HONG KONG, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- The Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China displayed a scale model of its jetliner C919,the country's first home-grown large commercial airliner, for the first time at the Asian Aerospace '09 on Tuesday. With a scale of one to ten, the model was so far "the most precise one put up for public display," said Guo Bozhi, president of the Shanghai Aircraft Design and Research Institute, a unit of the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, or COMAC.     The mockup was displayed at a prominent position at the Asian Aerospace, Asia's leading air show, side by side with industry giants like Boeing and Airbus. Together with some ten other Chinese mainland-based manufacturers, suppliers and service providers at the show, it attracted attention of media from around the world. It is expected to enter service in 2016    "It's the first time that China has put a face in front of the global aviation industry," said Richard Thiele, global head of sales for Reed Exhibitions, organizer of the show.     COMAC has currently sent out requests for proposal, or RPFs, to over 100 potential suppliers, both domestic and international, and signed memorandums of understanding with nine domestic airframe suppliers. The company has been in touch with engine suppliers including General Electric, Rolls Royce and Pratt&Whitney, Guo said. It has a registered capital of 19 billion yuan (2.78 billion U.S. dollars), with the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission as the biggest shareholder.     The company has said the maiden flight of C919 was planned for late 2014, with delivery expected by 2016. It was intended as a single-aisle airliner to target the short and medium haul markets in eight to ten years from now, Wang said.     If successful, COMAC plans to produce 50 C919 aircraft each year at the early stage and annual production could reach 100 or even more at a later stage, depending on how it is received by the market, Guo said. It has a designed capacity of 168 seats for the full economy class version and 156 seats for mixed class version.     Wang said China has been behind leading industry players in commercial airliner development and is aspiring to have its own home-made large commercial airliner.     COMAC plans to develop the C919 under the cooperation model involving suppliers and main manufacturers, and international partnership are welcome, he said.

PYONGYANG, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Kim Jong Il, top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), on Monday attended a grand celebration marking the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations and the closing ceremony of the China-DPRK Friendship Year.     In a speech delivered at the May Day Stadium in Pyongyang, Premier Wen said China and the DPRK have understood, supported and helped each other during the past 60 years despite changes in the international situation.     The ruling parties and peoples of China and the DPRK have steadily promoted the development of the bilateral ties, contributing to regional peace and stability, Wen said.     This year marks the China-DPRK Friendship Year, featuring a variety of celebrations and events of exchanges, which have enhanced the friendship between the two countries, strengthened cooperation in various fields and injected new vitality into the bilateral ties, Wen said.     Currently, China-DPRK relations have arrived at a new historic point, he said.     China is ready to join hands with the DPRK to further consolidate and develop the traditional friendship, expand friendly exchanges and cooperation to better serve the well-being of both peoples, and make greater contribution to regional peace and stability, he noted.     DPRK Premier Kim Yong Il, who also attended the event, said the establishment of DPRK-China relations 60 years ago was an epoch-making event and the DPRK is firmly determined to consolidate and develop the DPRK-China friendship.     The events marking the China-DPRK Friendship Year have effectively promoted the friendship and trust between the two peoples, he said.     The DPRK is ready to make joint efforts with China to further the friendly, cooperative relations, he said.     During the celebration, the leaders watched the grand gymnastic and artistic performance "Arirang" presented by DPRK artists.  

MONROVIA, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Ambassador to Liberia Zhou Yuxiao has said his country is a responsible and faithful member of the United Nations and it respects the resolutions adopted by the world body.     In a weekend interview with Xinhua, Ambassador Zhou expressed his confidence that the Chinese peacekeepers serving within the United Nations Mission in Liberia would remain in the country up to 2011 when the Liberians would go to polls to elect a new president.     The ambassador said the Chinese peacekeepers here in Liberia are working under the leadership and guidance of the UN mission.     "As far as I know, the United Nations has decided that UNMIL (the United Nations Mission in Liberia) will stay in Liberia until 2011, and supporting Liberian general election is part of UNMIL mandate."     Ambassador Zhou said there could be a small reduction in the size of the Chinese peacekeeping forces in the country, but the troops would remain in Liberia to provide the needed support up to2011 under the UN Mission.     "As part of the UN Peacekeeping force, the Chinese peacekeepers will certainly play its role in supporting the next elections," he said.     The current Chinese peacekeepers are drawn up in three contingents namely medical, transportation and engineering. He said during the Liberian forthcoming elections, obviously the electoral authority will need transportation support which the Chinese unit can assist with.     Ambassador Zhou said although China does not have a combat troop in the mission, but he is confident that the three contingents can play a positive role in the peacekeeping efforts as well as in supporting the forthcoming elections.     "China has always supported the UN endeavors in maintaining peace and stability in Liberia and my view is that the peacekeeping operation in Liberia has so far been successful and we should allow it to stay so," he added.

PHUKET, Thailand, July 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi underlined here Wednesday the importance of tapping new areas of economic growth so as to enhance cooperation between China and the Association of Southeast Asia Nations (ASEAN).     Yang noted that one area of development is to implement plans to enhance agricultural productivity by drawing on advanced technology and to accelerate the cooperation on new and renewable energies. The ASEAN-China Foreign Ministers' Meeting is held in Phuket, Thailand, on July 22, 2009."We have maintained high-level exchanges, enhanced political mutual trust, shared development experience and strengthened confidence in cooperation," Yang said at the China-ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting on Wednesday afternoon.     China and ASEAN have completed negotiations on the China-ASEAN Investment Agreement, paving the way for the full establishment of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (CAFTA) in 2010.     The ASEAN on Monday appreciated China's active role in developing transportation infrastructure between the two sides and welcomed the establishment of the 10 billion U.S. dollar fund for bilateral investment cooperation.     In April, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said that China has decided to set up a 10 billion U.S. dollar "China-ASEAN Fund on Investment Cooperation" to support infrastructural development in the region. 

BEIJING, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong has asked schools to educate students comprehensively about national unity during recent a tour to the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.     Liu said teachers should play a guiding role in helping students become "forceful practitioners, loyal promulgators, and strong guards" of national unity.     Great efforts should be made to develop education, science and technology, and culture in Xinjiang, Liu said. She called for contributions toward building a prosperous, affluent and harmonious socialist Xinjiang.     During the tour Liu visited educational institutes, cultural organizations and a company engaged in renewable energy.
