SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) — Searchers are combing a section of the San Bernardino Mountains for signs of a missing off-duty firefighter. The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department says the search Saturday is focusing on an area of Highway 18 where Carlos Baltazar’s car was located by the California Highway Patrol on Sept. 20. Baltazar is a member of a U.S. Forest Service Interagency Hotshot Crew. He was reported missing by family members on Sept. 24. At the time, he was off duty and not in the area of the El Dorado Fire in the San Bernardino National Forest. Another hotshot, Charles Morton, died while fighting that fire on Sept. 17. 654

SAN DIEGO — Democratic Congressman Mike Levin has opened a commanding 20-point lead over Republican challenger Brian Maryott in coastal North County's 49th district, according to a new scientific poll.The ABC-10News Union-Tribune poll shows Levin leading Maryott 56 percent to 36 percent, with the remainder undecided. It's an increase over the 49 percent to 37 percent lead Levin had over Maryott in a prior poll taken in mid-September. The district stretches from Del Mar into parts of southern Orange County."It's all over but the shouting," said political analyst John Dadian, who said the district has become increasingly democratic over the last 15 years. "It was getting bluer gradually, and now, the last election cycle and I believe this one, we're going to see the fruit come to bear."Levin won the 49th District seat in 2018 after Republican Darrell Issa decided not to seek re-election after nearly two decades. Issa is now running for Congress in east county's 50th District, which leans Republican. "We've seen a lot of the communities that have shifted to more in the democratic party since 2016 are these more suburban, well-educated communities like many of the communities in California's 49th," said Stephen Goggin, a lecturer in the political science department at San Diego State University. The poll of 514 likely voters shows Levin getting the support of 68 percent of independents, with Maryott, a San Juan Capistrano councilman, getting just 15 percent of them. Both are getting the bulk of their backing from their own parties. In an interview Tuesday, Levin said he was not taking anything for granted, and that the only poll that matters is the one on election day. "This is the home stretch of an election, all hands on deck, leave no stone unturned. That's the only way I know and that's what we're going to do over the next three weeks," Levin said. Maryott's campaign released a statement saying the race is much closer than what this poll shows. "We see it firsthand, on a daily basis: as more voters uncover Mike Levin’s extreme record, support for Brian Maryott increases significantly. We put our trust in the voters, not polls," the statement said. The SurveyUSA poll reports that 13 percent of respondents already voted, and 63 percent are 100 percent they will. It also shows Joe Biden defeating President Trump in the district, 56 percent to 39 percent. SurveyUSA surveyed 650 voting-age individuals from Oct. 8 to Oct. 12. 2472

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 22-year-old man was stabbed early today and he walked into a Kerny Mesa hotel for help.The stabbing was reported at 2:05 a.m. in the 5400 block of Kearny Mesa Road, according to San Diego police Officer Robert Heims.The wounded man walked into the lobby of the Marriott hotel to get help, Heims said.The victim was taken to a hospital for a stab wound in his body that is not believed life-threatening, he said.He described his assailant as a bald male, about 6 feet tall, with tattoos. SAN DIEGO — Among the safety measures schools are now employing is a device invented by a retired San Diego teacher that was never designed for the use.Rick Morris taught elementary school for three decades before leaving to focus on books to help educators with inventions.In 2005, Morris designed the Lock Blok, an updated version of a device he invented in the 80s. Applied with an adhesive, a rubber tab is affixed to the door and can be pushed out, again acting like a stopper. It was designed to cut down on noisy door slams in class.Morris said after the Columbine shooting, schools started using the Lock Blok for safety.  Most class doors have to be locked from the outside. With Morris' invention, teachers could just keep the door locked all day, even with the Lock Blok engaged. In an active shooter situation, the tab is pulled back, while the door shuts and is automatically locked.Security experts tell us during a true emergency, fine motor reflexes becomes tested. If a teacher has to go outside and try to lock the door with a key, it could take precious seconds.  Over the years, some 8000 Lock Blok units have been installed by local schools.  "My reaction is if this is helping to make a campus more secure, good for you, but don't put all your hope in one device. Security is bigger than that," said Morris.Morris doesn't market Lock Blok as a safety measure because it wasn't designed for protection, but after a November shooting rampage at a Northern California school, he can't forget the call he got from that district's superintendent."My wife and I teared up on that one ... SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A bill that would keep court hearings related to the release of Sexually Violent Predators open to the public was unveiled Tuesday by a state senator who worked with the San Diego County District Attorney's Office to craft the legislation.SB 1023, dubbed the Sexually Violent Predator Act, would prohibit proceedings related to Sexually Violent Predators -- or SVPs -- from being held behind closed doors, particularly when the hearings involve potentially releasing the offenders to a conditional housing program in the community.Recently, hearings regarding the proposed release and placement of SVP Alvin Ray Quarles, 57, otherwise known as the "Bolder-Than-Most" rapist, were held behind closed doors in San Diego County Superior Court.Judge David Gill kept the hearings under wraps due to privacy concerns over the potential disclosure of Quarles' psychiatric reports.The closed-door nature of the hearings drew protests from victims' advocates, include two of Quarles' victims, Mary Taylor and Cynthia Medina.Sen. Patricia Bates, R-Laguna Niguel, who authored SB 1023, issued a joint statement with San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan, saying SVP hearings should be held in open court "unless compelling and extraordinary circumstances justify closing the courtroom to the public.""District Attorney Summer Stephan and I believe that court hearings for sexually violent predators should be open to the public unless a judge can provide a compelling reason," Bates said. "Victims, their families, and the public have a legitimate interest in witnessing hearings through which a predator might be released."Gill ruled last year that Quarles should be released to a conditional housing program, though that decision is currently being appealed by the District Attorney's Office.Quarles, who was previously sentenced to 50 years in prison for committing more than a dozen sexual assaults in the mid-to-late 1980s, was slated to be housed at a residence in Jacumba Hot Springs, but that agreement fell through."This important legislation supports the principles of democracy and transparency in our justice system by making sure court hearings for sexually violent predators are open to the public," Stephan said. "As District Attorney, I hear the pain from victims who've been terrorized by a sexual predator but are left in the dark and not able to learn pertinent information guaranteed to them by our open courts system."The bill is awaiting referral to a Senate policy committee, Bates' staff said. 2544
