There’s a new trend in engagement rings.Instead of a diamond ring around your finger, a diamond is embedded in your finger.“We notice lately a lot of people coming looking for that,” Sam Abbas, who owns NYC Ink Studio in the West Village, told Hsu.Apparently, some millennials are ditching the usual engagement ring and instead piercing their ring fingers.“I think it looks nice, but if you really think what it’s doing to the body – and you can have scarring – it’s so many complications that can happen from it,” Cynthia Rivas said.Abbas said there could be problems if the person doesn’t take care of the piercing, such as cleaning it two to three times a day and making sure the piercing artist has experience.“You’re dealing with the blood, so you got to be very, very safe,” he said. “What we do, we sterilize everything.”A piercing artist marks the spot with a pen, cleans with alcohol and iodine, uses a tool to remove a small patch of skin, and then inserts an anchor made of titanium or gold, which holds the gem, Hsu reported. The whole process takes about 10 minutes and costs around 0 for the piercing. The diamond you choose is a separate cost.As for the pain?“You’re going to feel it. You’re getting pierced. It is a little bit painful. But people did it, and I have a lot of people who say, ‘Oh nice, it’s nothing, I expect more,” said Abbas.Dermatologist Dr. Monica Halem told Hsu she has some concerns.“First of all, these procedures are not being done by a doctor, and it is a surgical procedure,” she said. “There are a lot of important structures that sit right under the skin there that can easily be damaged, like tendons.”There’s also the danger of the diamond snagging.“That’s sitting right above the skin, that’s easily caught on something and can do a lot of damage,” said Halem. She said you should think carefully before going for the new trend.Healing from this kind of piercing can take up to 20 weeks. If you want the diamond removed, that’s possible but more painful than the initial piercing. 2035

To truly understand a disaster’s mark, step through its remains with those whose lives it's ripped apart."The fire affected everyone," said Gladis Garcia. "You're white, you're Latino, whatever you are, that doesn't matter."The final views from Garcia’s house were of wildfire flames closing in on your neighborhood in September. The flames would take her home and much of her small town of Phoenix, Oregon. She stands by what was her doorstep, searching for belongings buried in the ash, with Virginia Camberos by her side.“I would be lying if I say I’m doing alright," Camberos said.Camberos’ home survived the wildfire, but many in the Latino community she advocates for, lost everything.“The way that I find my strength is I believe there is something better for us," she said. While strength can take time, Election Day here waits for no one."How are we going to get the ballots?" Camberos asked. "How are we going to get to the homes? I mean, you see all this destruction and devastation."Oregon mailed ballots to addresses as clean-up continued, creating potential challenges for those now without homes or mailboxes, like Erica Ramirez."To me, it was worth a lot," Ramirez said of her home of 13 years that burned into a pile of metal. The state provided a website to help answer questions for voters displaced by the flames. The fire has taken so much, but not her right as an American citizen to vote in her first presidential election."I am going to vote until God gives me life and strength to do so," she said.Ramirez had her ballot sent to a temporary address, which is legal in Oregon, a process helping many voters who are unsure of where they will live next. For Camberos, as an organizer with Unite Oregon, her focus is on making sure this area’s large Latino population is heard. She says many Latino voters will be casting ballots for the first time. She posted voter information fliers across the area in both English and Spanish."It's important to connect with my community and to say, ‘We are fighting for our lives right now. We need to make change,’” she said.Change is on the minds of many impacted by the fire.“I personally believe in climate change, said Ramon De La Cruz, who lost his home of 16 years in the fire."It was very difficult seeing all of this.”His story is of the kind of loss that is now all too common across the West, but amid the rubble and pain is hope some of the worst wildfires in U.S. history won’t stop Americans here from using their power to write the next chapter."These are issues that are going to affect you, or maybe not even you, but maybe your children or the next generation," Camberos said. 2656

Time is running out with just five days to go before funding expires for several key federal agencies and no deal in sight to avert a partial government shutdown. On Capitol Hill, Republicans and Democrats alike have made clear they don't want a shutdown, but lawmakers left Washington last week without a resolution in an ongoing standoff over funding for President Donald Trump's long-promised border wall. The administration and congressional Democrats appeared to be no closer to reaching an agreement over the weekend.White House senior adviser Stephen Miller said on Sunday the administration would do "whatever is necessary to build the border wall," saying "if it comes to it, absolutely," when asked on CBS's "Face the Nation" if that would mean a partial shutdown. But Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer insisted on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday that the President is "not going to get the wall in any form," saying the votes aren't there in the House or the Senate. The window is narrow this week for Congress to take action. The Senate will be back on Monday, but the House of Representatives isn't expected to return until Wednesday evening. That leaves little time before funding runs out at midnight on Friday for a number of federal agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security, the Justice Department, and other parts of the government.Trump wants billion in wall funding, but that number is a non-starter for Democrats. Any spending legislation would need to pass with at least some Democratic votes since it would have to clear a 60-vote threshold in the Senate where Republicans only have a 51-seat majority. Some congressional Republicans were talking openly at the end of last week about the possibility that lawmakers could punt the border fight by passing a temporary, stopgap spending measure. If Congress and the White House agree to a short-term funding patch that could leave the issue for the new, incoming Congress to resolve in January.Outgoing Republican Rep. Jeff Denham of California told CNN's Kate Bolduan on Friday, "At this late in the game, I think a short-term resolution is in order, something that would allow the next Congress to actually come in and negotiate a much larger, longer agreement.""The question is ... will we kick the can until the day after Christmas, January 2nd or 3rd, or whatever?," Republican Sen. Richard Shelby, the chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, told CNN on Thursday. "I don't know. There has to be some sort of breakthrough."So far, however, there has been no apparent breakthrough, and the threat of a partial shutdown moves closer to becoming a reality with each passing day.The President defiantly said during a dramatic meeting last week with House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi and Schumer that he would take responsibility for a partial shutdown if one takes place."I'll tell you what, I am proud to shut down the government for border security, Chuck," Trump told the top Senate Democrat. "So, I will take the mantle. I will be the one to shut it down. I'm not going to blame you for it."If a shutdown takes place, it would be limited in scope. Congress has already funded roughly 75% of the federal government through September 2019, including the Pentagon as well as the Departments of Health and Human Services and Labor. But that doesn't mean a partial shutdown that would start just days before Christmas wouldn't be disruptive. In the event of a shutdown, some federal employees would be deemed essential and would continue to work, but their pay would be withheld until the shutdown is over.Other federal employees would be placed on furlough, meaning they would effectively be put on a leave of absence without pay. Congress could move to order that furloughed employees be paid retroactively after the shutdown is over, but that is not guaranteed. 3870
