SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Uber recently released a safety report highlighting the number of sexual assaults reported by passengers between 2017 and 2018.In the two years, nearly 6,000 people reported being sexually assaulted. Of those, 464 reported being raped.“When you get in the car you should be able to feel safe, like nothing is going to happen to you,” said attorney Mike Bomberger. That feeling of security is quickly evaporating in an age where it is completely normal to jump into a car with a stranger.RELATED: Uber safety report reveals nearly 6,000 reports of sexual assaultBomberger’s firm, Estey & Bomberger, represents more than 100 women in approximately 40 states who reported being sexually assaulted in Uber and Lyft rides.Three of the women reported incidents that happened in San Diego.“Each situation here in San Diego is different,” he said. “The one common theme is that a driver, a predator, took advantage of a vulnerable female in the backseat of a vehicle.”He said in most of the cases he represents, the women are intoxicated and trying to get home safely.“You're getting into a car with someone you know nothing about,” he said. “Every single woman that we represent that has been assaulted has Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.”RELATED: Uber, Lyft riders report being charged for cleanup fees for messes they didn't makeAccording to the report, more than three million Uber trips were taken daily in 2017 and 2018.Bomberger said a key part of the solution, is to install cameras or other recording devices in every Uber and Lyft driver's vehicle."What’s the likelihood of a driver who knows there’s a camera in the car to sexually assault or rape somebody in the car?" he asked. "It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize the changes of that happening are going to be exponentially lower."Uber has already started doing this in some states."I hope their intent is to roll that out in other states as well because that is the single biggest way they’re going to prevent women from being harmed and assaulted," said Bomberger. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Uber announced Wednesday that the ride sharing company has chosen San Diego to be part of the new Uber Rewards program.The program lets users earn points every time they use Uber or Uber Eats, and the loyalty program has four membership levels: Blue, Gold, Platinum and Diamond.Once customers sign up, they’ll begin to earn points. Users will earn one point for every eligible dollar spent on UberPool and Uber Eats, two points for UberX, UberXL, Select and WAV and three points for Black and Black SUV.Once you earn 500 points within six months, you’ll advance from Blue to Gold. At 2,500 points you’ll advance to Platinum. And at 7,500 points, you’ll advance to Diamond.According to Uber, customers will get added to their Uber Cash balance for every 500 points earned to use on rides and Uber Eats.Other benefits for higher membership levels include flexible cancellations, price protection, priority pickups and upgrades.Other cities included in the rollout of the program include Miami, New Jersey, Denver, Tampa, New York, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and Atlanta. 1103

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two women are launching a new nonprofit, Black San Diego, to bolster Black-owned businesses locally.It started at a kitchen table over chips and salsa four years ago. Sheri Jones, a real estate broker, and physical education teacher Tinicia Smith wanted to create a hub for Black-owned businesses in San Diego.They created a Facebook group called Black San Diego and now they're more than 34,000 members strong."For the last four years we've been able to collect data and what we realize is that business owners haven't been able to sustain because they don't have the tools," Jones said.She first noticed the issue when she was running her real estate business and went to a conference. She said she was the one Black person there and it was uncomfortable."I knew when I was having trouble, others must be too," Jones said.This week, Black San Diego became official, registered through the government and they're excited to plan workshops to offer those tools to the community. Jones described the workshop as, "an 8-week course where they can go through and get business basics, book keeping, business taxes, really how to formulate their corporation."Newly Appointed Board Member and CEO of Growth 1031 Lance Growth said these workshops are crucial for black-owned businesses like his."I stumbled into my position.. I made so many mistakes and I just had to sit down and learn from those mistakes," he said. "I'm going to send my operations lady, and ask her to take some extra notes on accounting, on marketing, on filing correctly, but it's a really beneficial tool."The workshop costs 0 per business and the nonprofit is launching a donation campaign to sponsor local Black-owned businesses."If the dollar circulates in the Black community then we can unite and produce generational wealth and that's what we're here to do," Smith said.They hope to bring members of their community out and help them elevate their business, "they don't want to step in the front, not get criticized, not get caught up in the chaos. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers over the weekend seized 461 pounds of narcotics worth more than .1 million and captured 14 fugitives.Officers intercepted 350 pounds of methamphetamine, 71 pounds of cocaine and 36 pounds of marijuana.The drugs were seized and the arrests made between Friday, October 27 and Sunday, October 29.The drugs were discovered in vehicles’ floor, car battery, seats, gas tank, tires and quarter panels, according to the agency.The 14 fugitives were arrested for charges including homicide, wire fraud, robbery and parole violations.One of those arrested was Deven Bargas, 20. Authorities say Bargas was wanted by the San Jose Police Department for homicide. 724

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- We know the importance of wearing a mask to protect the nose and mouth from the novel coronavirus, but some new research is raising questions about whether the general public should wear goggles, glasses or a shield to protect their eyes.The CDC already urges healthcare workers to wear eye protection. The agency updated its guidance in July, encouraging even healthcare workers in low-transmission environments to wear eye protection when it was previously listed as “optional.”Experts think the nose is still the main entry point for the virus because of the mechanics of breathing, but the surface of the eye is lined with the same mucous membrane to which the virus likes to bind.Animal studies have shown SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, can enter through the eyes and there have been viral particles detected in human tears, but there’s no clear-cut data so far showing the eyes are a major entry point, said ophthalmologist Dr. Annie Nguyen at the USC Roski Eye Institute.However, some observational studies have suggested protecting the eyes may lower the risk of infection.In June, a study in the Journal Lancet suggested face shields, goggles and glasses could lower the risk of infection from 16 percent to 6 percent.Another study published this month suggests that simply wearing eyeglasses could help.Researchers examined 276 hospitalized patients in Suizhou, China. Based on trends in that region, they expected about 31 percent of the patients would wear eyeglasses. Instead, just 5 percent of the hospitalized patients wore glasses.The researchers noted the observational study had limitations, but theorized that eyeglasses may offer a protective barrier against the virus.“I wouldn’t be quick to make the recommendation for everyone to run out and wear glasses,” Dr. Nguyen said.An editorial published alongside the eyeglasses study urged caution. “Although it is tempting to conclude from this study that everyone should wear eyeglasses, goggles, or a face shield in public to protect their eyes and themselves from COVID-19, from an epidemiological perspective, we must be careful to avoid inferring a causal relationship from a single observational study,” wrote Dr. Lisa Maragakis at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.Experts say more evidence is needed because urging people to wear eye protection could have harmful side effects, like causing the wearer to inadvertently touch their face more frequently.“If there is additional evidence that builds up, then that’s the point that we change guidelines,” said Dr. Christian Ramers of Family Health Centers of San Diego.“People have had whiplash from things changing and going back and forth,” he added, citing the change in guidelines on face coverings.Still, some experts say people with underlying conditions should consider adding eye protection, as long as they’re careful not to touch their face.Doctors have suggested that people who wear contact lenses might want to switch to eyeglasses to cut down on the number of times they touch their eyes, but Dr. Nguyen said there’s no hard data yet showing contact lens-wearers are at greater risk from the virus. 3184
