JAPATUL VALLEY (CNS) - Firefighters battled for a fourth day Tuesday to subdue a Santa Ana-driven wildfire that blackened thousands of acres in rural eastern San Diego County over the Labor Day weekend, leveling about a dozen homes and forcing widespread evacuations.The blaze erupted for unknown reasons early Saturday afternoon off Spirit Trail in Japatul Valley, near Alpine, according to Cal Fire.The flames had spread over an estimated 17,565 acres and destroyed at least 11 residences and 25 outbuildings Tuesday, the state agency reported. The fire is now 11% contained. Dry, whipping winds out of the east made efforts to control the blaze, dubbed the Valley Fire, extremely urgent and challenging."It's supposed to really kick off this afternoon," Cal Fire Capt. Players entered Chicago Pizza on the first floor of Jacksonville Landing and Dickie said there was little security."It's unfortunate because it was a smaller event, I mean it wasn't a large event," Dickie said. "If you go to events like the Barclay's Center or Staple's, you're going to go through a metal detector."Inside, gamers entered their own world."It is probably the biggest quality of a gamer, to have that intense focus, so everybody was focused on gameplay," Dickie said. JUNEAU, Alaska — The U.S. Bureau of Land Management plans to hold an oil and gas lease sale for land in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge next month. Meanwhile, banks around the world are publicly saying they will not finance oil and gas development in the Arctic.The land agency says it plans to hold a lease sale on Jan. 6. It comes just weeks before President-elect Joe Biden is set to take office, and he has said he opposes drilling in that region.The refuge is home to migrating caribou, polar bears and other wildlife."Congress directed us to hold lease sales in the ANWR Coastal Plain, and we have taken a significant step in announcing the first sale in advance of the December 2021 deadline set by law," said a statement Thursday from Chad Padgett, the Alaska state director for the Bureau of Land Management.In 2017, the Republican-led Congress approved legislation to open up the coastal Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for oil development. The measure required two lease sales within seven years, with the first sale no later than the end of 2021.Conservation groups criticized news of the sale as rushed and based on environmental reviews that are currently being challenged in court as flawed. Conservation groups, the Indigenous Gwich'in people, and a coalition of 15 states have filed lawsuits challenging the environmental reviews.Alaska politicians say opening the area for exploration would boost oil production, create jobs and generate royalties.However, even if a lease sale is held, there are questions about which companies could afford to drill in the refuge.Just this week, Bank of America said they are ruling out financing for oil and gas development in the Arctic, including in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Plaza Academy teacher Justin Gillespie is bringing hip hop production to his classroom.The class is called ‘The Beat Academy of KC’ and is the 5th and 6th hour at school for students.“It's the only program in Kansas City that teaches kids how to make hip hop production,” Gillespie said.Gillespie launched the program back in August.“It's been something I've done in my personal life,” Gillespie said. “I've been a professional musician for 15 years and it's been super rewarding.”From beats to rhythms, students take their creativity to a whole new level.“I'm excited to go here everyday,” freshman Thom Van Til said. “I get joyful when I come here, like it helps me calm down,” 8th grader K’ron Lyons said.The class is producing more than just quality hip hop, it’s also producing higher grades and more engagement from students.“Justin would probably say you cannot perform because your grades is bad, so he encourages me to like make sure I do my work,” Lyons said.Students plan to perform what they’ve been working on at the Beat Academy Block Party alongside Kansas City hip hop artists like Ces Cru, JL & Info Gates, Adrian Truth and Suli4Q. The school is raising funds to build a recording studio this summer, to make more courses available to students next year.  1328

JAMUL, Calif. (KGTV) - Neighbors are calling for more safety measures after surveillance video captured a fiery collision at an intersection in Jamul.A week ago, just before 5 p.m., Marc Burnett was opening up his off-road racing shop along Campo Road, when he heard it."I heard the skid marks hitting, and then I heard the boom," said Burnett.He ran outside and was greeted by flames."I just saw flames in the air. I saw a lot of flames. I saw the guy on the ground. He was on fire," said Burnett.Burnett raced back inside."I got the fire extinguisher, and had to put the motorcycle out -- and him," said Burnett.Burnett says the motorcycle driver, a man in his 30s, suffered serious burns to his hands and legs, but survived."He was very lucky that he survived," said Burnett.Burnett even more amazed when he looked at his surveillance video.In it you can see the truck pulling into the intersection from Maxfield Road and stop, before the eastbound motorcycle slams into the side of the truck, exploding into flames."Very scary to see that video. Didn’t know it was that bad until I saw it," said Burnett.Sadly, it was not unfamiliar.Burnett, who’s been in the area for more than 15 years, says he’s seen the aftermath of some eight serious accidents at that intersection, including a person killed crossing the road."It’s kind of a blind turn ... People coming out where the truck coming out ... It's hard to judge," said Burnett.Burnett is now lobbying for a traffic light at that intersection, which is often busy with casino traffic."Drivers are passing semi trucks on the turn. It's dangerous.
