BEIJING, July 9 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari on Friday expressed his optimism over the possible road link with China, saying the construction of the road would boost bilateral trade.Zardari is on his five-day working visit to China, the fifth China tour since he took office as the Pakistani president in 2008. Zardari who once called himself "the first businessman president of Pakistan", said that he had his own "concept" for improving Pakistan-China trade relations.A road connection with China is one of his ideas to make this happen."If you want to come to Pakistan or southeast Asia from China by sea, it will take months, but if you look at the road transportation to my port, it's only 1,100 miles from your border," said Zardari in an interview with Xinhua.Zardari's remarks came amid some reports that China and Pakistan are considering building a rail link to reach the Arabian Sea."The concept has been accepted," said Zardari without elaborating.China and Pakistan have maintained their "all-weathered" and time-tested friendship for decades. Now there are more than 120 companies and about 10,000 Chinese nationals in Pakistan, involved in sectors such as mining, energy exploration and infrastructure building. But Zardari said Pakistan needs more investment.China-Pakistan trade in the first five months of this year reached 3.3 billion U.S. dollars, up 31 percent. While addressing the China-Pakistan Economic Cooperation Forum earlier Friday, Chinese Commerce Minister Chen Deming said that bilateral trade could hit 15 billion U.S. dollars in 2015.On the just-concluded China-Pakistan anti-terror drill in northwest China, Zardari said the two countries should keep united in the fight against terrorism.

BEIJING, Aug.1 (Xinhua) -- China's General Administration of Press and Publication (GAPP) has voiced its support for journalists' rights of supervision after police in an east China county wrongly issued an arrest warrant for a journalist."News organizations have the right to know, interview, cover, criticize and monitor events regarding national and public interests. Journalistic activities by news organizations and their reporters are protected by law," read a statement posted on the GAPP's website. The statement came after police of Suichang County in Zhejiang Province canceled a warrant for Qiu Ziming, a reporter of the Economic Observer News, who was accused of defamation by a publicly-listed company.Qiu had previously been wanted by the police of Suichang after Zhejiang Kan Specialty Material Co., Ltd. (Kan) accused him of defaming the company with fabricated stories. However, police of Lishui City, which administers Suichang, ordered the county's public security bureau to cancel the warrant for Qiu after a review found the warrant failed to meet statutory requirements.Police officials said earlier Friday that the investigation into allegations of defamation against Qiu and his newspaper would continue.

KABUL, July 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on Tuesday called for continued support of the international community to the war-torn Afghanistan."We want to see a peaceful, stable and independent Afghanistan that enjoys development and good neighborhood," Yang said addressing one-day international conference on Afghanistan in the Afghan capital Kabul."We should respect Afghanistan's sovereignty, and work together for the realization of Afghanistan run by the Afghans," he stressed. To achieve the goal, he proposed four points including ensuring security, political reconciliation, speeding up economic reconstruction and enhancing international cooperation."We call on international community to channel more assistance to infrastructure and other projects that will bring immediate benefit to ordinary Afghans," Yang said.He added that it is important to enhance coordination between regional and international cooperation so that they will complement and reinforce each other. The international community, he said, should remain committed to bringing durable peace and stability to Afghanistan. He also urged the international community to provide more help to Afghanistan in capacity-building and human resources development.China had contributed more than 900 million Yuan (over 123 million U.S. dollars) besides canceling 19.5 million U.S. dollars worth of debt owed by Afghanistan from 2002 to 2009.The first ever international conference hosted by post-Taliban Afghanistan with the participation of United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and some 40 foreign ministers among other delegates from over 70 countries and international organizations wrapped up with renewing support to Afghanistan.

CHENGDU, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- The massive mudslide that hit Wenchuan County, southwest China's Sichuan Province, Saturday had killed 15 people and injured nine others by Monday, local authorities said Tuesday.Wenchuan County was the epicenter of the 8.0-magnitude earthquake that jolted Sichuan and other neighboring provinces in west China in May 2008. The quake left some 87,000 people dead or missing. The county, which falls under the jurisdiction of Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture of Aba, was ravaged by rain-triggered floods and mudslides Saturday. At least 31 people were reported missing following the mudslide, but whether the 15 deaths were included was not known, according to a statement issued by the county government of Wenchuan.More than 50,000 residents and tourists were forced to evacuate in Aba as the local meteorological station issued warnings beginning Friday about expected heavy rains and possible geological disasters. Also, the county government of Wenchuan has arranged temporary shelters for residents left homeless by the floods. In Yingxiu Township of Wenchuan, rows of newly completed homes were submerged by the overflowed Minjiang River which runs through the town. The new homes had been built to accommodate those residents relocated outside Yingxiu after the deadly earthquake. If the flooding had not occurred, Lian Qunhua, who opened a grocery in the town, would have received the key for her new home in two weeks."This used to be my home," Lian told a Xinhua reporter, pointing to some debris in front of her. "That is my new home," she said, indicating a row of fresh new buildings soaked in the flood waters on the opposite bank of the Minjiang River."I feel hurt, indeed," she lamented.

BEIJING, July 19 (Xinhuanet) -- Expo 2010 Shanghai is proving to be a boon for successful Chinese entrepreneurs eager to tap into the global market. The 184-day event, which is predicted to attract an estimated 4 million foreign visitors along with global media coverage, is considered to be a golden opportunity for Chinese companies to raise their brands to an international level and explore business opportunities.According to survey released last year by the information office of Shanghai Municipal Government, more than a quarter of the respondents were hoping to visit Shanghai during the Expo to seek future business. The online survey polled 503 foreigners in 44 countries and regions across the world, 30 percent of whom were senior corporate executives.Of the Expo's 58 partners and official sponsors, 47 are Chinese companies, 25 are from Shanghai, 15 are from Beijing and seven from other parts of the country. They contributed a total of more than 7 billion yuan ( billion) in sponsorship fees to the event, averaging more than 100 million each. While the sums are large, the contributors represent only a small portion of the number Chinese firms that want a slice of the Expo pie. Those who are not qualified to partner an official sponsor have sought other means of gaining brand exposure."The Expo is a once-in-a-century opportunity for us to promote our brand on an international scale," said Zhang Yingguang, a public relations manager for Tsingdao Beer, the Chinese industry leader based in Qingdao, Shandong province. The company launched a flurry of billboard advertisements on the city's busiest streets, as well as in metro stations and commercial areas. The ads targeted foreigners by trying to teach them Chinese phrases about drinking. It also made a presence in the Zero Carbon Pavilion at the Expo, where it contributed lamps made out of beer bottles and launched a gourmet TV show with a local TV station.
