On World Autism Awareness Day, Monday, April 2, Pennsylvania theme park Sesame Place announced that it was the first theme park in the world to complete training to become a Certified Autism Center (CAC). The park's certification was granted by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES). IBCCES says that Sesame Place is "the first theme park in the world to receive such a distinction."Sesame Place is located at 100 Sesame Road in Langhorne, Pennsylvania. The park features rides, shows, parades, and full size characters and opens for the season on April 28 at 10:00 a.m.The Sesame team members were trained in sensory awareness, motor skills, autism overview, program development, social skills, communication, environment, and emotional awareness, so that staff members can cater to all guests who visit the park. One of the most helpful outcomes of this certification is the IBCCES?Sensory Guide, which breaks down each of the rides' stimuli. This guide grades the rides in terms of touch, taste, sound, smell, and sight stimulation. The senses are scored from 1, which is a low stimulation, to 10, which is a high stimulation. The park has quiet rooms for guests needing to recover from sensory stimulation from the rides. They also have noise-canceling headphones, or WhispEars, on a first come, first served basis for guests with hearing sensitivity. The park has special areas people can go to and still enjoy parades, without being overwhelmed with direct character interaction. Guests can also take pictures with Julia, a Sesame Street character with autism. Additional resources include Autism Travel, which can help parents explore travel options, and a workshop called See Amazing in All Children, which offers tips to simplify daily life and grow support in the community.Sesame Place has many more options to accommodate with guests needs. Click HERE to learn more. The park's website states, "It is our goal to provide every family with an enjoyable and memorable visit to Sesame Place, and we are proud to offer specialized services to guests with autism and other special needs." 2172

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- Five Oceanside lifeguards will receive the Medal of Valor for saving a man buried in rocks on the Del Mar Jetty last October. On October 7, 2017, the lifeguards received a call about someone stranded after his vessel capsized due to a wave. When lifeguards arrived, they found the watercraft upside down on the rocks but were unable to locate the man. After more lifeguards were called to the scene, they found the operator of the vessel buried in the rocks.Lifeguards worked quickly to free the man due to the impact of the relentless surf. More rescue units from the Oceanside Fire Department and Oceanside Police Department were called to the scene and eventually freed the man.The victim was taken to the hospital where he was treated for his injuries and released. 812

Oceanside’s Flying Pig restaurant had a wait for tables last Friday. On the surface, that sounds like a dream scenario. But owner Roddy Browning says sales just didn't match the demand.“Our capacity is just cut so much, there's just no room for that heavyweight labor when you don't have the capacity,” he said. It's because of social distancing restrictions.Browning recently reopened The Flying Pig and his Vista restaurant - Town Hall Public House - with seating cut in about half. He's working his way back after having to layoff much of his staff when Coronavirus restrictions first took effect. In all Browning had about 60 employees at his two restaurants before COVID.Now, he's hired about 25.He says challenges go beyond the finances.Browning says he and other restaurant owners are having trouble filling jobs in the back of the house. And there have been isolated incidents where people have refused requests to wear masks - taking their money elsewhere.Browning says he wants people to understand why masks are required. As for surviving, Browning says he'll just have to make it work. 1099

Oklahoma teachers say they have reached their breaking point over pay and school funding and may walk off the job next month.Galvanized by a growing social media campaign, teachers wanted competitive pay to attract and keep teachers in the state. Teachers were hoping for a ,000 raise with House Bill 1033, collectively called the Step Up Oklahoma Plan, which looked to increase the tax on tobacco and gas. However, that bill was voted down in the state House because it didn't get the 75% approval needed to pass, according to Oklahoma Department of Education Superintendent Joy Hofmeister."It was soul-crushing," Hofmeister said.Because of that, and a handful of other failed bills in the last two to three years, teachers are now actively discussing a strike, on the heels of a statewide strike by public teachers in West Virginia."What spurred this momentum was so many teachers across the state are at their wit's end," said Teresa Danks, a third-grade teacher in Tulsa who is also the founder of the nonprofit Begging for Education. "No bills have been passed in favor of teacher pay or funding, the frustration and low morale has continued to grow. We're losing teachers like crazy to other states."One of the authors of HB 1033, Republican Sen. Kim David, did not reply to CNN's request for comment. The legislative assistant for the other author, Republican Rep. Kevin Wallace, said the request for comment was forwarded to the state speaker of the house. The speaker has not replied.Empty promises? 1522
