Top health officials are considering “pooled testing” as a way to ramp up COVID-19 tests.Here's how it works:Instead of testing each sample individually, labs pool together a certain amount, like 10, in one tube with one test.If it's negative, you double check it, and then you're done.If there's a positive, you break it down either into smaller pools or individually for further testing.“So, there are advantages, mostly cost savings, that's the huge advantage of pooling, also the ability to go through a very large volume of specimens,” said Dr. Thomas Quinn, an infectious disease researcher at National Institute of Allergy and Infectious DiseasesQuinn worked in one of many labs that used the pooling technique during the HIV epidemic in the 1980s. He says the difference between then and now is the tests themselves.Pooling dilutes the samples. The HIV tests were very accurate, so that wasn't an issue, but with COVID-19, the tests aren't as reliable.The other problem is pooling takes more time in the lab, even with robotic equipment helping.“We need to get everyone tested and everyone wants to know what's the result of my test within 24 hours. That's very hard to do with pooling,” said Quinn.Quinn isn't recommending pooling for individual testing right now. He says it could be more useful in big surveys, when it's not an emergency. 1357
