However, one local company has found a way to deal with these challenges, especially as kids get ready to start a new school year. Brain Balance of San Diego offers a holistic program that specializes in getting to the root of children's challenges."Those challenges might be academically, socially, or behavioral, says office director Amanda Lee. "We see a lot of parents who come in with children struggling with attention, and sensory processing."And at Brain Balance, they stay away from medications. "That just looks at the tip of the iceberg, and is a band-aid."They believe in the power of exercise, with workouts such as jump rope, balance beam, and planks just to give a few examples."It's fantastic for the brain, but the type of exercise we do here is very intentional. It works on very specific areas of the brain, but especially the connections between the different regions which are connected with development, processing, learning, and every day functioning."Many families are now seeing their kids struggle, as they deal with the pandemic and distance learning. "It's just been difficult," says the father of twin girls going through the Brain Balance program. "It's been nice because Brain Balance has been there, with emails as well as checking in with phone calls. But now having schools start with the distance learning, it's going to be hard to gauge them, but I can see they've gained."So what are the red flags to look for in your children? Lee says there are a few. "Are they able to really focus on the lesson at hand, and what about reading? SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities responded to reports of a California Highway Patrol Officer who crashed his motorcycle in Rancho Bernardo Thursday evening. According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the crash happened on northbound I-15 at Rancho Bernardo Road before 6 p.m. At this time, the cause of the crash is unknown. It’s also unknown whether or not the officer was injured in the crash. 416

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – As more people are being hospitalized with COVID-19 across Southern California, some health care systems worry that lack of hospital staffing could become a big issue.“We’ve got to take care of our health care workers, or we’re not going to have them to take care of the patients,” said Meghan Jaremczuk, a registered nurse and the Director of Progressive and Acute Care at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido.Like many health care workers this year, Jaremczuk hasn’t had a break. She’s been taking care of COVID-19 patients throughout the pandemic.“Other people have been working from home, we're not, we're here, we're in it,” she said. “It’s been hard because this has been going on for a long time and people are tired, but they're still showing up. You're seeing people that can't be with their loved ones, visitors are very, very restricted. They can Facetime with their families and things like that, but it’s not the same.”The County of San Diego reported an additional 15 deaths related to COVID-19 on Wednesday and a 62 percent increase in the number of COVID-19 hospitalized patients in a two week period.The Federal Medical Station set up at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido has 202 beds for non-ICU patients ready to go when needed, according to Palomar Health CEO Diane Hansen.Hansen said the health care system has the ability to expand the dedicated 48 ICU beds to 110 ICU beds if needed, but said making sure enough health care workers are available is one of the bigger issues at this point.“We do have capacity. We're seeing on average about 50 patients per day less than what we normally see this time of year,” said Hansen. “While we have capacity, my biggest concern is our ability to staff beds should the pandemic surge become greater.”“Staffing is a concern because not every nurse can take care of every kind of patient,” said Jaremczuk.Jaremczuk is most worried about the rapid rate of community spread. She said if nurses become sick, hospital operations could be disrupted.While she understands many people are tired of constantly being told to mask up, wash their hands and avoid gatherings, she’s urging everyone to continue to follow the health guidelines to protect those who are giving their all to save lives.“The patients also make an impact on our lives, we make connections and it's meaningful,” she said. “If we get exposed, if we get sick, we can't come to work and take care of patients.” 2459

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Businesses are bracing for Governor Gavin Newsom's announcement Monday after San Diego has been on the state's watch-list since July 3, due to a surge in coronavirus cases.Newsom could announce indoor activities, like arcades, restaurant dining, movie theaters and museums will be shut down to contain the spread.This news comes as San Diego restaurants faced a volley of changes over the past four months."I think that the only thing that is constant is the change," Chief Brewing Officer Mike Hess said from his Imperial Beach brewery.He said the lucky thing about most of his locations is they have outdoor space, so they can shift more easily. He said in one pay period his labor costs at the Imperial Beach location are three times the norm because they switched from bar service to table service and have to sanitize more often.Across town at Small Bar, Owner Karen Barnett said they shut down at the beginning of July and don't have any plans to reopen.'At the end of the day a business is a business, people are more important.' Barnett said they have been doing take out since the beginning of the pandemic, but never reopened for dine in.She said the small space at her business and horror stories of other restaurants and bars dealing with enforcing social distancing, wearing a mask and employees testing positive with the virus, helped her stick to her guns.On Friday, she posted this on Instagram, "After much consideration, Small Bar will be closing for the entire month of July (possibly longer). When the global pandemic was declared almost 4 months ago, we decided to quickly switch gears and continue to serve our community as thoughtfully and safely as possible. Unfortunately, Americans both near and far don't seem to be listening as closely to science as we are. We no longer deem our services "essential". We care about our community and feel the best move right now is to take a step back for a few weeks. In the meantime, we will be working on our footprint and how we can safely reopen later. We encourage more businesses to follow our lead to help flatten the curve, yet again. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities have identified the sailor who died after being struck by a spinning helicopter blade as 32-year-old Lt. James Mazzuchelli.Mazzuchelli was a flight surgeon assigned to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 267, Marine Aircraft Group 39 and was stationed at MCAS Camp Pendleton.Mazzuchelli is from Orange Park, Florida and was previously deployed to Japan.RELATED: Sailor hit by spinning helicopter blade at MCAS Camp Pendleton dies“Lt. James Mazzuchelli was an incredibly talented physician and Sailor,” said Col. His willingness to join the Navy and elect to serve faithfully with the Marines should give a sense of pride to all of us who serve our country that we are surrounded by heroes every day.
