How does someone who relies on his voice for a living, such as an auctioneer, keep it in top form?You may be surprised to find out what it takes to keep talking up success.As exciting as it is to be in the seats during a live auction, imagine being the man behind the microphone.  "I just love excitement," said professional auctioneer John Korrey. "It's an art."Korrey has been a professional auctioneer for more than 20 years, time he's spent solidifying his sound."There's not any two auctioneers that sound alike," said Korrey. "I can sit here and say countfive, 10, 15, 20, but when I put a chant to it, 'I bid five dollar bid now ten now fifteen fifteen twenty now twenty twenty thirty,' see I'm rolling my tongue and I'm adding some rhythm and I'm breathing."Leading auctions, sometimes for hours on end, has taught Korrey one important thing."We're not a machine," said Korrey. "If it's equipment breaks ... a starter down ... you put a new one in."When my voice goes down I have no wage, I'm done," he said.That's why Korrey spends so much time at the Colorado Voice Clinic, working with Kathe Perez to make sure his voice is okay."Let's start off with an easy feeling of breathing," Perez instructed Korrey. Then the two go through vocal exercises together. "Let's bring it down a key," Perez said. "A big brown bug bit a big brown bear, a big brown bug bit a big brown bear."It's not just vocal exercises that keep his voice in check. A camera goes down Korrey's throat and gives doctors a look at his vocal chords in action."The strobe exam is an artificial form of slow motion that lets us look at the actual vocal folds as they produce sound," said Dr. David Opperman with Presbyterian/St. Luke's Medical Center. "We can pick up subtle abnormalities in the way the chords are moving, if there's a tension difference between the right and left side.  And it's really revolutionized what we do in the voice industry."Opperman said it's not just people like John who need to take care of their voice. Really it's anyone from teachers to customer service operators who does a lot of talking. He says staying germ-free, resting your voice for a time and rinsing your nose with salt water, can all help.From old-school voice training, to high-tech analysis, who knew it takes a combination of care you can't see from the stage, to keep Korrey's voice, and the auction, going strong. 2468

In a memo sent to state governors, the federal government says that states should be prepared to begin distribution of COVID-19 vaccines to the public this fall.The memo signed by CDC head Robert Redfield told governors that the federal government has contracted with the McKesson Corporation to assist in distributing the vaccine to local and state health departments, medical facilities, doctor officers, and other vaccine providers.In the letter, Redfield requested governors to waive any regulatory barriers that would prevent McKesson from operating distribution facilities. Redfield said the goal is to have these facilities operational by November 1.According to McKesson, the company provides “next-day deliveries” to pharmacies and has a nationwide network of distribution centers.While there is urgency for both public health and economic reasons for a vaccine, some experts have expressed concern over the speed of a vaccine and whether the expedited timeline is long enough to demonstrate efficacy. Dr. Anthony Fauci told NBC News on Wednesday that he believes a “safe and effective” vaccine could be ready by the end of the year."I believe that by the time we get to the end of this calendar year, that we will feel comfortable that we do have a safe and effective vaccine," he told NBC News.On Monday, a third vaccine candidate entered “Phase 3” trials in the US. AstraZeneca is testing its COVID-19 vaccine candidate for 30,000 participants. The AstraZeneca vaccine would come in two separate doses, according to the National Institutes of Health.Even though a vaccine could be ready by year’s end, trials will be expected to continue for over a year to monitor for possible side effects.According to the FDA, a typical Phase 3 trial would take one to three years.“NIH is committed to supporting several Phase 3 vaccine trials to increase the odds that one or more will be effective in preventing COVID-19 and put us on the road to recovery from this devastating pandemic,” said NIH Director Francis S. In a state that has had instances of young black men being shot by police while handling a BB gun, one officer in Ohio was thankful he did not pull the trigger on an 11-year-old he spotted carrying a BB gun. According to the Columbus Division of Police, Officer Peter Casuccio was dispatched to a scene on Saturday to a gun run. When he arrived, Casuccio found an 11-year-old carrying a BB gun as he was walking with a 13-year-old companion. At the scene, Casuccio expressed his frustration that he nearly shot the unidentified 11-year-old. The exchange was captured on Casuccio's police-issued body camera. "This is getting kids killed all over the country," Casuccio said.Casuccio explained to the boy that police got a call of a boy matching the 11-year-old's description holding a gun. "I didn't show anybody it,' I was just holding it like this," the boy said."You can't do that," the officer responded. "That thing looks real.""Do you think I want to shoot an 11-year-old? Do you think I want to shoot a 13-year-old? Do I honestly look like the kind of dude who wants to shoot anybody?" Casuccio said. "But do I look like the type of dude who would shoot somebody?"The boys respond, "Yes, sir." Casuccio then explains the incident to the 11-year-old's mother. "I pulled up and I’m not gonna lie, I drew down on them. He freaks out and he starts to pull the gun out of his waistband," the officer told the mother. "He could have shot you for that, you know that?” the mother could be heard saying. "He dropped it real fast, and I didn't know it was a BB gun until hit the sidewalk," Casuccio said.In recent years, Ohio has had several notable instances of police shooting young black men carrying BB guns as officers believed the weapons were real. Some of those incidents have led to protests in those respective communities. On Aug. 5, 2014, 22-year-old John Crawford III was fatally wounded after he was seen inside a Walmart in Beavercreek, Ohio carrying a BB gun. Officers Sean Williams and David Darkow were not criminally charged in connection to Crawford's death. Three months later in Cleveland, 12-year-old Tamir Rice was seen in a park "pointing a pistol" at people in the park. In the call to police, the witness did state that the weapon was "probably fake." Moments later, Officer Timothy Loehmann fatally wounded Rice. Loehmann was not criminally charged in Rice's death, but was later fired in 2017 after Cleveland Police discovered that he had lied on his job application. The City of Cleveland paid the Rice family a million settlement. In 2016 in Columbus, the same department Casuccio works for, Tyre King, 13, was shot and killed in the back by Officer Bryan Mason after police said King brandished an air gun. Mason was reportedly investigating a robbery at the time of the incident. A grand jury declined to charge Mason criminally for the shooting. There is a pending lawsuit by King's family against the City of Columbus.  3153

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise has been released from a Washington, DC, hospital following a "successful" surgery, according to MedStar Washington Hospital Center.The hospital released a statement Saturday saying the Louisiana Republican was discharged from the hospital and "the planned surgery was successful." The congressman "will be recovering at home for the next several days," the statement added.The congressman's Twitter account also shared the statement. CNN reported earlier this month that Scalise was beginning a "series of planned, inpatient procedures" while continuing to recover from injuries he sustained in a shooting last year.Scalise suffered a gunshot wound last summer when a gunman opened fire at a congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia.In September, Scalise returned to Congress for the first time since the attack, saying at the time that he is "a living example that miracles really do happen."  957
