CINCINNATI — Cross-country runner Justin Gallegos is making history. He’s the first athlete with cerebral palsy to sign an endorsement contract with Nike. The University of Oregon junior was given the news last weekend after a college race, and he was visibly touched by achieving his dream of becoming a professional runner. (KGTV) - The scared whimpers of a little dog which had been missing from his Eastlake home for days led to a courageous rescue by a Chula Vista firefighter Thursday morning.The 30-pound dog, Sammy, disappeared from his home in Eastlake Trails Monday, according to Chula Vista Fire Department officials.Early Thursday morning, Sammy’s family noticed sounds coming from a drainage pipe near their home on Secret Canyon Place.Family members called the fire department which responded, along with Chula Vista Public Works crews and Chula Vista Police, to find the dog in an 18-inch drainage pipe underground.Firefighter Jed Burt went down a manhole and crawled through the drainage pipe, which was roughly the size of his helmet, to reach Sammy.When the dog refused to come out on his own, Burt pushed the dog through the pipe to another manhole nearby.Video posted on the IAFF Local 2180 Chula Vista Firefighters union Instagram account shows the moment Sammy reached the surface.Sammy was reunited with his family and suffered no apparent injuries.10News is working to bring you developments in this story. 1137

(KGTV) — A Chula Vista neighborhood is on alert after an encounter between three young boys and two men in an SUV.Aydyn Mays, 8, and his brother Jaycob, 7, were skateboarding with a friend along Glendora Drive Tuesday afternoon when they say a dark-colored SUV drove up with two men inside."They were about 30 years of age and one was wearing a bright safety vest," said Wendy Mays, the boys' mother.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodAydyn says the men asked them if they wanted an extra skateboard."They said, 'I have the same skateboard, but way much faster...Just get in the car, and I can take you to my house and I can show you the skateboard," said Aydyn.Aydyn says the men asked each of the boys and all said "No," but the men kept asking and insisting."It seemed like they wanted me to go inside the car," said Aydyn."They were trying to lie to us and steal us. I was scared," said Jaycob.Eventually, the boys ran off and straight to their homes and their moms."The boys came running into the home ... and said, 'Somebody tried to kidnap us!'" said Wendy Mays.Mays says soon after, the mom of the other boy was at her door."It was terrifying. Just made my heart fall into the pit of my stomach," said Mays.The boys' stories matched. Police were called, leading to a search, but the SUV was not found."I'm very proud of the boys getting away and coming to us. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A state-of-the-art hospital is nearly complete in the South Bay. The Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center is expanding, adding a seven-story hospital to the current facility. "I think this is just everything for this community, right now we're really the only ones investing down here in the South Bay, in Chula Vista," says Matt Teichner, Sharp Chula Vista Senior Project Manager."Everyone who comes in here gets seen regardless of your ability to pay, we see people from both sides of the border here, and we are just full to the brim every day right now."It will be the first new hospital in San Diego's South Bay in more than 40 years.Planners say patient safety and infection control was the number one factor when designing the new hospital. The new hospital features advanced operating rooms as well as innovative technologies. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Three people managed to crawl out of their flipped car after it crashed in Chula Vista.According to Chula Vista Police, the crash happened around 1:00 a.m. on East H Street and Otay Lakes Road.Police say the driver was speeding and lost control on a curve, hit the center divider, then started spinning before the car flipped onto its roof.The driver and the two passengers crawled out of the wreckage just as paramedics and police arrived.Two people were taken to a hospital, and the third person was treated at the scene. All of them are expected to be okay.Police believe speed was a factor in the crash. 644
