SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego City Council candidate Kelvin Barrios suspended his campaign today, following allegations of ethics violations.Barrios was running for City Council District 9 in the seat soon to be vacated by Council President Georgette Gomez.``Throughout this race I have been hit, morally and mentally, more times that I can even count,'' Barrios' statement released Monday said. ``And I get it -- there were issues, we needed to address them.``It seemed like every time I did, we would collectively shift away focus from the real needs of our community. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The California State University Board of Trustees announced the appointment Wednesday of Ellen Neufeldt as president of the San Marcos campus.Neufeldt will become the university's fourth president when she takes over in July. She is currently the vice president of student engagement and enrollment services at Old Dominion University in Virginia.CSU officials had searched for and interviewed candidates for the Cal State San Marcos presidency since November."Dr. Neufeldt has been a visionary leader who has demonstrated a commitment to student success throughout her career," said CSU Trustee and search committee chair Jean Picker Firstenberg. "She brings a wealth of experience, and will serve as an inspirational leader on the campus and in the community."Current CSUSM President Karen Haynes announced last September that she plans to retire in June. Haynes, will leave office as the longest-tenured president in the university's history, helped increase the school's population from 7,000 in 2004 to the current 17,000 and added 15 new buildings and more than 100 academic programs.Neufeldt has held her current role at Old Dominion since 2011, overseeing government relations and marketing and public relations in addition to student engagement and enrollment services. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police Tuesday were searching for a man suspected of robbing a taco restaurant in the Mountain View area at gunpoint.It happened shortly before 8:50 p.m. Monday at an eatery on Ocean View Boulevard between South 36th and South 37th streets, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.The thief walked up to the counter, pointed a black handgun at the clerk and demanded money from the register, Buttle said.The clerk complied. The gunman fled out the back door and continued running northbound on South 37th Street with an undisclosed amount of cash, he said.No injuries were reported.The bandit was described as a 5-foot-4 Hispanic man in his 20s with a thin build. He was last seen wearing a blue hooded windbreaker with a white collar.Robbery detectives were investigating the incident.v 815

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police arrested a domestic violence suspect Friday morning after a standoff in La Mesa that temporarily blocked access to parts of Grossmont Center. The La Mesa and San Diego police departments responded to the situation at Grossmont Center Drive and Center Drive just before 8 a.m. Both streets were closed as officers worked to detain the suspect, La Mesa Police reported in a tweet.The situation started Thursday night when police received a call from the victim, saying she was choked by her ex-boyfriend at a residence on the 6800 block of Hyde Park Drive, San Diego police said.Police responded about 7:20 p.m. but the suspect already had fled in the girlfriend's car. Officers took a crime report and the victim was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital in Kearny Mesa as a precautionary measure.The suspect returned to the residence this morning and the victim called the police again, according to SDPD. The suspect then drove to Grossmont Center, where police found him around 7:30 a.m. The suspect was arrested at 8:19 a.m. and taken into custody.The streets in the area were reopened around 8:30 a.m., SDPD said. 1145
