BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- President Hu Jintao on Thursday urged the Chinese army to carry forward the courageous spirit it had shown in the earthquake relief work earlier this year to better serve the people.     Hu, also the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee general secretary and Central Military Commission chairman, made the remark here while meeting soldiers and officers who were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the disaster relief work.     On Wednesday, China held a ceremony to honor outstanding organizations and individuals for their contributions to the rescue and relief work after a catastrophic earthquake hit the southwestern Sichuan and some neighboring provinces on May 12, leaving more than 87,000 dead or missing.     The People's Liberation Army (PLA) troops and armed police were among the first to provide rescue and relief following the quake. BEIJING, April 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met here on Thursday with ex-French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin, and urged the French government to work with China to put bilateral relations on a healthy and stable track.     Wen said France was the first Western power to forge diplomatic relations with China, and also the first European Union (EU) member state to set up a comprehensive strategic partnership with China.     China valued its friendship with France, which was fostered by leaders of several generations from both nations and by the two peoples, Wen said. BEIJING, July 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Wednesday paid a morale-boosting visit to domestic athletes busy training for the upcoming Olympic Games, saying he was looking forward to their good performances.     With 16 days to go until the Games opening ceremony, Hu, accompanied by Vice President Xi Jinping, went to the stadiums of the Training Bureau of the General Administration of Sport in southern Beijing in the morning. He watched training programs of athletes in gymnastics artistic, synchronized swimming, table tennis, weightlifting, basketball and volleyball. A bright green covering of algae smothered beaches and extended out several hundred meters. BEIJING, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- China and Venezuela on Wednesday inked a series of agreements on wide-ranging fields, a sign of bilateral efforts to advance their strategic partnership to a new high.     The agreements came out of the summit talks in the Great Hall of the People as Beijing rolled out the red carpet for Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.     The 12 new cooperative deals covered trade, oil, finance, education, justice, telecommunications, infrastructure, sports and cultural relics. Wu said China's National People's Congress, the country's top legislature, would like to maintain its friendly exchanges and cooperation with the Venezuelan legislature, boosting the overall bilateral ties.     Chavez will conclude his three-day state visit to China on Thursday.
