ALPINE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A semi-truck hauling frozen chicken veered off Interstate 8 and overturned, scattering boxes of the poultry product onto the ground.The crash happened at around 5 a.m. Thursday off westbound Interstate near East Victoria Drive, according to the California Highway Patrol.The cause of the crash is unclear, but witnesses and the CHP said the truck flipped onto its side and came dangerously close to a fence of a nearby home.Some witnesses said they saw the truck’s driver staggering in the lanes just after the wreck. He was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries, ABC 10News learned.A tow truck was summoned to the scene to help remove the big rig.No other injuries were reported. 729

A woman is suing Waffle House after saying she was served bleach in a drink she got from a restaurant in Georgia.Atavian Moore sued the restaurant chain Oct. 27, claiming the incident has cost her ,000 in medical bills so far, according to Atlanta's WSB-TV.Moore claims that when she was eating at a Waffle House in Lithonia, Georgia in October 2015, she was given a drink that had bleach in it. She assumes the bleach got in her drink after the restaurant cleaned its drink dispenser.WSB reported that Moore's lawsuit claimed she suffered injuries to her esophagus, stomach and other internal body parts because of the potentially deadly cocktail.According to the National Capital Poison Center, swallowing small amounts of bleach can cause mouth irritation and vomiting but when someone swallows a large amount of the chemical it can cause more serious problems.Clint Davis is a reporter for the Scripps National Desk. About 1 million people in the U.S. are confirmed to have contracted COVID-19 in the last five days, according to a database kept by Johns Hopkins University.As of Tuesday afternoon, 15 million Americans have contracted COVID-19 since the disease arrived in the country in January. The U.S. surpassed the 14 million case threshold on Thursday.According to USA Today, one out of every 22 Americans has contracted the virus.Even with the virus spreading to about 200,000 new Americans every day, top health officials expect the spread to only increase further in the coming days. Even with the current spike in cases, infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci says the country still is not yet seeing the full brunt of what is expected to be an exponential spread of the virus that was prompted by Thanksgiving travel.More people traveled by airplane during the week of Thanksgiving than at any other time during the pandemic, and officials believe the increase in travel and indoor gatherings will cause a "spike superimposed upon a spike" of virus cases.The spread also comes amid a concerning crowding of hospitals across the country. According to the COVID Tracking Project, a record 102,000 people in the U.S. are currently hospitalized with the virus, putting many hospitals and health care facilities at capacity. Some hospitals have been forced to treat patients in temporary facilities in parking garages because they have run out of beds. The frightening spike and concerning lack of space comes amid the deadliest week of the pandemic yet. The U.S. has reported an average of 2,200 COVID-19 deaths each day for the last week — a number that officials suspect will only increase as the virus continues to spread. Officials are holding Americans heed public health measures for the next few weeks, as two COVID-19 vaccines appear poised for imminent approval. A Milledgeville, Georgia boy was arrested on Friday when a gun discharged from the boy's backpack inside an elementary school, WMAZ-TV reported. The boy attends Lakeview Academy, a school for students in grades 3 through 5. The boy told investigators that he was unaware that there was a gun in his backpack, and that he had never seen the firearm before. The gun reportedly went off as he was going through his backpack in the back of the classroom. After authorities arrived at the school, he was placed under arrest. The boy is facing four charges, according to WMAZ: Carrying a weapon in a school zone; reckless conduct; disrupting or interfering with public school; and possession of a pistol by a person under 18. Baldwin County Sheriff's Maj. Scott Deason told WMAZ that the firearm was a stolen Smith & Wesson 9-millimeter. Deason told the Union Reporter that that student could not explain to investigators how he ended up with the gun.“They questioned the juvenile in the presence of his mother,” Deason told the Union Reporter. “The mother also stated she didn’t know how the gun got into her son’s book bag.”The Union Reporter added that the boy is not allowed back in school until after he goes through the court system. 1320
