GUANGZHOU, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- China's southwestern Yunnan and Guizhou provinces agreed Monday to transmit 497 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity to the southern Guangdong Province over the next five years.The agreements were signed Monday between the China Southern Power Grid Company (CSG) and the three provinces.Due to a lack of resources such as coal and water, the relatively more developed eastern and southern regions in China face pressure of providing enough electricity to boost their growth."China's coal resources are mainly based in the west and north, while water is also abundant in the southwestern regions. The uneven situation makes it necessary to transmit power from the west to the east," said Qian Zhimin, deputy director of China's National Energy Administration.Qian said China had initiated the west-to-east power transmission program back in 2000. By the end of this year, the CSG has transmitted over 543 billion kilowatt-hours of power through the program.Guangdong, an economic powerhouse in south China, with a gross domestic product exceeding 3.9 trillion yuan (about 583.3 billion U.S. dollars) in 2009, has been the largest beneficiary of the program as almost 120 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity produced in other western provinces is used by Guangdong annually, making up about one-fourth of all the power it uses every year.The CSG is one of China's two major grid operators, along with the State Grid. NANJING, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- A kindergarten teacher who reportedly burned seven children using a hot iron on Tuesday has been detained for 10 days by police and fired from her teaching position in east China's Jiangsu Province, said local authorities on Saturday.The teacher, surnamed Yi, 30, of Banqiao Kindergarten of Xinghua City, said that "she did not know the iron was still hot when she used it to discipline the children," according to information released at a press conference held by the city government.The seven children were slightly burned on the face. BEIJING, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- China said on Tuesday it would punish six companies, including affiliates of the country's two oil giants, for selling diesel above the state-set prices, in an effort to ease the diesel shortage and keep soaring prices in check.The companies, including Sinopec's units in Wuhan and Luoyang, and PetroChina's Wuhan unit, were selling diesel at prices as high as 8 percent above the government set price, according to a statement posted on the website of National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the country's top economic planner.These companies also included local refineries and oil dealers in Shaanxi, Shandong and Jiangsu provinces and according to the NDRC, the acts have exacerbated the diesel shortage and disrupted market order.The commission urged local authorities to seize the illicit revenue from above-ceiling sales and fine the companies up to five-times of their income.To relieve domestic diesel shortages, both Sinopec and PetroChina are increasing diesel imports, while Sinopec said last week it had even suspended diesel exports.According to customs statistics, China's diesel imports in October rose to 400,000 tonnes, surging 60 percent compared with that in September.

WUHAN, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- The fire in a residential area in Wuhan, capital of central China's Hubei Province, was put out Tuesday morning and no casualties were reported, local authorities said.The fire started at around 11 p.m. Monday from the first floor of a four-storey building in Qiaokou District, according to the city's fire control department.The building's first floor was a food market and more than 20 people lived upstairs. Most of them managed to escape after the fire started.More than 200 fire fighters had been dispatched to contain the blaze. Fire fighters rescued six from the building, including an old man and a child.The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
