SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The City of San Diego declared Thursday, August 6, as "Officer Jonathan Wiese Day."Wiese was the San Diego police officer who saved two-year-old twin girls after their father drove off Sunset Cliffs in June. The officer also saved the girls' father from the water.On Thursday, a proclamation was read and presented during a virtual Rancho Bernardo Community Council meeting.Wiese said he didn't rescue the girls for recognition, but said it was nice to see community support.The rescue happened early in the morning on June 13. Wiese, a K-9 officer, rappelled off a cliff using his 100-foot long dog leash to help.Wiese told 10News he is actually scared of heights and was thankful that it was dark the morning of the rescue.He joked that his wife told him he wouldn't have to wash the dishes on his day and that he hoped he'd get a free cup of coffee.Wiese was also the officer that helped take the suspected Poway Synagogue shooter into custody in April 2019. 989

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The door-to-door salesman accused of taking swings at a Pacific Beach woman and a string of threatening outbursts while canvassing neighborhoods is behind bars.An arrest warrant was issued on Dec. 6, 2019, for 45-year-old Corey Lamont Terry on felony charges of making criminal threats and attempted burglary, according to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office. According to San Diego Police, Terry was arrested by Sheriff's deputies on Jan. 9. He is currently being held on 0,000 bail.RELATED: Woman records confrontation with man claiming to be charity worker Police had been investigating Terry since November 2019 after several San Diegans complained of his aggressive language while he solicited money door-to-door, SDPD Lt. Shawn Takeuchi told 10News. Terry had reportedly been visiting neighborhoods in Pacific Beach and Ocean Beach, claiming to be raising money for charity.Several people told 10News he would become aggressive when he was denied donations."He chases me across the street, screaming that he's going to kill me," Sarah Jarzabek told 10News. "Scared to death, honestly."Jarzabek recorded video of a confrontation with Terry on Nov. 2, 2019. SDPD positively identified the man who reportedly swung at Jarzabek as Terry. He was detained and questioned the next day, but ultimately released.“It’s a little bit concerning he’s still out there,” said John Christenson, an Ocean Beach resident who said he encountered Terry on Oct. 16, 2019. “Basically said that he did want to knock me out, was getting in my face, calling me all kinds of names. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The National Weather Service says that conditions are in place for a La Ni?a weather pattern in the fall and winter of 2020-21. That could bring warmer, drier than usual weather to San Diego over the next few months.By definition, La Ni?a happens when the water along the equator is colder than usual. That pushes the jet stream farther north and directs storms away from the Pacific Southwest region of the United States.Because of that, Southern California typically sees less rain during La Ni?a years."What that means for everyone is that our winters can be variable, meaning they can be all or nothing," explains National Weather Service Meteorologist Alex Tardy. "It doesn't necessarily result in more or less rain, though. You just have a very inconsistent winter in general with a La Ni?a pattern like we're seeing developed now."The numbers bear that out. According to the San Diego County Water Authority, San Diego averages 10.34 inches of rain every year, with most of it falling from December through February.But in La Ni?a years, the rainfall is usually below average. During La Ni?a in 2018, San Diego only saw 3.34 inches. A La Ni?a in 2017 brought 12.73 inches. La Ni?as in 2017 and 2012 got 8.18 and 7.90 inches of rain, respectively."The bulk of the historical cases have been somewhat below average," says Dan Cayan from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. "It's 10 to maybe 30% below what we would normally achieve in those in those core winter months."That's bad news for firefighters across California. Already this year, the state has set records for wildfire disasters, with 7,982 wildfires burning more than 3.6 million acres. A dry, warm fall and winter will prolong wildfire season."That's not a real welcome signal for us here in Southern California, particularly after this extended dry period and heatwaves," says Cayan. "A wetter winter this next year would have been a welcome relief. But the roll of the statistical dice right now does not look like they're in our favor."Tardy puts it more bluntly."We are a tinderbox," he says. "We're looking at fuel moisture that is not just dry the way it should be, but it is record dry."La Ni?a weather also brings more Santa Ana winds, which can help wildfires spread. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The family of a YouTube star who drove his McLaren the wrong way on the 805 last year, killing a mom and her daughter, are suing the City of San Diego, County of San Diego, and the Psychiatric Emergency Response Team (PERT).The lawsuit claims the “horrific and tragic event” was entirely preventable.Eighteen-year-old Trevor Heitmann, known as McSkillet, drove his McLaren the wrong way on the freeway in August 2018, killing Aileen Pizarro and her 12-year-old daughter Aryana. The sports car collided with the family's SUV, which burst into flames.RELATED: Autopsy details mental state of McSkillet before deadly crash on Interstate 805 in San DiegoIn the lawsuit Heitmann's family claims "SDPD was warned by Plaintiff's on the day of, but before his death, that Trevor intended to drive his McLaren at a high rate of speed in the wrong direction on a public roadway, under the delusion that he (Trevor) could drive through vehicles traveling in the opposite direction without incident."Worried about their sons' dangerous intentions and fearing for his well-being, as well as the safety of others, Dr. Mary Rusher, a board-certified psychiatrist, called 911 and made a 5150 request for a psychiatric hold, the lawsuit alleges.The lawsuit claims, "Defendants' purported PERT response team conducted either or both no assessment or the wrong assessment of the mental health status of Plaintiffs' son Trevor, pursuant to and under California Welfare and Institutions Code 5150."RELATED: YouTuber's parents requested psychiatric evaluation before deadly I-805 crashIt alleges, defendants also failed and refused requests to take Heitmann into protective detention to transport him to a designated evaluation and treatment facility."As a consequence, and despite Plaintiffs' attempts to ensure their son's safety and the safety of others by blocking the driveway of their residents, Trevor later that day left his residence and drive the McLaren to the Interstate 805 Freeway where he was killed in the beforementioned collision, which also tragically took the lives of the Pizarros."A spokesman for the County of San Diego told 10News they couldn't comment.RELATED: Son remembers mother and sister after release of driver's autopsy in deadly 805 crashAs of this writing, officials with the City of San Diego and PERT have not responded to 10News requests for comment.This is the third lawsuit filed regarding the 2018 crash.
